Weak 1st Round Class?

Everyone I've been talking to knows I've stated that there are about 6 elite prospects and about 12 first round talents after that before the next tier...seems I may be on to something.

I've spent the last few days asking several NFL personnel people and scouts what kind of draft this is, and this is the conclusion I've drawn: This league is scared witless about the money it's about to pay this class of rookies, because there aren't enough first-round-caliber players who deserve it.

One executive I spoke with -- a smart football man whom I trust very much -- said his team gave only 18 players first-round grades in its recently concluded draft meetings. That means, as he said, a bunch of second-round-quality players (at least, in this team's view) will be drafted between the middle and end of the first round, and they will make more money than players with holes deserve to make. "I bet you'll see plenty of teams in the mid- to low-first-round trying to trade down, and I bet they'll have a lot of trouble finding trading partners,'' this personnel guy said.

Interresting I did not think it was that low. I kew that there were a lot of questions but makes it sound as though the draft could be the worst in the history of the draft.
 
This should be very interesting, and makes our tenth spot that much more valuable. The last 10+ teams will either try to trade up to a better spot or trade their 1st rounds down in order to avoid paying big money to someone that they believe might not deserve it.

Of course, fans will not understand this lack of depth and will become very upset with their teams making seemingly unpopular decisions.

p.s. Maybe our second round this year wasn't worth all that much, ' eh? ;)

I think our second is very valuable because it help land Schuab.

Here is hoping that it does make the 10th pick more valuable. :toast2:
 
Last year's draft class was deep in terms of talent. Luckily we were able to grab 4 or 5 starter quality players thanks to our FO. We can't very well expect to find that many this year. It seems to me that the talent level in particular draft years seems to by cyclical. You'll have one really good draft thats deep in top talent, and then you'll have a year or two or three where the first round isn't filled with first round quality talents.
 
So if 18 is this year's talent line, how does it effect trading down in the draft?

I think a trade down is easier. If we still want to stay above 18 you might have to take slightly less value but teams like the Bills or the Packers may be willing to trade up. If you trade below 18 you might be able to get more value for the trade, and still get 2 god players instead of 1 great player. The question is what's worth more 1 impact player or 2 good palyers? Personally I don't want to trade down any further then GB, if we trade at all.
 
Most teams don't have a ton of needs like we do. Some teams may covet one guy in particular in say a pool of 6 players and may want to trade up so that they don't have to 'hope' he falls to them. We may be happy with any of those six players so we can afford to trade back.

I think that may happen, hell I think Patrick Willis is the guy who could the focus of a trade. But I think it's imperative that the Texans still manage to get an impact player this year.
 
Gosselin said that there are 7 blue chippers and an additional 24 players with 1st round grades. Sounds like somebody's been blowing smoke at King.

wouldn't be the first time. Gosselin is much more credible than King.
 
Moves the trade down line a bit, but I doubt the Teaxans will be able to trade out. The other thing Gosselin said that the only team with a good shot of trading down is Detriot.
 
This may be true, but i still think this draft is pretty deep, with a lot of 2-3 round grade prospects, which may make our trade for schuab look a little dumb.

Yeah because getting a starting NFL QB, with NFL game expeirence, would be a horrible round 2 pick. :shades:

he started 2 games and played mop up duty in a couple of others. Pre-season doesnt count there buddy


we also give up a second in next years draft. Personally im not all that upset but you can still draft players in the second round that turn into absolute beasts, and we'll be missing out on that oppurtunity :cool:

Pre-season counts, so does mop-up time, so deos practice, so does just sitting in on meetings, and espically the three years of a full time weight regimime. The pro game is so vastly different then the colleg game that just being part of it for three years is invaulable.

yes it is different, and that will be more obvious once teams get more film on schuab. Theres no denying that he has a little body of work to go by and once that expands his weaknesses may be exposed (*cough cough tony romo*)


I do agree that he's better then any second round QB in this draft, but maybe not better then ANY player we couldve gotten.
