YFT Mock

This is just disregarding our future carr trade, so with what picks we have now.

1st: Amobi Okoye DT
3rd: Eric Weddle FS
4th: David Irons CB
5th: Rhema McKnight WR
6th: Daniel Sepulveda P
7th: Derek Landri DL

Kind of different from other people's mocks.... now my explanations:
1st: Amobi Okoye

Our biggest need is defensive tackle. We addressed the offensive tackle position with spencer returning and the signing of black along with winston having a year of experience under his belt plus salaam always a reliable backup. We do not need to reach on talent that isn't there, next season there is a lot more offensive tackle talent coming out, levi brown would be a second round pick in next years draft, why reach? Amobi Okoye doesn't have the size of alan branch, but he is way more athletic plus he will be the youngest player in the nfl, and at age 19, its scary, but he can gain weight and get bigger easier than any other player in the league. Him and Mario could be in a few years the two most feared d linemen in the league. This improves our rush defense, and he will become Demeco Ryans best friend. Ask Ray Lewis how much he enjoyed having his new young d tackle from last year in front of him. Our pass rush and rush defense was horrible, this helps us out in both areas. Our offense will be ok next season, its our defense that needs improvement.

3rd: Eric Weddle
We need someone at free safety other than CC Brown. Brown didn't have the awareness or athleticsm to be our free safety, weddle does. Safety is a bigger need than corner at this point. Faggins can play...he isn't horrible nad has showed flashes of becoming a good corner in this league.

4th: David Irons
Being in the SEC he has been battle tested and he will be able to come into camp and battle with faggins to be our #2 guy.

5th: Rhema Mcknight
Mcknight is one of the best athletes at the WR position. He played in a pass heavy offense and was able to complement Somardja and played well as the #2 guy. He has had some crazy catches and is a very hard worker. He also was tutored by a great offensive mind in Charlie Weis. I think he is a steal at this point in the draft. He also played a lot of slot as a junior when Stovall and Somardja were the #1 and #2 receivers, so he can do it all when it comes to WR.

6th: Daniel Sepulveda
He will be the top punter in the league, and in the 6th round I would rather a really good punter, than a player who probably will never play.

7th: Derek Landri
He has a lot of size and was the MVP of the best high school team in the nation (de la salle). He is a proven leader and has an incredible work ethic. I think if given a chance he might provide good depth on our defensive line. At best he might fill in for the underachieving Travis Johnson and at worse he will just be in there with Maddox and the other Johnson being depth

How this effects our lineup:
Offense
QB: Schaub, Rosenfels, Porter
HB: Green, Dayne, Taylor, Lundy, Gado
FB: Leach
WR: Andre Johnson Rhema Mcknight Kevin Walter Derrick Armstrong
TE: Daniels, Putzier, Bruener
LT: Spencer/Black Salaam
LG: Pitts
C: Flanagan Mckinney Hodgon
RG: Weary Mckinney
RT: Winston/Black Salaam

Schaub is our guy now and he will have time to learn with more help than Carr did, but still maybe not enough...but we are still testing a lot of guys out in the lineup. Our backfield looks the best it has ever looked coming into this season and our receiving corps looks weaker than last year, but has a lot of room to grow. We have a good returning FB and TE. Our offensive line has more depth than ever and has 3 proven starters, and one franchise left tackle coming off an injury. I didn't use many draft picks on the offense because one their wasn't much talent in the draft, and two our offense had players that had question marks, our defense didn't even have players who had question marks. Look for our 2008 draft bringing in a true #2 receiving option, a running back, or if our o line doesn't work out a center or left tackle

Defense
DE: MW / AW Derek Landri Babin
DT: Amobi Okoye, Travis Johnson, Anthony Maddox, Derek Landri, Thomas Johnson
MLB: Demeco Ryans
OLB: Greenwood Clark Barber Orr
CB: D-Rob, Faggins, Irons, Sanders
FS: Weddle, Brown
SS: Earl

K: Kris Brown
P: Daniel Sepuldeva

Anthony Weaver can now be a full time defensive end. Babin can come in as a pass specialist and Landri is unique because he provides depth at defensive tackle and defensive end. Our interior d line is now vastly improved with Travis Johnson coming back from injury, Amobi Okoye, and our free agents signed off the streets now participate in off season. This all improves our pass rush which will help out our defensive backfield. Our linebacking corps is better because our SLB is now much better. plus we have more depth and experience. Our d backs now have more young talent that can grow, we now have a better nickelback, and maybe a #2 option at corner, our safeties are improved and will play better due to our better pass rush. This draft kind of completes the framework for our defense for years to come. Look in the 2008 draft maybe another corner or a strongside linebacker.

with the extra pick that we receive with the carr trade (if there is a trade) then we draft another receiver higher...maybe a sidney rice or someone else. Next year drafts offensive tackle list is stacked, this years it isnt. O line as a whole is very weak in this draft.

Our biggest need is defensive tackle.

No. I know a lot of people are high on Okoye, but this is not a true statment. DTs are more responsible for stopping the run than for rushing the passer. It's nice if you have a DT that can do both, but to say that DT is our biggest need is a vast overstatement. We were middle of the league last year at stopping the run and got good production from our DTs last year. Not to mention that Weaver and Kalu often slide inside on passing downs, making them part time DTs as well. We may not have Pro Bowlers at DT, but they are serviceable and we have some depth there. Our DBs, however, are a much different story. Faggins is a good nickel corner, but should not be expected to lock down one side of the field. Brown and Earl are both SS that could provide decent run support but are liabilities in coverage. The depth here is also lacking. Our defensive backfield is in far more disarray than our front line.

you have a good point with that, but I do not think Landry will be available at 10, and I think nelson will be way to big of a reach at 10. Landry can become a good safety, but I think Weddle is barely a notch lower than nelson, and we can get weddle in the 3rd round. If Landry is available however, than I would pick him up over okoye.

