yup it looks like it will be Walter as our #2 unless something crazy happens on the June cap casualty deadline. I also look for our TE (both Putzier and Daniels) to have a much larger role than in the past. We should have an easier time throwing short to middle range passes over the middle of the field. That is prime time TE area.

Yep, and if they play cover 2 on us, Daniels should have a field day with that seam finding radar of his. gonna be interesting. I think the 2 main questions now left to answer are Mathis and TJ. But ya never know, maybe Kubiak is just keeping things under wraps. Maybe there are still soome surprises.

I am more impressed with AJ than anything else in that article. He is mentoring the young guys and trying to help them get better. I do not think Moulds aor some of the vets we have had in the past would take to doing that. They would see it as a threat to their playing time. After watching the barber footage on Texans TV and now reading this about AJ's comments it is a wonderful thing to have veterns that do not mind being a mentor to the young players.

AJ is definitely a class act. It is also nice to see that oour young guy's are hungry for information. I also like Kubiaks attitude towards this team having said earlier that it does'nt matter how much you make or how long you have played, the ones that will play are the one's that produce at OTA's and TC.
I like this approach because it does bring about better competition and must make ahungry player work harder knowing there is a shot that he could start for the team. Our coaching staff has done a great job bringing in smart, competitive vet's to mix with our young players. And I think we will all be surprised at the product that hits the field this year.

Moulds did a LOT of mentoring last year. Moulds and AJ looked like twins they hung out so much on the sideline.

Sorry, but I'm not at all sold on Walter as being a legit #2 in this league. I see him as maybe a #3 slot type guy myself. I hope I am wrong, but I don't see this guy doing much to draw coverage away from AJ.
We have only worked with one WR the last five years. Whoever our QB looked to, that was the progression. If Schaub can go through normal progressions it opens up so many opportunities and allows us to see if we have value at the WR position. I am looking forward to seeing what a normal playbook looks like with WRs catching the ball in the middle of the field, is that still allowed in the NFL because they have not seen that in Houston since the early 90's.

I think Walters can be a number two, although we can definitely do better. I think David Carr hurt the development of a lot of our recievers and TE's that we've had, and I think that trend continued through last year. I'm really high on Schaub and I think he is going to be a top 5 QB in this leauge. With that said, I'm not too worried about Walters because I think Schaub is going to spread the ball around and make guys look a little better than they are. JMHO.

I guess I just never heard about him being that big of a mentor last year. Maybe it is being put out there more. The young players are talking up a storm at how much AJ is there for them and to answer questions and talk about what to do in certain situations. Of course I only get that because of the comments made on texans TV.
I remember that, but at the time, I also thought, what about the other receivers, who needed it just as much or more than AJ? I didn't hear anything about Walters, Mathis, or Anderson getting invited to their slumber parties.

Kubiak likes to reward hard workers with playing time. Walters is one of those hard workers.
Ultimately, he is the competition on the field who will determine who gets more PT. The Texans put a premium on practicing well, and hopefully playing well.
Steve McKinney had problems getting on the field last year because his nicked up injuries slowed him down in practice. I think the way he eventually got to play was injuries and the guy in front of him wasn't doing the job.

I think Walters is going to surprise a few people. The fact is - and I hate to go there - a QB makes all the difference. Case in point is Gaffney, who got cut after a few seasons under Carr. Next thing you know he's catching Tom Brady passes in the playoffs. Obviously Gaffney was not the problem. He needed a QB that could get him the ball with some consistency.
The Bengals didn't want to let him go, and had intentions of re-signing him, IIRC. I just don't think he's been given a good shot to prove himself, but 2007 will be that chance.

Just a random thought, but what about signing someone who will be cut June 1? I mean, Jags fans are talking like Wilford will be cut in J'ville. He would give us a physical presence at WR that none of the other options can.

I don't know what you base that on with the little we know and have seen of him, but like yourself I truly hope you're right on this one.

IMO we know enough about him that he is definately capable of running the offense with some effeciency. he has been in the WCO system since college and with every system is new terminology, so i would think that is going to be the biggest thing for him to learn. the team is also trying to include some GB style plays with sherman being the OC this season - more so in the ground attack than the passing game. so there is going to be a learning curve there, but its something the entire offense will be going through.
but you are right in saying we have little game tape of him. not sure if i would project him to produce as a top 5 qb at this point, i would say he produces in the 10-15 range with a chance to crack the top 10. but whether its 10-15 or top 5, its going to be exciting!

it really doesn't matter what he based it on...he stated that it was "JMHO" which means that it was just his honest opinion, with "opinion" being the operable word. Opinion doesn't have to be based on anything. Whether it is realistic or not doesn't really matter. Everyone has an opinion, and like they say "Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one, and they usually stink." So allow him to use his.

I'm not quite as opptimistic, but I do feel Schaub has all the ingredients for a success story. I hope he does well. there has been quite a few success stories with backup QB's like him that got stuck behind a etched in stone starter, then went on to have great careers once they got the chance to show their stuff. Brady, Favre, Montanna, etc

Come down off your high horse there podnah! If everyone threw unbased opinions around, this forum and others like it would be even more full of crap. I was just challenging him to where he was getting that feeling about Schaub since I can't quite get a feel on where or how he's going to do with little history of pt in the NFL.
I hope he is in the top 3 for QB's at the end of the season, I just can't say for sure yet.

I think a lot of the opinion on Schaub is coming from the fact that Matt is not "He who must not be named in Houston". The change at QB is a great thing for everyone involved. Hell, NFLN ran a 7 minute spot on why they think Schaub will succeed where "HWMNBNIH" could not. We won't know until we see what happens in Training Camp and Pre-Season. From the first couple of glimpses I've seen from the OTA clips, I like the way Schaub looks.

All of this talk of who the #2 WR will be and how good the QB will be is superfluous. What matters is how good will the O-Line be, and I have heard very little to make me believe that they will be as improved as they would need to be to make the Texans as good as some of you think they will be.

Whether you agree with him or not I think he meant what he said and if there's one thing Kubiak does know about it's the passing game. I think when Moulds was let go, part of the reason stated was that Kubiak had confidence in Walters.

Perhaps you haven't heard. We've picked up Matt Schaub. That will fix all the o-line problems. Also, the Texans never really had o-line problems to begin with.
Of course I agree with you, but I've gone twelve rounds on this before. There are just a lot of fans on the boards right now who either think there really isn't an o-line problem or that most of the problems with the o-line were the QB's fault.

So, I guess my question is this... what are the pros and cons on Kevin Walter? I watched the majority of the Texans games on TV last year but can't recall anything about KW. With that said I generaly covered my eyes on obvious passing downs. Is he too slow? Runs poor routes? Above average hands?

I was superfluous once..No that was superflatuous. Sorry. I agree that O line is important, but it did not have to improve much to maybe make a difference. Combine that with Green, Daniels back from injury, Schaub, etc maybe we will see improvement.
