Is Erik Kramer nuts???

If you look at the landscape of the AFC, his takes make sense.

the bengals, colts, chiefs, fins, titans, bills, raiders, & steelers all enter the season with less talent & in some cases HUGE questionmarks at QB and/or HC.

the jets, chargers, and jville pretty much stayed the course.

the texans, broncos, ravens, patriots, and browns all made significant upgrades to their team overall. of all of them the most surprising could end up being the texans. the upgrade at QB and RB and our huge amount of talent on defense makes us a possible force in 2007.

I am cautiously optimistic about this year. We got people to believe in now.

Right now we are a big IF team.

If Shaub is the real deal.
If Green can be a force.
If we find a 2nd WR.
If the o-line steps up a notch.
If Amobi, Williams, and DeMeco form the unit we expect.
If Brown can make a few more FGs.
If Stanley can return to form.
If Mathis, Jones or someone else can be a return monster.
If we don't get hit by the injury bug.

I am enthused about our upcoming season and I think some of those ifs can go our way. I don't think all of them have to go our way for us to see a 2 0r 3 game improvement. Still pie-in-the-sky dreams will have to wait till the games start.

Fair assessment.

For thems who were a part of the Luv Ya Blue days. wouldn't it be sweet for the Texans to be really good? You know, play an entertaining brand of football and get Ws. The area WANTS it so bad. We live football. I just don't want Ws, I want the sort of team that crushes other teams. I want the experience of the 4th Q of the first Jacksonville game last year.

It will happen. Next year, would be a nice time for that.

It's our story ... we can tell it how we want to . I'll say we hit on the ifs and go 9-7 ... because it's June .

Just cause somebody can see the promised land, he's crazy...

The Texans will prove Kramer right. Some insight:

Shaub is the real deal.
Green will be a force.
Jones will rock all over the field.
The o-line doesn't need to step up a notch. The sacks were mostly Carr's fault, so placing MS behind center should kill at least 20/23 of those sacks. (I'd say more, but it's Matt's first year in a Texan's uni.)
Amobi, Mario, and Demeco are an awesome and unpredictable force. Just look at their first names. Nobody can stop guys with names like these...
Brown is getting better. Generally, PKs get better as they get older, so he should be about to top form. Stanley won't be necessary. (See the A, M, D arguement above.)
Jones has speed and maneuverability. He could be an OROY contender as a return-man.
The injury-bug seems to hit the Texans every-other year. So it should not be a problem this year.

What is with this new cross-breed of fan that whines and degrades the team because things haven't exactly gone their way ?

Not real sure....It seems to have started with the tu orangebloods the last couple of years. :crying:

The Texans passed one year on their tu LB of choice, then last year passed on their tu QB of choice. ...Can't please everybody.

Texan fans will be just fine as soon as we start looking/playing like a pro team.

Of course why we haven't, up to this point, has been a source of much friendly (?) banter between posters...:D

Texan fans will be just fine as soon as we start looking/playing like a pro team.

We look like a 'pro team' when we beat Indy last Christmas Eve, and that was the last time the Colts lost before winning the Super Bowl. That's good enough to give me optimism, not even including our upgrades and continued march towards building a team that truly reflects a Kubiak FO.

I don't know what Overalls was thinking, either. As for me, I'm just trying to be more exuberant and less critical.

I am just trying to be realistic. My post said I feel we can go 8-8 or 9-7 and that we could accomplish more depending on how things shake out. I am just not ready to buy my post season tickets before training camp starts. IMO everything I listed as an IF is still a grey area of concern. I think that Kubes will make fewer mistakes as a 2nd year head coach. I also think Schaub is the real deal. That Green will break 1200 yards. That AJ will catch fewer passes, but for more yards. I like Jacoby Jones and feel he could be a real sleeper. I have faith that Kris will have a bounce back year. I also expect that Mario will at least come close to double digit sacks and that with DeMeco and Amobi teams will have a hard time running on us, but UNTIL we play a game, we haven't done anything but field a better team, on paper. I don't feel I am being pesimistic in predicting our first non-losing season, but I realize that we, as a team, have not had a four leaf clover in out pocket either.