I doubt Irons falls to the 4th but if he does we would be fools not to take him.

Weddle in the 3rd is way more favorable to me than Nelson in the 1st, I have to agree with yourfavoritetexan42 on that one.

i have a hard time believing the team won't take an offensive lineman anywhere, much less on the first day like they should.

other than that, you beefed up the d-line and drafted reinforcements for the WR and secondary. it's really hard to fill all the holes in one draft.

Mc Knight is terrible. I am a big ND fan and have seen him play quite a bit. He has poor hands.

That's a pretty bad pick YTF. I excpect more form you. If you're drafting the guy to sell seats fine. You're drafting him to be a front line free safty...it's a reach.

Eric Weddle DB Weddle (5-11, 200) stood on his 40 times from the NFL Scouting Combine. He also had a 35-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-6 broad jump. 4.48 forty

Here ya go here's ten guys better.

Josh Gattis CB Gattis (6-1 1/8, 211 pounds) ran his 40s in 4.47 and 4.50. He also had a 35-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-4 long jump, 4.35 short shuttle, 6.99 three-cone drill and 22 bench presses.

Rashad Barksdale DB Barksdale (5-11 5/8, 208 pounds) ran his 40s in 4.46 and 4.49. He also had a 34 ½-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-7 long jump and 14 bench presses.

Daren Stone S Stone (6-3 ¼, 220 pounds) ran his 40s in 4.47 and 4.56. He also had a 39 ½-inch vertical jump, 11-foot-5 long jump and 15 bench presses. He stood on his short shuttle and three-cone times from the Combine.

Charles Manigo FS Manigo (6-1 ½, 211 pounds) ran his 40s in 4.53 and 4.54. He also had a 42-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-9 long jump, 4.41 short shuttle, 7.10 three-cone drill and 9 bench presses.

Usama Young CB Young (5-11, 196) ran the 40 in 4.39 and 4.40 seconds. He also notched a 43-inch vertical, a 10-foot-11 broad, a 4.31 short shuttle, a 6.65 three-cone drill and 15 bench presses.

Joseph Porter CB Porter (5-10 ¼, 198) ran the 40 in 4.35 and 4.33 seconds. He also had a 36-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-3 broad jump, a 4.23 short shuttle, a 6.62 three-cone drill and 21 bench presses.

Andrew Shanle S Shanle (6-1, 212) ran both of his 40s in 4.40, the short shuttle in 4.09 and the three-cone drill in 6.80. He also had a 38½-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-11 broad jump and 16 lifts.

David Lofton S Lofton (6-3¾, 212 pounds), the son of Hall of Famer James Lofton, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.48 and 4.48. He also had a 38½ vertical jump, 10-foot-5 long jump, 4.18 short shuttle, 6.80 three-cone drill and 20 strength lifts.

Eric Wright DB Wright (5-10 5/8, 192) stood on all the marks he posted during the Combine (40s in 4.36 and 4.37; short shuttle in 4.23; three-cone drill in 6.93; 36½-inch vertical jump; 10-foot-3 broad jump; 17 lifts). He did only drills on campus, and the scouts say he was absolutely fantastic. Wright did have off-field problems when he attended Southern California that prompted him to transfer to UNLV.

Courtney Brown DB The Cal-Poly SLO product worked out at San Jose as part of their pro day and he really stood out with eye-popping numbers. He originally started school there as a wide receiver and was moved to DB in 2004. Brown (6-1 3/8, 200) ran two 40s, notching a 4.35 and 4.32. He had a vertical jump of 41 ½ inches, a 10-foot-11 broad jump, a 4.07 short shuttle, a 7.10 three-cone and 15 bench presses.

Melvin Bullitt S Bullitt (6-1¼, 201 pounds) ran 4.50 and 4.48 in the 40-yard dash. He also had a 40½-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-5 broad jump, 15 strength lifts, 3.97 in the short shuttle and 6.90 in the three-cone drill.

Weddle doesn't run preticularly well. He doesn't lift well. And he doesn't jump very well. He's a good guy. A great college football palyer, but your leaving a lot of stuff in the barn by taking him in the thrid over the better atheletes with greater upside. The Wyoming kid Weldling for expample, is bigger, just as fast, jumps better and is smarter. By passing a bunch of sub 4.4 guys on the board to get to him is all I know.

I personally run a 4.51 forty. I am nowhere near a college player, let alone nfl player. Huge difference between game speed and 40 time speed. If you watch game film, it seems like this kid is the leader of the defense, and he week in and week out is making big plays for them to win the game, if it is on special teams or defense. I am not the only one who thinks this, Bellichik has been very interested in this kid as well, and he slowly is moving up the charts, he might be a first round pick.

I think Weddle is more of a SS than A FS. He might even play CB(look what he did against CJ in the emerald bowl). Nice effort!

I watched him four games. You're looking for a slash to cover FS and get the girls all gooey at the carity events, he's you're guy. You're looking for a front line speedy FS...I think the NFL is going to eat this guy alive...just like CC Brown.
