This is just disregarding our future carr trade, so with what picks we have now.
1st: Amobi Okoye DT
3rd: Eric Weddle FS
4th: David Irons CB
5th: Rhema McKnight WR
6th: Daniel Sepulveda P
7th: Derek Landri DL
Kind of different from other people's mocks.... now my explanations:
1st: Amobi Okoye
Our biggest need is defensive tackle. We addressed the offensive tackle position with spencer returning and the signing of black along with winston having a year of experience under his belt plus salaam always a reliable backup. We do not need to reach on talent that isn't there, next season there is a lot more offensive tackle talent coming out, levi brown would be a second round pick in next years draft, why reach? Amobi Okoye doesn't have the size of alan branch, but he is way more athletic plus he will be the youngest player in the nfl, and at age 19, its scary, but he can gain weight and get bigger easier than any other player in the league. Him and Mario could be in a few years the two most feared d linemen in the league. This improves our rush defense, and he will become Demeco Ryans best friend. Ask Ray Lewis how much he enjoyed having his new young d tackle from last year in front of him. Our pass rush and rush defense was horrible, this helps us out in both areas. Our offense will be ok next season, its our defense that needs improvement.
3rd: Eric Weddle
We need someone at free safety other than CC Brown. Brown didn't have the awareness or athleticsm to be our free safety, weddle does. Safety is a bigger need than corner at this point. Faggins can play...he isn't horrible nad has showed flashes of becoming a good corner in this league.
4th: David Irons
Being in the SEC he has been battle tested and he will be able to come into camp and battle with faggins to be our #2 guy.
5th: Rhema Mcknight
Mcknight is one of the best athletes at the WR position. He played in a pass heavy offense and was able to complement Somardja and played well as the #2 guy. He has had some crazy catches and is a very hard worker. He also was tutored by a great offensive mind in Charlie Weis. I think he is a steal at this point in the draft. He also played a lot of slot as a junior when Stovall and Somardja were the #1 and #2 receivers, so he can do it all when it comes to WR.
6th: Daniel Sepulveda
He will be the top punter in the league, and in the 6th round I would rather a really good punter, than a player who probably will never play.
7th: Derek Landri
He has a lot of size and was the MVP of the best high school team in the nation (de la salle). He is a proven leader and has an incredible work ethic. I think if given a chance he might provide good depth on our defensive line. At best he might fill in for the underachieving Travis Johnson and at worse he will just be in there with Maddox and the other Johnson being depth
How this effects our lineup:
Offense
QB: Schaub, Rosenfels, Porter
HB: Green, Dayne, Taylor, Lundy, Gado
FB: Leach
WR: Andre Johnson Rhema Mcknight Kevin Walter Derrick Armstrong
TE: Daniels, Putzier, Bruener
LT: Spencer/Black Salaam
LG: Pitts
C: Flanagan Mckinney Hodgon
RG: Weary Mckinney
RT: Winston/Black Salaam
Schaub is our guy now and he will have time to learn with more help than Carr did, but still maybe not enough...but we are still testing a lot of guys out in the lineup. Our backfield looks the best it has ever looked coming into this season and our receiving corps looks weaker than last year, but has a lot of room to grow. We have a good returning FB and TE. Our offensive line has more depth than ever and has 3 proven starters, and one franchise left tackle coming off an injury. I didn't use many draft picks on the offense because one their wasn't much talent in the draft, and two our offense had players that had question marks, our defense didn't even have players who had question marks. Look for our 2008 draft bringing in a true #2 receiving option, a running back, or if our o line doesn't work out a center or left tackle
Defense
DE: MW / AW Derek Landri Babin
DT: Amobi Okoye, Travis Johnson, Anthony Maddox, Derek Landri, Thomas Johnson
MLB: Demeco Ryans
OLB: Greenwood Clark Barber Orr
CB: D-Rob, Faggins, Irons, Sanders
FS: Weddle, Brown
SS: Earl
K: Kris Brown
P: Daniel Sepuldeva
Anthony Weaver can now be a full time defensive end. Babin can come in as a pass specialist and Landri is unique because he provides depth at defensive tackle and defensive end. Our interior d line is now vastly improved with Travis Johnson coming back from injury, Amobi Okoye, and our free agents signed off the streets now participate in off season. This all improves our pass rush which will help out our defensive backfield. Our linebacking corps is better because our SLB is now much better. plus we have more depth and experience. Our d backs now have more young talent that can grow, we now have a better nickelback, and maybe a #2 option at corner, our safeties are improved and will play better due to our better pass rush. This draft kind of completes the framework for our defense for years to come. Look in the 2008 draft maybe another corner or a strongside linebacker.
with the extra pick that we receive with the carr trade (if there is a trade) then we draft another receiver higher...maybe a sidney rice or someone else. Next year drafts offensive tackle list is stacked, this years it isnt. O line as a whole is very weak in this draft.