What is with this new cross-breed of fan that whines and degrades the team because things haven't exactly gone their way ?

I'm not sure I see much whining and degrading in this thread.

I'm not saying this to you, but as an observation in general. Everybody usually sees themselves as a realist, and that everybody else is either with them or is a whiner, optimist, pessimist or whatever. People tend to have an egocentric view of who is a realist.

I guess a game like that is what keeps fans coming back.

Kinda like that one good drive/putt/hole that brings you back to the golf course...:

You know that your game stinks, (speaking for myself), but maybe a turnaround is on the way. Been hoping for over 45 years now. :D

Hope it doesn't take the Texans that long.

Good god, I sincerely hope the Texans have a higher chance of winning seasons than I do of hitting that little white ball. (I've had the 'pleasure' of going to a driving range a few times with my golf-playin' buddy, and that's got to be some of my most frustrating experiences in recent memory!) :gun:

It gets worse when you are on the golf course. Yet I still come back.

Sports is frustrating in of itself but it is also very rewarding.

Well said. It's like driving. Everyone who drives faster than you is a raving lunatic who is going to cause death and destruction driving that fast, and everyone driving slower than you is an old geezer grandma who won't get out of the way and should be run off the road. :devilpig:

That's rich, coming from an Irish fan, CC... nobody has a more exaggerated sense of entitlement than the Golden Domers, and with very little recent reason for it, to boot...

I guess any topic is a good reason to bash the Horns... I think it's great, though. We're as hated now as ND used to be... when they were good. :) :) :) :) :)

Not crazy, just smart.

I just think of our division. I say we can be better than the Jags, because...well we have always beat them. We can be better than the Titans Madden curse and IMO they have loss more than gained. The Colts though...eh. Their defense may have got a bit worse...but they still have Peyton Manning.

Call me crazy, but I think we go 500 this year and maybe get that exra win to go above that... :texflag:

Just how do ND fans act like they are entitled? Who have you been listening to to come to such a load of crap conclusion? I know for a fact it has not been Mark may who hates ND more than anyone in the histroy of commentating. Or maybe it was 2005 when 95% of all projection had ND going 0-6 or 1-5, yet they did not.

Maybe it is because they are NBC for every home game, so what, I am sorry ut does not have that kind of national following. Maybe it is the 90% + graduation rate of student atheletes. To bad ut has nothing even close to that.

I guess you do not read the stuff from ut folks on here wanting every guy who ever played at ut, even if he is a pot headed loser. Heck they were upset sloan thomas was released even though he was never picked up by another team.

Exactly what entitlement are you referring to, because they get picked for bowl games based soly on how they travel and how the ratings will be? Like usc or um does not get the same following. Maybe it is schools unlike ND who let players smoke pot get caught and then suspend them against a div I AA school yet not against a div I A oppent. Oh and just to stick it to you a little more, ND has never played a Div I AA team. Of course you are going to mention the service academies, but before you do learn the history behind it and they are Div I A teams.

Thanks for not mentioning any facts, it is always fun when that happens.

There ya go. It's June . . the month where you throw common sense out the window, and let mindless optimism rule the day. It's the only month of the year where you can have the most fun, because starting in July, it all starts to go back downhill.:winky:

What is 2 wins and 8 losses?

Hint... look up tu's record against the Fighting Irish.

tu's winning percentage against the Irish compares favorably with tu's "student athletes?" graduation rate... :D

Now that's an appropriate and spirited response. Touché, sir.

What is with this new cross-breed of fan that whines and degrades the team because things haven't exactly gone their way ?

You mean the ones who are looking for the first four game winning streak ? If people are looking at the holes in the dike...history has shown for this team, the holes tend to get magnified once we get the pades on. Potential dosen't feed the bull dog. And we all know what the boards will look like in October if the holes turn into land mines and they don't meet the expectations of June. Anyone projecting the thirty something legs to hold over a sixteen game schedule is not being realistic. A little water on the passion, from my tree is in the long run a good thingy. Things don't go right they could just as easily be 4-12 as 9-7.

If things don't go right, I could just as easily get in a car crash and die rather than make it home safely.

