More Free Agents?

Well, now that we've traded away two picks and cleared cap space by cutting David and Dominick, I suspect a couple more somewhat significant free agent signings like:

Mike Doss
Joe Horn
Travis Taylor

Joe Horn has already signed with the Falcons, and Travis Taylor isnt a true #22 guy, but I would like Mike Doss, and if I'm not mistaken, we would be talking him from our rival Indy Colts

I didnt know Doss signed with Tampa

edit: nevermind

I don't know for sure, but isn't that money being spent on Schaub and resigning Vonta Leach? I won't be happy until I know that Leach is signed for sure. We need him badly if this team is going to have a successful running game. JMHO!

mike doss from ohio state university is available still he's 5'10'' and is a solid strong safety...question is how many strong safeties do we need on this team?...he's still a young guy but he's not a true FS

Great point. Many people keeping thinking that Strong and Free safeties are interchangeable. OBVIOUSLY they're not, ie Brown. We need a solid FREE safety. Don't get me wrong, if Doss could stay healthy he would be an improvement over Earl, but I don't think Earl's our problem. JMO

I think we will get at least one more FA, but not till we know how much cap space is left after the draft and what holes are still left..

If Earl or Brown has a partner @ FS who has coverage skills then either is acceptable as a SS. unfortunately most of the safties that make it to FA are going to be in the box guys.

I'm glad we didn't go after Hamlin. I don't think he'd be much of an upgrade over what we've already got.

I wouldn't be opposed to drafting Okoye at #10 and holding off on S until next season. If our line and pass rush improve, the play of our secondary will improve with it.

Thankfully this draft has a couple Free Safety prospects that can step in and start for us. I think we can get a starter with either first day pick and I hope we choose to go that route :)

You just start damaging a 1st round safety if you start him right away. With our defensive line and pass rush...he'll be running around like crazy back there trying to keep up. Okoye will help remedy this problem if he is selected say...#10!!

I think we might be out the FA market until after the draft. See what we get in the draft then se who gets cut after June 1st.

I think that we will wait until after the draft to sign anymore FA. Scouts.com has the following player rated as the top three at their positions.

CB-Asante Samuel/Patriots
Jason David/Colts
David Macklin/Cardinals

S-Gibril Wilson/Giants
Jordan Dabineaux/Seahawks
Terrence Kiel/Cardinals

WR-Antonio Bryant/49ers
Patrick Crayton/Cowboys
Ernest Wilford/Jaguars

Maybe a couple of these guys will be wearing Texans uniforms next year.

The front office is probably focusing all of its energy on evaluating the talent in the draft.

After the draft they'll be back to free agency.

Doss would be a complete waste of money.

He is absolutely terrible in coverage, which is why the Colts had no intention of bringing him back.

I don't know which safety position he plays in Indy but I'd say Mike Doss could certainly play FS for us. He has good coverage skills and is plenty quick. Quite frankly, I think he's a little undersized for SS.

Is Doss still available?

I can't believe nobody picked him up. He was a great performer for the colts in their playoff run. I believe he'd be an upgrade over either of our SS's, and then if we took Nelson/Landry in the first, we'd be looking at a very solid secondary.

I may be wrong, but Doss didn't even play during the Colt's Playoff run. You might be thinking of Bob Sanders.

mike doss didn't play in the playoffs this year with the colts because i think he was suspended by dungy for his off the field trouble...i maybe wrong but i think he was another guy who got caught with illegal firearms of some sort?...anybody remember what he got in trouble for?

I really think the Texans will treat the FS spot the same way did the TE spot last year. Use an early day 2 pick for a quality starter. Gattis, Wendling, Johnson, and McDonald would be some nice choices. Day One I think thier hands will full trying to land CB, DE, and WR. Trading back trying to land Ross or Revis is my guess.

I think we may be finished in FA till the June 1st cuts come. That way we can address areas we did not in the draft.

it will be interesting to see who gets cut after june 1st seeing how teams can designate two guys now as june 1st cuts

I want them to take the kid Craig Dahl from my home state university, North Dakota State U. to play FS. He had a tremendous combine and a nice career thus far.

sweeeet. thanks for the dropping the name. My site i go to for draft info had him ranked 38th going into the combine, but I'm guessing top 20 now. He ran a 4.53, lifted 17 reps on the 225 bench, and jumped a 35 vert. He also had a top 5 finish on all 3 of the cone shuttles, including the best time at the 60 yarder. I don't want to pretend to be a scout but just from what I hear that translete as a decent athlete with range and agility, so I'm thinking 5th. Thanks again for the name.

yeah but what about ball skills...what about football skills...40 times and everything else is great but it doesn't matter unless it translates to the football field...i know plenty of guys who can run the 40 in a 4.3 but none of them could ever play football

I agree, I don't know anything about his production on the field. I just root for small school guys who could develop given the oppurtunity since they seem to be lacking a lot training and coaching big school guys get. So even though it is not everything if their combine numbers gets scout to take notice, good for them.

i also wouldn't mind having al wilson or lavar arrington...i think lavar would be a good back up lb and he probably be cheaper than wilson

whats the word on al wilson and lavar arrington?

denver is trying to trade him but he just failed his physical so there is some medical issues with him now

lavar arrington is now considered to be one of the walking wounded in the NFL...he has way too many injuries right now to consider

Didn't Arrington overprice himself as a FA?

here is what i want to know, what did we really have to give up for matt, how many years of draft picks and how many years did we have to sacrafice

We sacrificed one year's 2nd round pick.
No, we sacrificed 2 draft positions, two 2nd round picks AND $48 million dollars. Go look at your tax return then look at $48,000,000.00. That's a LOT of money. No, this isn't a whiner post. It's merely an accurate accounting of what we paid.Matt Schaub may end up being our Moses, but we STILL paid a high price for him. Good or bad, GO SCHAUB!!!

we traded firsts with the falcons this year, moving to 10th, we gave them this year's second, and next years second. but as far as the valua of the player and the picks we gave up in the way of value points, it was about the same.

Value is in the eye of the beholder. Good OR bad.

He's saying we only sacrificed one 2nd rounder because there is a swap for 1st rounders and Schaub and this years 2nd rounder, with next year's being sacrificed.

That's what I meant in my post. Technically we gave them two picks and swapped firsts. However, we received a player, and kept our first rounder, so we only have one pick in the deal which will not bring a player. We only "sacrificed" one pick.

I KNOW how people are spinning it, but the REALITY IS, we gave up two draft positions and our '07 and '08 draft choices. You can spin it how you want to and say what you want to, but that is STILL what we gave up to get Schaub. You can't ignore the $48 mil, either( or at least the $7 mil in garauntees). That's lot to pay for a QB that has never been a starter.

I agree we gave up alot and are paying him good money based on what he's accomplished so far, but it's unfair to look at the deal as if we "sacrificed" three picks for one player. If you're still getting tangible value (an actual player) in a draft choice, I wouldn't describe that as a sacrifice.
