Need an answer... Are the Texans illiterate?

I just want a few opinions on what you guys think is happening to us? I know the D needs to tighten up but then again we seem to get a pick-off or fumble a game so is it really that bad? Everyone says the O-line; which does need correction, but when it comes down to it, by the time we get done picking apart both sides of the ball the whole message board will have created a whole new team! We have so much talent, we are just using it wrong.
So my question is this. Game to game I thought I happened to notice something. Houston can't read defense or have a gameplan as to what plays to call and when (situational or specific to downs). I watch these guys every week and they seem to have a "let's try it", approach to the game. We ask to get our TE in the game, dump off's and screens to Davis, deep passes to a well know threat in Andre (who will most likely be double covered), and that's what we get each time... one or the other. Instead of mixing all of these things up every game, or reading the D and picking them apart, it seems we decide on one approach and stick to it the whole game, every game. What do you guys think? Is that about right? One approach etched in stone a game, not knowing how to read D to move the ball? or is it something else?

That's what it is! They're illiterate and they never read the playbook. We need a literacy coach.

I think it all comes down to:

1) MORE SACKS
2) BETTER PASS PROTECTION
3) better TE (Joppru?) and maybe starting RB

All that other stuff you said is how it looks because we cannot execute. We can get interceptions and we can run well against zone pass coverages, but we're just taking what their D gives us and our D is just letting them drive, until they make a mistake, which our DBs are very good at sniffing out.

I would agree that we sometimes insist on running, at least part of the time, when our running game is terrible. Sometimes it is and sometimes it's not. Every coach is going to insist on running at LEAST a third of the time or so, so we better get a solid, consistent running game.

In many cases interceptions are dependent on the opponents offense making a mistake. The QB throws a ball and doesn't see the defender lurking nearby or under/over throws the pass. Sometimes a reciever slips and falls. Sure the defense also gets some of the credit for interceptions and I don't mean to make out like they're just benefitting from blind luck or anything like that.

When you see the Texans giving up 3rd down conversion after 3rd down conversion this is indicative of what they are. This is showing you the lack of consistency that they're sufferring from. Ending drives in turnovers is a good thing but most teams (particularly most good teams) aren't going to give you a mistake you can exploit for a turnover on most drives.

The Texans need to stop more drives by forcing punts. The turnovers are nice, great even, but they've got to be able to lock a team down and keep them from getting that next ten yards if they want to win games.

YES ! When our defense starts doing this we will be contending for and making the playoffs and you can forget all the "stuff" that is spewed forth here about the offense. That will take care of itself.

Hey guys most of you are right, but its not that our team is illiterate....its just simply that coach Capers has a more conservative style of coaching, than most other coaches and well.....as you guys can see we are out of the picture for this year. What we should do is sort of like experiment on this last three games. How about instead of being the conservative team that we are, how about we go out there and just play some good old smashmouth football. Let Dominick Davis pound it in there like a runaway train until they have to focus on the line of scrimmage, and just at that point unleash a frightening airal attack by hitting not just Andre, but also Gaffney, Bradford, Armstrong, and last but not least, Miller. Sounds like poetry right, oh well......just some wishful thinking.

Maybe that's possible against Chicago, but I doubt it will be that great. DD is not pounding "it in there like a runaway train" against zone pass coverages. He's not going to do much of anything against man coverage. Other teams are and will probably continue to use zone pass coverages against us and DD will (maybe) continue to rush for 100 or more yds. per game. They don't care. Well, the teams with a good offense don't. DD is looking good, when he should be looking incredible. Why we can't EVER pass against zone coverages is mostly because our line can't even protect car against a 4 man rush. We just get beat at the line on both sides of the ball and skills players cannot make up for that. Not enough, anyway.

Our next 3 opponents will be easier than the way things have been the last 6 or 7 weeks, for the most part. We will look better, but probably not enough to really prove anything. I just hope we win 2 out of 3, because I'm not counting on it.

I didn't mean it that way I just meant, can David or "staff" read defense for play calling. I was saying they don't seem to react to defensive sets, coverages, and schemes too well game to game. Like what to do against Cover 2, or if this CB is man, this LB drops back, this Safety comes up I/We should do this, throw here, or call that. I was saying they don't make changes during/in game, but before games and leave things do be just that and not adapt. :)

You will hate me for this, but its a reflection of a coach who can not think on his feet. He can not deviate from his plan and that's why he's constantly taking notes on why things didn't work, instead of focusing on the game at hand. Again, I had a brilliant Accounting Professor in College who could simply not adapt in front of people if something went wrong with his presentation. When he could write and review he was absolutely brilliant and seldom wrong. I have seen many people who are this way and that's one of the reasons I believe we need a new head coach. Everything Capers does has a precise order and if it doesn't go that way he's lost. At least that's the way it appears to me. That is no reflection on the man personally that's just the way I believe he thinks and works. We had a basket ball coach by the name of Ed Gregory at Fresno State who later worked with the SF Warriors and the likes. He had the same problem and was replaced by a man by the name of Boyd Grant. He became quiet famous at Fresno State. Boyd was an excellent game general, but I suspect tactically speaking Ed was sharper. But Ed was not a good game general. Capers is an excellent tactition and knows how to design defenses, but he's not a general.

DD is looking good, when he should be looking incredible.

i forgot when we drafted DD, in the 4th round, casserly proudly announced to the public that he was an earl campell incarnate.... :hmmm:

I-bar, I suspect that you have hit the nail on the head with your assesment of Dom. With his peronality type and what appears to be a lack of an ability to think on his feet spells out a problem as a head coach. Probably a great D-coach, but not a great Head Coach. Nothing against him, just how life works sometimes. To borrow a line from a movie "A man needs to k now his limitations".

The Texans have to be more flexible on offense, and they need to act instead of react. In the immortal words of Bruce Lee " You must be like water. For water itself has no shape and can adapt to anything. If you put it in a cup, it becomes the cup. If you put it in a bowl, it becomes the bowl. And only when you act do you get positive results".

God!
Family!
Country!
Texans!
