Texans sign Rutgers CB Derrick Roberson

According to nfldraftguys, he's even faster.

Derrick Roberson (CB – Rutgers)
. Unfortunately Derrick wasn’t working out on Friday, but the numbers (and watching RU play) tell me what I needed to know – he can play. His vertical leap is an astounding 42.5”, which more than compensates for his average height (5’10”). He has solid speed and his leaping ability is out of this world, so playing corner at the next level is a distinct possibility. Late word from Tuesday’s workouts have him running a 4.33 forty, which definitely aligns well with his Rutgers Pro Day time of 4.28. I would not be surprised at all to hear his name called on April 29th (Day 2) of the draft.
 
I dont know anything about this guy but I do know that USUALLY someone with his athleticism gets drafted unless one of 2 things happens:

1) He gets caught butt naked snorting coke off of a male stripper.

2) He's more of an athlete than a football player.

you cant coach athleticism

unfortunately you cant really coach a mean streak either, lets hope he has one though :pirate:
 
As awful as we are at CB anybody has a shot at sticking.

His speed would be a great addition to our defensive backfield too.
 
perhaps me saying you cant coach one is a little too extreme, but the best pure football players are mean SOBs who enjoy putting the hurt on the other guys. You can kick someone around and sort of get a streak established, but theres something that seems a little unteachable about the thrill and enjoyment of inflicting pain

These guys have practically went the way of the dinosaur with all the NFL rule changes and the specific way you have to hit someone.

We will never again see DB's or Safeties like a Steve Atwater or a Chuck Cecil.

Which is a shame, I mean, Don Beebe and Ernest Givens were only paralyzed for a few hours and they still continued to play.

you cant still put the fear of god into receivers, it just may draw the flag. And you can do so without sacrificing coverage, or else you become roy williams.

Your right though, they've mostly gone away as a way of life in the NFL. you can still see the missle shots when a receiver is in mid air, but those types are definetely a species on the decline.

If he's mean and determined give him a shot, he has all the tools
 
If anything he could be good on special team coverage.

Remember the guy who caught up to Mathis in the Raiders' game?

Stanford Routt. He ran track at UH.
Mathis best 40 was probably 4.28
I'm not sure about Routt, but they both ran in the low 4.30s at the combine in 04.
Mathis was 2nd in the NCAA 200m in 03, with Routt right behind him.

So speed can help here.

I used to love watching this guy hit people. Talk about guys afraid of coming over the middle.

With this speed could he be used in the return game? Not sure if he has any experience in it but hey this is what practice is for and spring games.

I don't think Roberson will be used in the return game. Between Mathis, Wynn, Jacoby Jones and Terry Richardson; all who have return expeirence in the pros or college.
