NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair will miss the final three games of the season and undergo surgery to strengthen the bruised sternum that has plagued him most of the year.

Coach Jeff Fisher said they reached the decision Friday morning.

Fisher said a chief consideration is that McNair, the NFL's co-MVP last season, will need the surgery even if he never plays football again to fix the damage caused by three injuries to his sternum.

``Basically, Steve does not have a solid bony surface throughout the length of his sternum,'' Fisher said.

``There's an area in there that's cartilage. It's not normal. He was born that way. And because of this area that's simply cartilage, when Steve suffered the first injury back in 2000, the sternum itself moved, creating a lot of pain and a lot of discomfort.''

I'm so tired of hearing about his injuries. I'm not being sarcastic. I mean I feel bad for the guy. He keeps playing through all those injuries and keeps getting hurt again and again. I think if I were him I would seriously consider retirement. Wouldn't be a bad thing for the Texans either. :hmmm:

I don't know about that the way Volek played last Monday night from what I saw anyway, I didn't watch the whole game.

I have thought for a long time that McNair was one of the toughest guys to ever play in the NFL.

BUENO!
Yeah, I remember back in 99' when the Titans had to give McNair that trachyotomy at his own 30 yard line with 13 seconds left to play against the Raiders for a chance to get in the playoffs.

McNair was like "Cut me Mickey!" except that it didn't really come out like that since he couldn't breath with the crushed windpipe and deflated lung. They got the message though (but never figured out why Steve was calling Brad Hopkins "Mickey") and using one of those plastic PaperMate pens they borrowed from an official they punched him a little air hole to breath through, blew some air into his chest to get that one lung back up to snuff, and he was good to go!

He got up on his broken right leg, clutching his broken throwing hand, and was led to the line of scrimmage (since he'd been temporarily blinded on the previous play) and still threw two touchdown passes (and ran for another!) to win the game.

The guy's a warrior!

Wow ......... How did they sterilize the PaperMate pen out on the football field? He's almost as tough as Byron Leftwich. :sbad:

Are you kidding me? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Almost as tough as Byron Leftwich my ***! Leftwich was made from a piece of McNair's knee that was stolen from the medical cart back in 1998 when his leg was torn off and then sewn back on in the locker room during halftime. That little piece of knee skin was taken to a secret cloning facility run by the Jacksonville Jaguars who then used to it create a genetic "retro-virus" of sorts. They then located a young QB named Byron Leftwich and injected him with it in place of his usual flu shot. All they had to do then was wait till he popped up in the draft.

Leftwich is still a few years away from being full strength. This first, early version of the McNair Formula takes years to fully bond with it's host. Even now they're working on perfecting it to get the time from injection to full invulnerability down to less than 6 months.

When Leftwich reaches his full power he'll still only have 35% of Steve McNair's mutant defenses. Had they cranked it up anymore Byron might not have survived the process.

And the PaperMate pen was wiped across Bruce Matthews armpit several times, which everyone in the huddle agreed would easily kill any germs or foreign matter that might be on the pen. It didn't matter anyway since McNair's immune system can handle any organism known to man but it was a nice thought.
