Right now we are a big IF team.
If Shaub is the real deal.
If Green can be a force.
If we find a 2nd WR.
If the o-line steps up a notch.
If Amobi, Williams, and DeMeco form the unit we expect.
If Brown can make a few more FGs.
If Stanley can return to form.
If Mathis, Jones or someone else can be a return monster.
If we don't get hit by the injury bug.
I am enthused about our upcoming season and I think some of those ifs can go our way. I don't think all of them have to go our way for us to see a 2 0r 3 game improvement. Still pie-in-the-sky dreams will have to wait till the games start.

What is with this new cross-breed of fan that whines and degrades the team because things haven't exactly gone their way ?
Texan fans will be just fine as soon as we start looking/playing like a pro team.
I don't know what Overalls was thinking, either. As for me, I'm just trying to be more exuberant and less critical.

We look like a 'pro team' when we beat Indy last Christmas Eve, and that was the last time the Colts lost before winning the Super Bowl. That's good enough to give me optimism, not even including our upgrades and continued march towards building a team that truly reflects a Kubiak FO.
Kinda like that one good drive/putt/hole that brings you back to the golf course...:
You know that your game stinks, (speaking for myself), but maybe a turnaround is on the way. Been hoping for over 45 years now.
I guess a game like that is what keeps fans coming back.

Hope it doesn't take the Texans that long.
Good god, I sincerely hope the Texans have a higher chance of winning seasons than I do of hitting that little white ball. (I've had the 'pleasure' of going to a driving range a few times with my golf-playin' buddy, and that's got to be some of my most frustrating experiences in recent memory!)
I'm not sure I see much whining and degrading in this thread.
I'm not saying this to you, but as an observation in general. Everybody usually sees themselves as a realist, and that everybody else is either with them or is a whiner, optimist, pessimist or whatever. People tend to have an egocentric view of who is a realist.
Well said. It's like driving. Everyone who drives faster than you is a raving lunatic who is going to cause death and destruction driving that fast, and everyone driving slower than you is an old geezer grandma who won't get out of the way and should be run off the road.
I guess a game like that is what keeps fans coming back.

Not real sure....It seems to have started with the tu orangebloods the last couple of years.
That's rich, coming from an Irish fan, CC... nobody has a more exaggerated sense of entitlement than the Golden Domers, and with very little recent reason for it, to boot...
I guess any topic is a good reason to bash the Horns... I think it's great, though. We're as hated now as ND used to be... when they were good.
It's our story ... we can tell it how we want to . I'll say we hit on the ifs and go 9-7 ... because it's June.
There ya go. It's June . . the month where you throw common sense out the window, and let mindless optimism rule the day. It's the only month of the year where you can have the most fun, because starting in July, it all starts to go back downhill.