I guess some choose to plan and expect failure though. Not quite my thing.

Really that is unrealistic? What, it breaks some rule based in fact rather than just some fan shorthand rule? Try looking at Emmitt Smith, Curtis Marin, Fred Taylor, Tiki Barber, Warrick Dunn and look at the contracts given in expectation to guys on the verge of 30 like Edge, Shawn Alexander, Travis Henry, Thomas Jones.

No Xt some look at history and realize that driving your car while you are drunk or after twelve midnight, maginfies the possiblty of not making it home safely. Ignoring the disasters and pit falls, that are or should be obvious when you drive, makes gettin home that much more dangerous. Setting yourself up for heart break is not a good thing. I hope they go twelve and four. My experence says, what I've seen from history the last forty years says, they're going to have to get very lucky with injuries and a lot of people are going to have to play lights out to go 12-4. Possible, not likely. And if people are standing up a saying in thier opnion the emperor neesd some more clothes on...well that's just being prudent, not disloyal.

Driving drunk ? That is called setting yourself up for failure...

What have the Texans done this off-season that is the equivalent of driving drunk (aka setting themselves up for failure) ?

What pitt falls have the Texans ignored that coud have been fixed ?

You jump from one thing to another like a cricket on a bail of hay. The Texans haven't done anything but attempt to improve the team.

You talk about the past and history influencing your thought yet you have a quote in your sig from Nero basically making you a walking talking oxymoron.

I don't know about short hand rule, how about...Walker, Bosselli, Flannagan, Moulds, Weigert, Payne....ect. , ect. Thirty is the wall number. For evey guy who defies father time there are one hundred others others who don't. Ahman Green and the guys on our o-line might do it this year. Go sixteen games with out any missing time. Curtis Martin says he'll come back this season. Fred Taylor had his best none injury season last year. But the fact is, ahman hasn't completed a complete season since when ? Once their numbers apex, once they hit thirty...the production drops and the injuries go up. Expecting Flannagan, Salaam and McKinney to all make it is prety unrealistic. The odds are two of the three will be injured sometime durring the season. When that occurs and who is available when it occours will directly effect their season this year.

I don't know about short hand rule, how about...Walker, Bosselli, Flannagan, Moulds, Weigert, Payne....ect. , ect. Thirty is the wall number.

So now you are extending the RB "rule" out to every position? And it appears you are saying everyone starts getting injured at 30 because that is what stopped Walker (34), Bosselli, Weigert, Payne and Flannagan (34) last year. Strange frankly to use those examples since linemen commonly play well past thirty. I'll stick with my unrealistic expectation Green will be solid this year based on my RB examples rather than a bunch of non-RB injury examples.

If you want to be critical of the AGreen signing, then tell me what other signing it prevented. Or, how else could we have improved the RB position. If we draft Lynch in round one, then we don't get Okoye. Is that what you propose we should've done? What FA running back would you've gotten? THenry has as many miles and a larger injury history- plus, he was more expensive in regards to guaranteed money.

As far as next season goes, we're very healthy cap-wise, so the signing won't prevent us from doing whatever business needs to be done next season.

After next season, we can cut Green for a very small cap hit- I think it's about 2.75 million after the 2nd year of the contract.

I expect Kubiak and Smith to already know this. I do not ecpect you to know this. I expect you to be overly optomisitic and set yourself for heart ache.

They passed on upgrading the FS spot. In three consecutive rounds. They drafted SS #3 instead. There that's one. Agreed they did the best they could under the cap/Carr issues. But the best they could do doesn't atomatically put them in paly off range. And pointing that out does not make us disloyal. They have to learn to win.

Oxymoron, like continually buying thrity something free agents only to see them fail ? I mean even you should see by now the stop gaps do not work. When have they ever ? Why will this years stop gaps be any different from the last five years worth of stop gap players ? Tallent matters. If this group over comes the lack of tallent, that will be something. If they get out of the gate 3-1 that will be something. To bang on someone because history has shown that it doesn't work....that's tunnel visioned. I'll go to Guyana with you, but I'm not drinking the kool aide Jim. They could get off to a good start.
I'm not expecting sixteen games out of Ahman or the three grey beards.

