Texans showing serious interest in DT Sam Adams

it looks like the Texans are possible front runners in looking to pickup DT Sam Adams who got released by the Bengals. I have always liked this guy even when he was an Aggie. He is old and due to other team's interest, he won't be cheap...but I think we could really help ourselves. If memory serves me, he played in the 3-4 a lot early in his career but to have a 4 deep DT squad of Okoye, Adams, TJ, Maddox would be really nice. He could really help stop the run in the middle and allow Okoye to focus on penetration.

I completely endorse getting Sam Adams as long as we don't overpay. What do we have to lose?

good post, just kinda feel that yeah we're trying to get some veterns in there to help our rookies and I don't think he'd be satisfied as a back up

we have another problem, only so many roster spots, carrying 4 DT is a bit much, it would take away from something else we are not so deep at. IMHO

Edit : actuallly that would be 5 DT's definately overkill

right, but how many will make it out of training camp and the preseason?

i wouldn't mind this signing too much even though he's in his 14th season... seems like our defense is going to be fun to watch this season.

you're assuming we're keeping TJ..:pirate:

a 4 dt rotation is ok.. especially when you have guys who can be involved in GL defences- plus we dont know how much zgonina has left in him (like adams) so bringing him in to battle for 1 of those 4 spots wouldn't hurt imo

On one hand I'm all for picking up Adams and shopping or cutting TJ. I would rather have a vet that knows what he's doing than and guy that doesn't care about being an NFL player.

On the other, do you want to sign a 14 year veteran? Isn't that a bit too old?

I wouldn't mind picking up a 70 year old man at DT so long as he could stop the run.....

Adams would be the space eater at DT that we have missed just as much as a left tackle. Who cares if he's old? As long as he is fat and can still occupy blockers, he will be fine. Amobi is the playmaking DT. Could be like the Williams combo for the Vikings

I'd love the signing. I don't think I could think select a better mentor for Okoye at this point in the FA period and that's where the 14 years come in play. Okoye is too young and Adams is too old. I'd call that some serious counterbalancing by the Houston Texans and it's a move I'd love.

Will it happen? I seriously doubt it. We don't have the money. Just because we're agressively pursuing this fellow doesn't mean it's a given. Also, I'd really hope the Texans would wait a mite bit longer and see who becomes available this Friday (June 1st cuts) before committing a chunk of the cap towards Adams. I'm still hoping for a prime free safety to be released come Friday.

I say if he can play and it doesn't cost too much sign him.
Random question can Eric Wilbur kick fgs? If so, we can cut both Stanley and Brown, save a roster spot and carry an extra positon player.

While it would be cool to have him for a year just for the mentoring and leadership skills alone, I'd bet that he comes at too high of a price.

I read this article again and I don't see where it states that we're the front runners? All I got out of it was that he's tentatively scheduled to meet with the Houston Texans. Maybe you have another source that pinpoints where you're getting your information from? I'd love to read up on that.

I also read a little futher and noticed that Adams is primarily a two gap defender and Okoye is a three gap defender. I mentioned in a post earlier today that I'd love this signing and would only see it as to be extremely beneficial to Okoye. I just may have been incorrect on thinking that. With that in mind, would any of you 'gurus' elaborate on this? Would a two gap defender be a good mentor for a rising young three gap defender?

I'm not an expert on this, but I think what you mean is Okoye plays the 3 technique, and is a one gap player. Basically, as I understand it, the "technique" signifies the where, and gap signifies the responsibility. Adams would be covering 2 gaps, ie a Gary Walker space eating type. He would probably be a 1 technique?? But not at all sure on that one. I believe the techniques start at zero over the center, and work out from there. Okoye is going to be a one gap penetrator vs the 2 gap space eater.

Anyway, regardless, this would be a great signing if he still has something in the tank. He would be a perfect fit inside on running downs, and will free up our playmakers at DL and LB to make plays. He would really improve our run defense. On passing downs, I assume he would come out and either TJ, Maddox, or whomever, would come in. I hope it works out. :d:

Yes sir, that's exactly what I mean. I understand how the techniques work thanks to a previous thread on this board which just explained it perfectly well. I just had the terminology wrong. My apologies on that. I'll try to research my posts to show a little better grasp on linguistics. Bear with me for the time being.