I hope the turnaround in my game is near. If not, the cost of these little white balls is going to get me confined to the doghouse by the wife.
Just how do ND fans act like they are entitled? Who have you been listening to to come to such a load of crap conclusion? I know for a fact it has not been Mark may who hates ND more than anyone in the histroy of commentating. Or maybe it was 2005 when 95% of all projection had ND going 0-6 or 1-5, yet they did not.
Maybe it is because they are NBC for every home game, so what, I am sorry ut does not have that kind of national following. Maybe it is the 90% + graduation rate of student atheletes. To bad ut has nothing even close to that.
I guess you do not read the stuff from ut folks on here wanting every guy who ever played at ut, even if he is a pot headed loser. Heck they were upset sloan thomas was released even though he was never picked up by another team.
Exactly what entitlement are you referring to, because they get picked for bowl games based soly on how they travel and how the ratings will be? Like usc or um does not get the same following. Maybe it is schools unlike ND who let players smoke pot get caught and then suspend them against a div I AA school yet not against a div I A oppent. Oh and just to stick it to you a little more, ND has never played a Div I AA team. Of course you are going to mention the service academies, but before you do learn the history behind it and they are Div I A teams.
Thanks for not mentioning any facts, it is always fun when that happens.
Try learning what true ND Nation says before speaking ....... http://www.irishenvy.com/
Now how in the heck did you expect me to know that. It is not like I actually keep up with ut or anything.
What is 2 wins and 8 losses?
Hint... look up tu's record against the Fighting Irish.
tu's winning percentage against the Irish compares favorably with tu's "student athletes?" graduation rate...
What is with this new cross-breed of fan that whines and degrades the team because things haven't exactly gone their way ?
You mean the ones who are looking for the first four game winning streak ? If people are looking at the holes in the dike...history has shown for this team, the holes tend to get magnified once we get the pades on. Potential dosen't feed the bull dog. And we all know what the boards will look like in October if the holes turn into land mines and they don't meet the expectations of June. Anyone projecting the thirty something legs to hold over a sixteen game schedule is not being realistic. A little water on the passion, from my tree is in the long run a good thingy. Things don't go right they could just as easily be 4-12 as 9-7.
Anyone projecting the thirty something legs to hold over a sixteen game schedule is not being realistic.
If things don't go right, I could just as easily get in a car crash and die rather than make it home safely.
I guess some choose to plan and expect failure though. Not quite my thing.
No Xt some look at history and realize that driving your car while you are drunk or after twelve midnight, maginfies the possiblty of not making it home safely. Ignoring the disasters and pit falls, that are or should be obvious when you drive, makes gettin home that much more dangerous. Setting yourself up for heart break is not a good thing. I hope they go twelve and four. My experence says, what I've seen from history the last forty years says, they're going to have to get very lucky with injuries and a lot of people are going to have to play lights out to go 12-4. Possible, not likely. And if people are standing up a saying in thier opnion the emperor neesd some more clothes on...well that's just being prudent, not disloyal.
Really that is unrealistic? What, it breaks some rule based in fact rather than just some fan shorthand rule? Try looking at Emmitt Smith, Curtis Marin, Fred Taylor, Tiki Barber, Warrick Dunn and look at the contracts given in expectation to guys on the verge of 30 like Edge, Shawn Alexander, Travis Henry, Thomas Jones.
I don't know about short hand rule, how about...Walker, Bosselli, Flannagan, Moulds, Weigert, Payne....ect. , ect. Thirty is the wall number.
Driving drunk ? That is called setting yourself up for failure...
What have the Texans done this off-season that is the equivalent of driving drunk (aka setting themselves up for failure) ?
What pitt falls have the Texans ignored that coud have been fixed ?
You jump from one thing to another like a cricket on a bail of hay. The Texans haven't done anything but attempt to improve the team.
You talk about the past and history influencing your thought yet you have a quote in your sig from Nero basically making you a walking talking oxymoron.
Or, how else could we have improved the RB position.
THenry has as many miles and a larger injury history- plus, he was more expensive in regards to guaranteed money.
I expect Kubiak and Smith to already know this. I do not ecpect you to know this. I expect you to be overly optomisitic and set yourself for heart ache.
They passed on upgrading the FS spot. In three consecutive rounds. They drafted SS #3 instead. There that's one. Agreed they did the best they could under the cap/Carr issues. But the best they could do doesn't atomatically put them in paly off range. And pointing that out does not make us disloyal. They have to learn to win.
Oxymoron, like continually buying thrity something free agents only to see them fail ? I mean even you should see by now the stop gaps do not work. When have they ever ? Why will this years stop gaps be any different from the last five years worth of stop gap players ? Tallent matters. If this group over comes the lack of tallent, that will be something. If they get out of the gate 3-1 that will be something. To bang on someone because history has shown that it doesn't work....that's tunnel visioned. I'll go to Guyana with you, but I'm not drinking the kool aide Jim. They could get off to a good start.
