NEW ORLEANS -- About $16,000 worth of belongings was reported stolen from the home of the late Marquise Hill's mother while she was at the funeral for her son, a New England Patriots lineman who drowned last week, police said Wednesday.

No suspects have been identified in Saturday's burglary at the eastern New Orleans home of Sherry Hill, who told police that she left for her son's funeral at 10:45 a.m. and discovered the break-in when she returned around 5:45 p.m.

I dunno, but with all this young man reportedly did for NOLA and its storm victims during his lifetime, its really sad to see that same crowd turn around and steal from his own mother when she's attending his funeral.

There was a rush of immigrants and citizens who helped rebuild the city. It could have been someone who was not from NO, maybe even someone from Houston.

You would have to think that would be a huge stretch to think he did not know she would not be there.

That's why I think it is stupid to have obituaries in the paper before the funeral itself. I've heard of this happening way too often.

Really?!? Sad, sad commentary!! I have never heard of that before, but it makes sense. Well, it really doesn't make sense except in the minds of criminals..
 
I have heard of it and in places where they have rent control like NY people read them to find a new apt. It has been shown in movies and a friend from NY said that yeah it does happen.

Call me backwoods, call me an ignorant Southerner, but people in New York read the obituaries to find a new apartment? Something is twisted about that... September 11, 2001 we ALL were New Yorkers, beyond that, I dont get it up there..

There are many places where people have to wait for positions to open by people retiring. At my current job this is the case.

In a city where the population rises but the amount of space to live in stays the same. Something has to give. This is going to be indicant of things we can expect in the near future in larger cities worldwide.

I mean I get it logistically speaking - but it still seems a bit twisted. I guess being from H-town where we spread out and not necessarily up, its just something that I have never really had to consider.
 
This isn't a new practice or unique to New Orleans. I was told many many, like Houston Post, years ago that addresses weren't printed in the obituary column because thieves read them, and burglarized homes while families were attending the funeral. The problem is thieves, not a particular city.
 
I have a feeling someone will turn this dude or dudette in to the police when the word gets out in the neighborhoods. Someone will know or hear about the theft and who did it.

I heard that everyone in her hood knew when she was leaving, they all knew she lived there, The robbery happened in broad daylight, and you dont steal $16,000 worth of stuff and have nobody notice.

So it becomes obvious that nobody is gonna say a damn thing, if they didnt say anything while they were robbing her, they sure as hell aint gonna say anything now. Even though it's sad, nobody is gonna risk the repurcussions and do the right thing.

That is sickening, such a sad state of affairs in NOLA. That town is dying a slow death.

Maybe a certain NFL running back (cough Bush) will put up a reward matching the value stolen for "info leading to a conviction." I think it should then be matched by the NFL as a class act to help the family of one of their own.

There are idiots in every town, not just New Orleans.

I was recently in NO and it was a lot of fun. If it weren't for the t-shirts in the shops slagging FEMA ( example: "FEMA EVACUATION PLAN: Run *** run!") you would have no idea anything happened if you stay in tourist areas.

Seriously, if you relied on just what you read in the newspapers about NO, you would think it would be unvisitable. In the quarter, things felt very safe.
