On the old TT board, as we discuss option for a new QB, Shaft75 & I were among those who did not mind to trade for Schaub and give him the chance to compete for the starting spot.
What I did not like is the combination of the draft picks involved and the money we pay out. Risk vs. reward.
You look at Leinart and his 6 yr $51 M deal.
We are paying Schaub as much as that.
Except Leinart contract has an escalator clause which states that if he's injured or for some reason cannot play in one of the first 4 years, he would leave quite a big chunk of that money on the table.
So, in looking at options, I mentioned signing Garcia and draft Kevin Kolb.
Garcia deal with the Bucs was for about the same money, but only if he leads the Bucs to the play-offs.
Garcia is currently playing well for the Bucs. But that is expected of him.
ie., less risk both financially and personel wise.
In the meanwhile, Kolb is wowing the eagles fans in every aspect of his game.
His 4 yr contract is $4.32 M with $2.6M guaranteed, I believe.
Somebody mentioned Garcia didn't want to sign with the Texans the year before, most likely because of the $$$ put on the table at the time, IMO.
We can always trade down 2 spots and give away the 2nd pick in 08 to guarantee the results.
Just the same, I stated that I will support any QB who wears a Texan uniform and that we have enough talent and depth this year to be very competitive with either Schaub or Rosenfels at the helm if need be.
The only point, which I assume that many of the people who were apprehensive most likely was making, is that will Schaub be the franchise QB that we've been looking for. It is more than reasonable to be cautious about that move.
Will he be good enough to lead us deep into the playoffs and hopefully the SB in a couple of years or three, or four?
By mid-season this year, we are suppposed to lift that expansion tag and throw it in the dump. Now we should raise the bar, and start having lofty expectation of the team just like fans of any other team in the NFL.
And many of those teams that have high hope still have questions regarding their QB for one reason or another: the Eagles, the Bears, the Ravens to name a few.
Even Mcnabb, and Mcnair are still scrutinized, so why not Schaub.
On the other hand, JMO, Schaub has the benefit of the doubt for at least this season. One and half year at most.
I continue to support him, and wants him to do well, and will become a believer when he really shows me he's capable of the aforementioned task.
That doesn't mean we can't call him out for making a bone head decision.
Even Warren Moon made those mistakes, years after he had been in the NFL.
He'd get called out but he was also appreciated for all the great plays he made.