So basically, what you're saying is that because of the differences in where they would be lining up against the offensive line, this translates into Adams not being the most perfect mentor for Okoye since he plays the three technique.

If that's true then this doesn't necessarily discourage me from wanting Adams on the Houston Texans. It just means that I may not want the Texans to pursue him as agressively by throwing him more money.

Adams wants to play football. That was clear from the ESPN article posted here. We have a logjam. Maybe our options at depth aren't the best but we still have a logjam regardless. Because of that, we may not be his ideal football destination.

you guys aint right :)

first off Samuel Adams is not a great brew, well you have to be specific since they offer dozens of examples but for now I'm going to assume the widely available Boston Lager from your neighborhood ice house. hey they almost sucked me into their little competition, but as the fine print read "if you win the recipe is ours" no thanks.

anyway Sam Adams is not a fit (no I did not say he was unfit just that he is not a good fit for the 4-3 more of a 3-4 NT I think alot of you are having Capers flash backs). the Texans probably had their best draft/undrafted rookie class ever coming into training camp, for the first time ever we have both depth & talent, no need to occupy a valueable roster spot with someone not part of future going forward.

give me a glass of water instead

ps: as I write this my Russian Imperial Stout is the real run stopper :cowboy1: :shots:

Gilbert Brown is the biggest DT this side of Corey Simon. Sam Adams makes him look like Jevon Kearse.

Should we prepare for a shift in the Earth's gravitational pull?

How will this impact global warming?

I just hope he comes here so we can make fat jokes again. I miss Victor...

The Bush Administration is responsible for turning Rosie O'Donnel into what she is today.

I could live with the War on Terror and the Patriot Act...but thats crossing the line :pirate:

It's clear she was a secret plot to undermine the left. Who else? Michael Moore has to be another....

Sam Adams was at his best in the 4-3 with Baltimore and Buffalo.

If he's got anything left in the tank, that is an upgrade over Travis Johnson.

Adams is a 1 technique runstuffer that would play NEXT to Travis Johnson, he wouldnt replace him. He would spell Zigonia or however you spell his name or Maddox. Dont forget we also still have Thomas Johnson. Travis Johnson is in the rotation with Okoye, if we get rid of TJ wich I doubt, We would need another 3 technique not a 1 tech runstuffer.

You are correct, but I could see the Texans experimenting with moving Travis Johnson to the 1 technique position during training camp.

I dont care if Sam Adams is a run stuffing DT. He can still help mentor Okoye and here's why:

1) He's a 3 time pro bowler. Surely he knows some tricks that could help Okoye.

2) He was a big reason that SB Ravens defense was one of the best ever.

3) He has 14 years NFL/Playoff/Super Bowl experience. Maybe he learned something?

Plus, he doesn't just help Amobe, he helps out our linebackers by occupying blockers. DeMeco becomes Ray Lewis hopefully!!!

*Homer off*

Thats a great post.

You dont have to play the same tech. or even position to mentor someone. This guy would occupy TWO OL. Meaning the numbers would be stacked on our side now. He's no spring chicken anymore, so we're not going to get 30 snaps out of him. Get him at a good price and maximize his talents on and off the field. I'm sure he's seen it all.

Interesting that he is coming for a visit.

I worry about the Texans some against the run, and if Sam can play, he'd be interesting to see in a Texans uni. It will be interesting if they can make this make sense.

From Sam's perspective, he has the benefit to coming back to his home town. For someone who has moved around a lot, it might be nice to have tha familiarity. No state income tax helps too.

It will be interesting if Reebok can make the uni.

Nothing like coming home to retire. He has a year, maybe two, tops. Why would he not do it? (Besides the theory that we suck and will always suck)

he can eat 9827974120 ginger snaps.

That has inspired me to form a weight loss program for Travis Johnson. Just have Sam Adams follow him everywhere he goes, and TJ will be lucky if he can assemble a few scraps during each meal as Adams tears through the food. Think of it as portion reduction, and maybe even some exercise if they have to compete for it.
