Penn State's Brown could be target in draft
Spencer may not be available at tackle after suffering injury early in 2006 season

PHOENIX - Coach Gary Kubiak disclosed on Tuesday that the Texans may select a left tackle in the first round of the draft despite signing free agent Jordan Black and re-signing Ephraim Salaam.

Although the Texans need another wide receiver to play opposite Andre Johnson, Kubiak said they might target a left tackle because Charles Spencer is still only 50-50 to make it back by the first game of the season.

"Right now, there's a big question about whether or not he makes it back," Kubiak said about Spencer being healthy for the opener. "I think we have to operate as if he's not going to be there."

Good job Kubiak... Now Arizona is sure to take Brown, ensuring Branch, Hall, or Landry will fall to 10.

I think the Texans will ultimately move down (possibly to #21) and take Joe Staley from Central Michigan. I'm not sold on Levi Brown as a franchise LT that high in the draft. Maybe we take Staley late in the 1st and make a run at WRs like Chansi Stuckey, David Ball and Mike Walker later in the draft.

While it does lean heavily toward Brown as #1, we do have to recall that this is total Smoke and Mirrors season till draft day.

Then again...considering how well Kubiak guaged talent for offensive line in the third round last year, he might wait to grab his lineman there, and not take the obvious choice. Same for receiver.

I do find it interesting he likes a McCaffrey-esque style as a #2WR.

Okay, he identified the needs on offense, which most of us knew anyway. I didn't really see anything in his quotes that indicate he's interested in Brown.

McClain is often wrong about....everything so it's probably in his own interst to use weasel words when making statements like: Penn State's Brown could be target in draft.

I know Smith has said we'll take BPA, but I'll be surprised if Brown is in the top 10 of our draft board.

McClain should have asked about defensive needs too.

I think this team is confident in Spencer. And with that confidence....you don't go spending the number 10 pick on a player who is there to fill in for a starter who might not be ready for the first few games. It is the NUMBER 10 pick....not a 4th round fill-in. So either this is just a straight up lie (which i believe), or we need to be very nervous because obviously they don't have a lot of faith that Spencer will make it back....or is our future LT. Which means we can sign him up under the 'wasted pick' category, and start praying again this year that Brown is somehow ready to be one of the very few LT's ever to be up to the task their rookie year.

Fluff piece by McClain with no new news. He's just trying to stir things up after saying Brown won't be the target ever since Black got signed.

Yeah...OK. These guys were actively shopping Carr and trying to bring in every FO QB this off-season, but they told everyone who asked that David was still the starting QB on the team. This regime does not show their cards at all. In fact, saying that they are thinking OT in the first round makes me believe we want to go safety with the 10 pick. It is great to hear coach interviews in the off-season, but absolutely useless to try to read into anything that they say.

I hope we trade down...

or he could just be preparing us that levi may be the bpa.

or he could be saying we're going to trade way down and take a lt in the 20's.

I heard that the Texans are targeting Sepulveda at # 10.

That means about as much as what Mcclain says ;)

Its all speculation until draft day.

whats funny is that he finally speaks the truth yet nobody believes him :heh:

He's speaking the truth but ... for what reason. (I wish there was a Rock Eybrow Raise emoticon.)

He's gotta know that Levi is probably gone by 10. So who is he talking to and what is he REALLY saying. :poker:

he just told you  Spencer is 50/50 & if the right player is availble @ the tackle position he takes a serious look with the 1st pick. doesn't say where the 1st pick will be, nor does he directly announce to the world who, just that we're not going into another season with a huge question mark @ LT after Carr & now investing the farm in Shaub :twocents:

Well if he really was being sneaky....his comments could take to mean that technically Spencer may not start the first game of the season, but that doesn't mean he won't start the third or fourth game either. And that's why Black or Salaam or someone else could fill in or could get extra help somewhere in the draft.

I mean its a bunch of gobbly gook meant to sound like something special.

Its not like it is a surprise to anyone the Texans want to improve the OL in the draft. The main question is what round.

The WR reference was obscure too. Sounded like Kubiak was kicking himself for not calling more plays to Walker, but that he wanted some extra competition for him in camp to have him win the job outright. Again, it is no surprise the Texans will draft a WR, only which round it is a priority.

Considering everyone (major media) just "knew" we were drafting offense last year in the first round, I wouldn't be surprised if we break consensus again this year. Which probably means a defensive pick since most media drafts had us as AD or Brown or Ginn (a few with Landry).

If you studied the senior bowl week at all...and Staley's reformances in it...including the game...you wouldn't make this public...really. Stick to the WR and RB and other skill guys... you seem to be quite good with those.

And Da nile ain't just a river in Egypt. Smoke signal....if ya want Carriker....we'll move down with ya Denver....for a price. You guys just don't like taking o-linman in the first .... I got it.

We've been telling them for three months and they still don't get it. Too funny beerlover. Kubes is telling them. McClain is telling them....it's All day and Leron shock.

What's funny, is if Arizona takes Levi with the 6th pick, it's going to be looked at as reasonable, understandable, and considered a good pick.

If we take Levi with the 10th pick, it'll be considered a reach, that we should've traded down, and yet another stupid draft decision by the Houston Texans.

I guarantee you we'll draft a tackle not named Levi, or Joe in the '07 draft.

I disagree. The only talking point the so-called experts have to fall back on when talking about the Texans is "their offensive line is terrible/David Carr was sacked a gazillion times blah blah blah," so if the Texans were to draft Levi Brown with the tenth pick, the ignorati would most certainly praise it and do a flip-flop on the Schaub trade.

I'd put money on it. They know nothing else about the Texans--drafting a LT with the tenth pick would fit perfectly into the narrative they want to tell.

But would it fit the Texans?

Maybe Kubes is saying that if Joe Thomas falls to 10 we will take him?!
Thomas would have to have a leg fall off before he gets to #10.

Which is the deeper position between LT & WR (Kubiak's stated greatest needs on offense)? Which position will the Texans be more likely to find a quality prospect in the 3rd round? This is so easy, even John McClain will eventually figure it out.

NO, eSpin will say something like this:

Mel Kiper: well that was not a bad pick but why did they not draft Reggie or Vince this year.

other guy: they were in last years draft mel.

Mel: yeah I know but how in the hell do you pass them up every year?

Suzy: Do you think Brady's cute?
