3rd-4rd Possession WR

This is not a post on 40 times or combine stats.

Being that Kubiak came out of the Broncos organization I was thinking about what WR he would want on this team. I suspect the Texans will be drafting either OL or DB in the first round, so it makes me think WR will be either the 3rd or 4th round pick. I also suspect the Kubiak really liked how the WR and TE roles and players were used in the super bowl years of the Broncos and wants to duplicate some of that here.

Well if AJ is similar to Rod Smith in nature, and Owens is the Shannon Sharpe mold TE, then there is one type of reciever Kubiak will be searching for. He will be looking for the next Ed McCaffrey in this draft. A possession WR, that is not speedy, but can read zones, use his body to provide space, is willing to take nasty hits to get first downs, and is a good blocking WR to help the running game.

I do not think Kubiak is looking for a speed demon since he could have got Lelie easily (that or he didn't like Lelie's attitude) before he signed with SF.

So from watching college football last year what receivers fit that bill? Jarrett obviously, but he is a first round pick. So who stood out for the third round as a possession receiver?

Its just my opinion, but I think Kubiak goes for a possession heady kind of receiver before he goes for a speed blazer.
 
What about the Texas Tech wrs...I haven't heard much about them and when I did see Hicks and the other guy they were 5th-7th rounders
 
He was a tad late on Wes Welker, but exactly.

Perhaps as a much later draft pick, one of the Boise State receivers.

I was very impressed how they performed against Oklahoma. They were not speed blazers, but they ran good routes and executed them and did things for the best of the team. It is very apparent to me that Kubiak does not want prima donnas. He wants humble, hard working, team players that execute their roles, whether called to block, set screens, or take hits for a first down.

good hands and runs good routes. goes over the middle. ran a 4.35, but doesnt play up to his timed speed. would be a good possession receiver.
 
You just described Keven Walters. Remember Kubiak's statement--playmakers--think speedy WR's, DE's, ballhawking DB's.
 
Anthony Gonzalez may be a good pickup in the 3rd. He's got good speed, reliable hands, and definitely knows how to get open.

My personal preference would be to take BPA in the 3rd, and pick up WR Dallas Baker from Florida in the 4th. Baker has a great frame at 6'3" and knows how to use it. He plays physical, knows how to get open, and has very reliable hands. I think he would be a great possesion WR.

I think he really likes Walters for the possession receiver/McCaffrey type of role. If he doesn't do something in FA, I expect him to look for a speed guy in the draft.

Strengths:
Has good size with a strong, solid build...Runs good routes and just knows how to get open...Physical and knows how to use his body...Was extremely productive and a big play threat...Hands are big and reliable...Good body control and adjusts well to poorly thrown balls...Natural athlete with nice quickness who timed faster than expected...Agile and elusive in the open field...Has a nose for the endzone.

Weaknesses:
Does not play up to his timed speed and he will have a considerably tougher time separating from pro corners...His concentration and focus
have been an issue at times...Has trouble beating the jam at the line...Is only an average blocker...Fell of as a senior and did not have the great final campaign that most were expecting.

Notes:
Almost went pro after his junior season...One of the most prolific wideouts in the college game the past few years...An overachiever whose lack of ideal physical tools will become more apparent at the next level...Is not the elite pro prospect his statistics might lead you to believe but he can still be a solid #2 or #3 option.

Sounds like he could be a decent 3rd rd pick for us if he's there. good routes, good hands, good size, and is fast.

all my guys fit the bill as possession receivers...and only one has the ability to be more...that's joel filani...the kid is a stud who is definetly under the radar because as usual everyone is labeling him as a product of the system...this makes me laugh most of the time

what do you want your receivers to do when the enter the pros...make the catches thay are supposed to and run the routes right...my guys do both...just no one knows how good they truely can be since we threw it 77% of the time...keep one thing in mind about filani the guy breaks tackles...anyone see the a&m game this past season...ask any aggie about filani's ability to make guys miss...they'll tell you

hicks is a guy who has a ton of attitude...the guy plays agree and finds ways to seperate from defenders...his positive traits lead me to believe he'll have the most success in a WCO...he's not a speed guy just a guy who finds the hole in the defense and catches the difficult balls...he'll make the catch in traffic...and once you get into the redzone it's over...he'll come down with it

robert johnson is a guy no one is talking about because he was considered our third receiver...he's a converted receiver...was originally a QB...came from juco as the number one juco QB in the nation back in 04...the guy can catch though...runs good routs...but he has attitude issues...he's been in coach leaches dog house before and that's why you don't see his name mentioned on the pro day workout
 
I've been warming up to the idea that Walter starts as our # 2 and we draft a speedy slot receiver in the draft.

I think Walter just needs a shot, he was stuck behind ocho cinco and hoosh in Cincy. Then he came here to play behind aj and emo. Whenever he did come in all I remember was him catching crucial third down passes and then going back to the sideline.

Another guy that deserves a chance is David Anderson, maybe now that we have Schaub our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th options will get more play in the passing game. I really liked this guy in college and the only catch he made this season was a really good play!!!

Walter and Anderson getting more opportunities + drafting a deep threat means we'll be okay at receiver this year imo.

PS: Didn't we bring Ashley Lelie in for a visit to start free agency?

Lelie did come in for a visit and signed with SF.

I think Kubiak could have got him and Kubiak knows Lelie since he coached him in Denver.

Lelie IMO is a speedy receiver, but has some attitude issues and does not have the best hands.

He can get open with his speed but he is known for not being able to haul in the passes, then whine about how he doesn't get enough balls.

The organization has been very secretive about what they are going after and I like it that way. Perhaps WR is not as big a weakness as the coaches think. Considering Carr never went down his receiver progressions in games its hard to see how the new talent did. Perhaps they felt good about cutting Moulds because they really liked what they saw in Walters in practice and his limited time in games.

We will get to find out in the draft on if they draft a WR and what kind of WR they draft will reveal the answer. I do think they will draft a WR simply because it is such a deep year for WR it would be silly to not get some depth and competition this year.

The fact that they cut Moulds says that they are drafting a WR somewhere in the draft.

positives:
great hands,coordination and body control.Good blocker down field and will take his man out of the play. Can run thruogh arm tackles.
negatives:
tries to catch every thing with his body and does not use hand to get away from jams
overall:
might go up some draft boards due to 40 times but overall a #2 receiver at the Pro level

keep in mind that 40 times aren't everything for a receiver...remember anquan boldin...i would love to have that guy opposite andre...he ran like a 4.7 forty at the combine...it's all a matter of hands, seperation, and willingness to do what it takes to make the catch...speed is a by product of guys missing tackles

If they did I can't find it in the news section. Well a slot guy is going to be easier to find than a WCO #2 that is polished. I mean there are numbers guys all over the boards. But what you're talking about here is someone who can keep Walters at the #3 spot. But You got Higgnes, Figures, Davis....all little smurfs who can fly. Steve Smith might fall. Also could toy with the slash posiblities of Reevis if they took him for CB2.

Exactly what I was going to say about Walter. I'm not excited to see him as WR2, but he is a prototype WR3 to me. I think people sell him short because his production was limited by Carr's inability to make it past his second option.
If Schuab develops into a decent QB who can make it through his progression, Walter is all we need at WR3.
Good hands, good routes, knows where the marker is, and has the ability to find spots in the zone. I think he is a good guy to keep the chains moving.
Unless Kubiak has decided that Mathis has the ability to start, I agree that we will look for speed at the position.
Personally, I don't think Mathis will every develop into a starting WR, so we should look for someone in the draft.
