I have no feeling on way or the other on this one, except it help's out the depth at WR.

Probably takes Ginn off of our draft board.

I don't follow. Why?

I was thinking training camp fodder? Albeit more talented training camp fodder, but I don't see really why we have him when we have AJ, Mathis, and Walter out there. Do we really plan on going 4-wide that often?

If so, I don't see him as much more than the 4th WR on the depth chart and that certainly doesn't preclude us from taking Ginn.

Actually with Davis' return skills & our lack of depth at WR at the moment I wouldn't say that Ginn being off our board is much of a stretch at all. I don't think Ginn would give us much more than what Mathis does, and I wouldn't spend a 1st round pick on him.

The signing of Davis doesn't mean that the Texans won't take a WR early, but I just don't see them taking one at 10. Maybe trading back down to later in round one and picking up Bowe, Rice, or Meachem. I think a FS or CB is going to be the pick in round one though once the draft rolls around.

Ouch - I totally disagree with that. Ginn is a real receiver and he'd probably play more than a handful of games a year.

I don't know how much of a real receiver he is. I recall hearing that at least one NFL team was having Ginn do workouts as a corner (the position where he was ranked #1 at coming out of HS). I don't know I hear alot of the same things about Tedd Ginn that I heard about Chris Gamble. The only real receiver I saw when I watched Ohio State play was Gonzales.

I think he'll have more of an impact as a return man than a wideout, and I see him more in the mold of a Dante Hall/Jerome Mathis. Talented? Absolutely. Worth a first round pick? In my mind no.

I don't think this impacts the Texans draft plans at all. WR was a very high priority before the signing and it remains so now. At best, he is a 4th or 5th option imo.

I watched Davis in 5 or 6 games over two years while he was in Cleveland and kept up with him a fair bit throughout those seasons as well (fantasy football degenerate). I run a little contrary to the opinions posted here so far. I think he has a real chance to be our #3 WR. He has experience and speed. He's had some problems with injuries, which have set him back in his career path, but he has talent. He can take a crossing route or hitch route to the house, and he can definitely stretch the field vertically. I think he'll compete with Walter for our #2 position, but ultimately, I think he'll land in the slot, which might be the best spot for him anyway.

Furthermore, I am of the opinion that Mathis will be cut at some point. I think he's gotten on the bad side of Kubiak and staff, and if he doesn't do something to right himself, he's gone. He doesn't appear inclined to do so at this point.

I liked Davis when he was at V Tech and with the Browns. It seemed every catch the guy made it was a TD or a chain mover.

He played with Browns in the Couch years and then with the Pats and last year with Losman. This could be the right place at the right time, but I would not hold my breath.

As some have said Davis is more a threat to Mathis than he is to challenging for a #2 role. In my mind this looks like a little bit of Mathis insurance in the event he is cut loose or traded by the team or if he was to become injured once again.

Assuming we pick up a WR in the draft I wouldn't be unhappy if our receivers were AJ, (Meachem/Hill/Smith/ ?), Walter, Anderson, Davis or Mathis. It would be an area that could still use improvement via the draft or FA next season, but wouldn't be as glaring a hole as it is at the moment.

I think that he is immediately one of our top 3 receivers.

AJ miles in front, then Walters and Davis in a battle for the 2 spot. Not a great battle to have for your #2 spot but it defintely is improvement in that area which lessons the urgency for a WR in the draft.

Another savvy move from Smith and co.

In all honesty, with the $ amount that he signed for (850K, I believe), if Davis can beat out Walters it will be a compliment to him, coming back after all those injuries.

Funny thing I notice in his draft profile somewhere that he couldnt find the first down marker. But he had gone completely different in his Cleveland years, producing many first downs for the Browns.

The facts remaining, however, that the Browns traded him to NE for a lower round draft choice. The Pats did not resign him, nor the Bills. And he had a hard time competing for the #4 spot as well as the returning job.

My guess is he had lost a step.
From what I can gather, his hands were never really great asset, his speed was.

I don't think Wynn is sweating, the guy is forever an underdog.

What I see is that the coaching staff doesnt want to go into the draft without covering all the bases.
Still, I agree that both Mathis and Davis are iffies.
(And I love them both for their speed.)

OK, I'll bite...
Who would be interested in a trade involving Mathis, and what can you get for an oft-injured, ex-probowl returner with brick hands and poor route running skills?

Andre Davis was good. He's had a few off seasons recently (not literally, just hasn't played good). On a team with a bunch of mediocre recievers last year, the Bills, he still was a no factor and maybe got 2 catches. We signed him for such a low price because he will be no more than a #3 WR for us - I'm not the highest on Kevin Walter but he is better than Davis. I'm hoping for Bowe/Meachem at #10 (hopefully we trade down).

Might not get anything for him. KC is shopping around Hall who's only claim to fame is his terrific return abilities. If KC is somehow able to get a draft pick in exchange for Hall then you could expect the Texans to look for something similar if a team was to inquire about Mathis. Perhaps more since Mathis has fewer miles on him than Hall has in KC. I'd imagine that him being released would be the more likely scenario.

At first it may look like a long shot at shopping Mathis but then you look at what he did last year with such limited playing time. He had an 80+ return on one of his only returns of the year. And you look at what is happening with special teams in this age with Hester being a major reason why the Bears made it as far as they did and with teams such as Cleveland looking for a returner after theirs was signed by Jacksonville, it would seem possible.

who cares about this move he had a whole 2 more receptions than I did last season. that will about some up Davis.

Overall, it says more about the state of the Texans WRs not named Andre Johnson than anything really good about Andre Davis. The Texans' options are that bad at the moment. My guess 5 months from the start of the season is that Walter and Davis play some form of WR2A and WR2B unless someone else is added through the draft or free agency.

I think Davis will just add another vanilla option for us to evaluate at WR. The FO wanted to add depth (no matter how skilled) to our roster so we could take the best available selection in the draft, let's just hope they actually do it!

Davis played great for us last year as a special teamer, he was no doubt the best after Stamer went down. If nothing else you have yourselves a ST's ace.
