No we don't. You only get them if their contracts are up. That is why the Texans almost never get compensatory picks, we cut all of our guys early.
As it stands...nothing. We've signed Green, Black, Clark, Barber and Zgonina. We've lost Peek and Lewis Sanders. More signings than losses.

i always thought that if you lose a player that does well elsewhere you'll get a pick..doesnt matter if you pick up a replacement...but i could be wrong too
Well, I think it should be as you suggest. But what the NFL has said regarding the top secret compensation formula states otherwise. The term "net loss" is included in their explanation. Furthermore, Green got a better contract than Peek & Sanders combined. The contract seems to be the largest component in determining what pick a team gets. Unless the NFL comes up with an entirely new formula (not possible without the NFLPA's agreement), there's no chance the Texans get a compensatory pick in the '08 draft.

A player to watch for who could be traded by draft day is Justin Smiley. Definitely a good OG but is entering the final year of his contract, and with the huge contracts guys like Dockery and Steinbach received this year, you can bet Justin Smiley will be getting paid after his rookie contract expires when the FA period begins in 2008. Plus he is more of a WCO oriented guard and doesn't really fit our power-running game scheme. We probably won't re-sign him because from what I understand Nolan/McCloughan don't believe in investing a lot of cash into the interior O-line, and we have David Baas ready to step in and fill that vacancy if Smiley were to leave. Well actually they spent a pretty good amount for an OG in Larry Allen, but the purpose of that signing was more of a signing to show David Baas the nuances of the game. So maybe look for Justin Smiley to be dealt for a 3rd.