What is "too optimistic" ? First you'd have to know what I expect out of this team to determine if I'm "too optimistic".

Should I not expect improvement from the team ? Should we have created a FS from dust and then drafted him at 10 ? Should we not pick up free agents who we feel will help the team out ?

If the goal of the off-season is to improve, and we were 6-10 last year, is it being 'too optimistic' to expect atleast 8-8 ?

My opinions about the optimism heading into this season hasn't changed. If you were a David Carr fan, you're still a little upset that he was shown the door. So now the 'cool' thing to do is down talk Matt Schaub before he takes a snap, and remind the rest of the fan base that there is the 'possibility' that we could have another bad season.

Being a fan is about optimism, getting upset, and appreciating the wins. When you are enthusiastic about situations and that situation turns out to be positive you tend to enjoy it more. If you choose to head into the season with the attitude you dawn; fine, so be it. But I'll be damned if you tell me I'm 'too optimistic'.

No I do not keep up with ut but I do read the reports of grad rates, and I find it sickening that any college graduates anything under 75%. Why would I keep up with ut since they do not play ND, if they did I would at least the season they play. You put the smilieys on one of your sentences and I understand that as a joke, but it was the other sentence

That's rich, coming from an Irish fan, CC... nobody has a more exaggerated sense of entitlement than the Golden Domers, and with very little recent reason for it, to boot...

that I did not like and found insulting.

This was not ment as a joke, at least I did not take it as one, because I have heard this all my life from anyone who is not a ND fan. This just seemed to be a slap in the face to cuppacoffee, and I defended a fellow Irish fan. Who was not being rude in my opinion and you wanted to mock him.

Spec,

The Longhorns have had a tough go of it the last few years in regards to player conduct. Any honest UT fan would tell you that. However, Mack has always handled the situations extremely well and taken appropriate action and punished the player severely. Isn't that what you are supposed to do? Anywho the majority of football players are good people and go to class. I can personally attest to this. Back in the day, Butch Hadnot was supposed to be the next Earl Campbell, but the dude never showed up to any of his classes and when he did he would sleep. He never played for Texas again shortly thereafter.

Texas' athletic program is beyond reproach when you look at the program as a whole. Great programs and not just in the big $$ sports. Opportunities for men AND women for scholarships and top-flight competition across the board. All this done while being in a real city not just a college town. You should read about some of the stuff Mack has done for players that have been given scholarship and then had career ending injuries before even playing a down. Mack still gives them the scholarship and makes a difference in a young man's life. This costs the team a scholarship and puts them at a disadvantage. Mack recruits the best of the best and sometimes the guys get in trouble, just like any other major football power.

We all get that Notre Dame runs their program on a slightly higher plane, and that is respectable and admirable. I just don't see how UT is any worse than any other college this side of the usual suspects that run ultra clean programs (ND and Stanford come to mind). To single them out seems to be just hating. If you want to hate on UT hate on the fact that they lost to A&M at home with a BCS appearance on the line.

I guess I just like Mack and I like the fact that he has done it the right way, our grades and graduation numbers are just as good as any other Big12 school....maybe not as good as ND but what can you do?

I don't know about that 2nd HM. i don't recall exactly what he did to Cedric Benson after he pulled that kick door but i don't recall it being "severe" by any means. I think the only reason he suspended Tarrell Brown 1 game this past year was b/c he was under pressure to do something after everyone was giving Stoops props for the way he handled the Bomar situation.

And Austin is as much a college town as knoxville tennessee b/c there is nothing else there sports wise but the university. I thought that was the definition of a college town?

Still overall, as much as i hate (& i mean really hate) to say it, it's a fine University all the way around.

I think we make 2011 our target to not only make the SB, but win the thing. 2008-10 will be dips into the playoffs to get our feet wet.

I can think of nothing sweeter than to win our first SB in the home of the cowgirls.

I am not totally knocking ut, even though I do not like the school This goes back to the days of the SWC.

It was the fact that someone said ND has this entitled attitude so I stuck up for the school and one inparticular fan. Me calling out ut was because it was the school I thought he was gung-ho for.

