Why Levi Brown ranks above Joe Thomas?
It comes down to floor and ceiling. Joe Thomas’ floor is Robert Gallery, an ineffective RT who needs help most of the time his ceiling is becoming a good but no elite LT. Levi Brown’s floor on the other hand is as a dominate mauling RT, while is ceiling is a Pro Bowl caliber LT, ala Jamaal Brown. Thomas will always be hampered by his short’ish arms and while he may be able to overcome his lack of a great base it’ll take a while; while Brown’s faults all appear to be technique based which means a good coach can correct them.

Why Brady Quinn ranks above JaMarcus Russell?
Same as above, it’s a floor and ceiling issue. Russell’s ceiling is as high as anybody’s in this draft, and his floor might be just as low as his ceiling is high. Showing up to the combine looking “doughy” to the combine shows a poor attitude or a whole lot of immaturity. Quinn’s floor is probably as an effective, not great NFL QB; his ceiling maybe as a playoff winning QB (which is nowhere as good as Russell’s ceiling).

Chris Houston:
I think he’s an Ahamad Carroll clone, somebody whose physical game will lead to a bunch of penalties or a bunch of toast sessions as a pro. Yes he shut down quite a few good receivers, except for Sidney Rice; but the “illegal contact 5 yards from the line of scrimmage” penalty could be renamed the Chris Houston penalty.

Sidney Rice:
I will be cautious of any Steve Spurierr produced wide receiver till they start to succeed at the next level.


This is my first crack at a top 50, so I'll take comments of any kind.

Interesting analysis of Joe Thomas. After can't miss Robert Gallery, your point about him cannot be taken lightly. But, I would still take Thomas over Brown at this point simply due to the consenus of professional scouts opinions.

I see you've bought into the anti-Jarrett hype. I still think he's the best WR in the draft not named Calvin Johnson.

Jason Hill out of Washington State is as talented and accomplished as any of the mid-late 1st round WRs being touted.

Josh Wilson and Marcus McCauley could be immediate starters at CB or nickel back. Wilson is also an excellent KR.

I still think Kevin Kolb is the #3 QB in the draft. Look for the team that doesn't get Brady Quinn (Cleveland or Miami) to take Kolb in the 2nd.

Tim Crowder has a lot of value in this draft. He can play either DE spot, and is an every down lineman.

I still think Kevin Kolb is the #3 QB in the draft. Look for the team that doesn't get Brady Quinn (Cleveland or Miami) to take Kolb in the 2nd. Disagree, Kolb has spent too much time in the same system, earning him a "system QB" label, which hurts his draft status.

I'm with the crowd on Jarrett, but I like your other takes.

I watched some film on Jarrett, and while I usually think straight line speed is sometimes over-rated, they pointed out that he is somewhat slow out of his breaks and so forth. You could see that on film. I just don't know how well he will separate against good NFL corners. I wouldn't touch him in round one myself.

I've heard that criticism before. But really, how much separation does any WR get in the NFL? AJ doesn't even get a lot of separation, and he's a college sprint champion.

Eventually, WRs have to make catches in traffic with defenders hanging off them. No WR prospect does that better than Dwayne Jarrett. Not even Calvin Johnson.

But AJ got seperation in college. I think Jarrett relies on his body to much to help him make the play in traffic; yet Chris Houston punked him at the line all during the USC/Arkansas game, which implies to me that while he's big he does not play that big or tough. Could Jarrett be good? Yes, but I think he could also bust fairly easy.

What I'm finding out is that there are an awful lot of very differing opinions on the quality of the top three tackles. Some people have Staley right up there with Thomas, some have Levi better than the other two, some have Levi and Staley up around the twenties, some have all three in the top ten.

Just insane.