I'm not expecting sixteen games out of Ahman or the three grey beards.
Good Lord, the tone of your post speaks volumes about what I was joking about...
I took one shot at CC for dragging (in a negative way) UT into a topic that had absolutely nothing to do with UT, and even put in as many smilies as the system would allow, just to make sure it was clear that I was joking...
My bad for using regular smilies instead of the winking smilies...
It's been a while since you made your rant. I'm glad you got that off your chest, and hope you feel better... I just hope you were able to get your tighty whities out of a bunch some time thereafter. (no smilies)
**edit** It made me laugh out loud the read the following quote from you (in another thread) just minutes after I responded to your rant. Sweet irony...
That's rich, coming from an Irish fan, CC... nobody has a more exaggerated sense of entitlement than the Golden Domers, and with very little recent reason for it, to boot...
Spec,
The Longhorns have had a tough go of it the last few years in regards to player conduct. Any honest UT fan would tell you that. However, Mack has always handled the situations extremely well and taken appropriate action and punished the player severely. Isn't that what you are supposed to do? Anywho the majority of football players are good people and go to class. I can personally attest to this. Back in the day, Butch Hadnot was supposed to be the next Earl Campbell, but the dude never showed up to any of his classes and when he did he would sleep. He never played for Texas again shortly thereafter.
Texas' athletic program is beyond reproach when you look at the program as a whole. Great programs and not just in the big $$ sports. Opportunities for men AND women for scholarships and top-flight competition across the board. All this done while being in a real city not just a college town. You should read about some of the stuff Mack has done for players that have been given scholarship and then had career ending injuries before even playing a down. Mack still gives them the scholarship and makes a difference in a young man's life. This costs the team a scholarship and puts them at a disadvantage. Mack recruits the best of the best and sometimes the guys get in trouble, just like any other major football power.
We all get that Notre Dame runs their program on a slightly higher plane, and that is respectable and admirable. I just don't see how UT is any worse than any other college this side of the usual suspects that run ultra clean programs (ND and Stanford come to mind). To single them out seems to be just hating. If you want to hate on UT hate on the fact that they lost to A&M at home with a BCS appearance on the line.
I guess I just like Mack and I like the fact that he has done it the right way, our grades and graduation numbers are just as good as any other Big12 school....maybe not as good as ND but what can you do?
What is "too optimistic" ? First you'd have to know what I expect out of this team to determine if I'm "too optimistic".
Should I not expect improvement from the team ? Should we have created a FS from dust and then drafted him at 10 ? Should we not pick up free agents who we feel will help the team out ?
If the goal of the off-season is to improve, and we were 6-10 last year, is it being 'too optimistic' to expect atleast 8-8 ?
My opinions about the optimism heading into this season hasn't changed. If you were a David Carr fan, you're still a little upset that he was shown the door. So now the 'cool' thing to do is down talk Matt Schaub before he takes a snap, and remind the rest of the fan base that there is the 'possibility' that we could have another bad season.
Being a fan is about optimism, getting upset, and appreciating the wins. When you are enthusiastic about situations and that situation turns out to be positive you tend to enjoy it more. If you choose to head into the season with the attitude you dawn; fine, so be it. But I'll be damned if you tell me I'm 'too optimistic'.
Exactly. Expecting a mid range leap by the o-line to a top fifteen o-line, mediocre, is not being to optimistic. Expecting a jump in production by the defensive back seven is not a reach. They were so low last year, anywhere up is a positive. However banging people because they recongnise this is far from a finished product is a little absurd. MS on paper should be a better QB than DC out of hand. But if someone points to the fact, fact mind you, that he has limited experence and is far from a done deal, and then getting banged for it for not sipping the cool aide, that also is a bit extreme. So I'll be damned if your going to tell other folks who point out the holes in our little dike are wrong or somehow disloyal because they do not buy into the Xt extreme.
I don't think 8-8 is too optimistic. However under the the same circumstance as last year, expecting the o-line and d-lines to remain in tack with out any injuries, something they haven't done in three season by the way, is a bit of a reach. So is expecting a back like Ahman with the tread he has on him to make the sixteen game schedule unscathed. Further, if the correct injuries happen MS is going to have to prove he is durable. Something as a fact becuase of his limited starts, he has yet to prove. I don't think there is any disloyalty from folks when they point the obvious out. Wanna whip up expectations, be my guest. I except the fact that DC is gone. What infurates me is people stepping up out of hand and posting this team is going to climb onto his back under our current circumstaces and we're going to win the division out of hand some how. Tallent matters. They are better, but they are not one of the four best teams in the AFC.

This was not ment as a joke, at least I did not take it as one, because I have heard this all my life from anyone who is not a ND fan. This just seemed to be a slap in the face to cuppacoffee, and I defended a fellow Irish fan. Who was not being rude in my opinion and you wanted to mock him.