I think the school does some things well and some things not so well. They are no different than most big time colleges and look the other way with student transgretions if they can.

My comment on the graduation rate is a fact, and it is that way for most big time schools, but that would say the school does not care about its student athletes and only about winning. Which should not be the case.

Anyway back on topic

Exactly. Expecting a mid range leap by the o-line to a top fifteen o-line, mediocre, is not being to optimistic. Expecting a jump in production by the defensive back seven is not a reach. They were so low last year, anywhere up is a positive. However banging people because they recongnise this is far from a finished product is a little absurd. MS on paper should be a better QB than DC out of hand. But if someone points to the fact, fact mind you, that he has limited experence and is far from a done deal, and then getting banged for it for not sipping the cool aide, that also is a bit extreme. So I'll be damned if your going to tell other folks who point out the holes in our little dike are wrong or somehow disloyal because they do not buy into the Xt extreme.
I don't think 8-8 is too optimistic. However under the the same circumstance as last year, expecting the o-line and d-lines to remain in tack with out any injuries, something they haven't done in three season by the way, is a bit of a reach. So is expecting a back like Ahman with the tread he has on him to make the sixteen game schedule unscathed. Further, if the correct injuries happen MS is going to have to prove he is durable. Something as a fact becuase of his limited starts, he has yet to prove. I don't think there is any disloyalty from folks when they point the obvious out. Wanna whip up expectations, be my guest. I except the fact that DC is gone. What infurates me is people stepping up out of hand and posting this team is going to climb onto his back under our current circumstaces and we're going to win the division out of hand some how. Tallent matters. They are better, but they are not one of the four best teams in the AFC.

Sounds to me like your fighting what you call extremes with your own extremes (bolded areas). I didn't even bold them all because I am on vacation. Your arguing for nothing over here. I hope you don't do this at your job.

LOL...Whatever peete...I cleary said that I don't care about you nor anyone else being pessimistic about this upcoming season...You are grown, so do what you'd like...

The only point I was making is that it's no coincidence that the same folks who were in DC's coner, such as yourself, are the same folks who come into threads which start out posiive and feed a negative vibe into them. No NOT ALL people who were fans of Carr, but a select few. Nothing wrong with thinking that we are a bad team. Nothing wrong with thinking that people are 'too optimistic'. Heck there is nothing wrong with thinking that overall we're still weak and pointing out the weak spots. But that's not going to keep me from calling it how I see it. LOL...I could care less about changing opinions, so your theory about the "Xt extreme" is completely wacky...I've even stated at the end of my post to 'go ahead and keep being negative'...I'm not joking when I say that....

But just as much as you can look at the team in a negative light, I can look at them in a positive light. I see good things happening and I choose to acknowledge those things. You choose to look at the past to determine the future, even though our past was under a totally different F.O, headcoach, and mostly different players...You even go on to name all the bad things that can happen, and then say all those bad things probaly will....But keep doing ya thing, the negativity looks good on ya....

II'll go to Guyana with you, but I'm not drinking the kool aide Jim.

I tend to be an optimistic fan, hoping for 9-7. Realistic expectations? Who knows.

But I did find the above line to be pretty humorous. :heh:

There is certainly nothing wrong with taking a hard look at our team's strengths and weaknesses and formulating an opinion accordingly. Some of us will inject a bit of optimistic homerism into the take and hope that the breaks fall our way this year, and others will take a more negative 'prove it to me first' attitude. It is certainly our prerogative as fans to feel either way.

How hypocritical.
cuppacoffee takes a shot at UT and their fans and that's OK because, you know, he's "Irish". But when I jab back (mainly because UT was never mentioned a single time until he made his remark), I'm a jackass who deserves to be vented on by someone who has an obvious lifelong sore spot about his team (you). But of course, it's OK for you to rant on and bring unrelated things to the table to justify your emotional outburst...

I get it... you are allowed to defend a "fellow Irish fan"...
I'm not allowed to defend "tu orangebloods" (cc's words, lower case and all, obviously for effect)

That seems to sum up the way you view the situation.
Damned if that doesn't sound like a sense of entitlement to me...
