Second Wide Reciever = Tight End?

I know a lot of media outlets and fans think that the Texans are missing a 2nd WR yet don't you really think its more of a 3rd? Who is that 2nd WR?

Its Owen Daniels.

If you look at teams like Baltimore, Kansas City and even San Diego you will see that their TEs are normally used as the 2nd option if not the 1st.

So whats this big fuss over a number 2? Its actually a number 3 guys and we have 2 of those.
 
One thing is for sure, Owen Daniels fell to the perfect situation for his career.

And just think, this time last year we were arguing how we never used a tight end.

Look for the draft or June 1 cuts for the #2 reciever to be addressed.
 
well i think it's not so much that the TE is their 2nd receiver more than he's their second option in the passing game...those teams mentioned do not have a real solid receiving corp to begin with...baltimore does but mason is getting older and doesn't have his speed anymore and clayton was always more of a possession guy

can owen daniels succeed with more expected of him i believe so...maybe we'll find out this season

It's not so much about having good receivers or having a good tight end. It's about having good offensive weapons. In looking at the teams you mentioned, San Diego has LT and Kansas City has Larry Johnson. The Texans have no one even close to that caliber. Those other teams can afford to be below average at a receiver position since they're great at other positions. The Texans are great at one position (Johnson). They need more offensive weapons, and second receiver is where their weakness is most glaring.

And, Baltimore was not good on offense last year. I would aspire to be better than them.

baltimore was the 12th scoring offense during the regular season and the 11th overall passing offense throughout the season...bottom third of the league in rushing offensively...so baltimore wasn't that bad

what this team needs is more consistant plays from the offense...last year when our offense was out of the field you never know if we were going to see a sack party on carr...a bunch of screen passes...a bunch of runs up the middle...or a some intermidate passes that usually didn't hit their target...so our offense just needs to get more consistant...once our running game gets established then our offense can really take off...so we need big things this year from green, dayne, and leach
 
As mentioned earlier, it is not so much about a legit #2WR as much as creating several weapons more defensive players have to account for and create mismatches, instead of more pass rushing.

We have AJ now. He commands two defensive players to guard.

Green also is known for pass catching. He also acts as a premier blocking RB, which can not be understated as a good weapon to have. It will keep defenses guessing if he will run, pick up the blitz, screen option, or short yard pass on a given play.

Owen provides one more target. A nice one, since a speedy LB has to be used in coverage for him or he can find nice holes in zones. If Putzier and Owen are together they can create issues on a defense, since one will have a mismatch. I'm not saying Owens is Shannon Sharpe, but if you have a TE like Shannon then that is a #2 threat.

At goal line Leach is a threat as a reciever.

It does not take a probowl calibur WR. A possession type WR that gets you first downs and takes hits could be one option. Or one that can spread the defense down the field are both useful. They just have to grab 3-5 balls a game when the defense is overly focused on AJ or Owen or Green. An Ed McCaffrey type player would be ideal, esp because he was a fantastic blocking WR in the running game and took massive hits on key third and fourth down plays to move the chains.

I was going based on Matix post that he was a projected 4th rounder. I agree I don't think he will be there in the fourth and I would even be willing to take him should he be there for our 3rd round pick.
