Now, make sure y'all don't read the title as Gene Simmons... :splits:

Texans running back Ahman Green asked around the locker room before he even approached Jason Simmons. Green wanted to know if he was wasting his time.

He didn't know Simmons well, and, even more importantly, he didn't know how attached the Texans safety was to the No. 30.

"Everybody was like, 'He's a good guy. He's going to work something out with you someway or somehow,' " Green said.

Green, who started wearing 30 even before attending Nebraska, became optimistic but still wasn't sure what it might cost him. The tradition around the NFL is that if you want someone else's number, you pay them.

When Green finally asked, Simmons shocked him.

"He said, 'Sure, but I'd like you to make a down payment on a single-parent home through a foundation or charity,' " Green said. "I was like, 'Yeah I'm all on board. That's easy. Tell me where to write the check to.'

"So instead of putting the money into his pocket, he's going to put in into somebody else's home and help them get their life started."....

I loved that segment on the OTA Day 2 video on the Main Texans site. It brought a tear to my eye. I love the guys that Houston has been getting. How many times have we hear of guys getting paid for their number, what the heck? At least something great has already come out of Green in Houston!

Amen brother, that is class.

I wish the Chron would run more stories like this because I'm sure there are more out there. I'll say the one thing McNair has gotten right from the begining is the character of this team. There are a lot of good people here.

Saw this on 13News last night. Simmons showed a lot of class in doing this and this should help some disadvantaged families in our local community.

Great Piece, and like Hagar said, I wish they would run more stories like this as well. Show people that there aren't just Pacman, and TO types in the NFL.

By far the best "jersey number buyback" story I've ever heard. I still think you can a see a little shock on Green's face every timehe re-tells the story.

I would love to see Schaub wear #7 but it aint gonna happen. I think Schaub likes #8 and at the end of the day, that's all that matters.

I've always liked Jason as well. Saw a monsterous hit delivered in a game a few years back and asked, "Who laid that hit? #30?!" Liked him ever since.

By the way, OzzO.....I did think the title of this thread said Gene Simmons....ha ha. The old KISS fan in me rose up.
 
That board is brutal. I read a thread, and (I believe it was you) was told that all the players the Texans pick were horrible, and only Okoye has a shot at being something in a few years. Then some other poster posted the Titans' draft pick, and basically said all of their players were immaculate and Chris Henry is a freak.

Can never get through to them.

HOUSTON -- When Ahman Green arrived in Houston he figured he'd have to go deep into his pockets to get his beloved No. 30 from longtime Texan Jason Simmons.

Green was right about the switch costing him, but not in the way he expected. Simmons said he'd gladly surrender the number if Green made the down payment on a home for a single parent.

The deal was a relief to Green, who signed as free agent with the Texans after playing in Green Bay since 2000. The running back admitted to being nervous that he wouldn't be able to get his number.

He readied himself for what he thought might be an awkward conversation since Simmons had worn the number for Houston since the team's inception in 2002. But as soon as he got the question out, he knew it wouldn't be a problem.

"He said what he wanted to do and I said: 'Yeah I'm all on board. That's easy,"' Green said. "Tell me where to write the check to. So instead of putting the money into his pocket, he's going to put in into somebody else's home, house and help them get their life started."

I'm checking into this thread late, but I just wanted to add that Simmons has been one of my favorite Texans since the start. He's a consummate team player and a great guy off the field. The referenced article is just further confirmation. It's hard rooting for these less popular players sometimes, because they end up on the short end of the numbers game with teams (see: Troy Evans), but Simmons is well worth pulling for.
