wow, this is actually quite sickening.

raheem orr is shantee orr, i think he switched names or something but he's the same one.

i too see domanick good as gone, and seth payne was released.

that's like 21 players by my counting that we still have from our drafts. and something like 30 that aren't here anymore...that's just plain bad scouting, draft selecting, trading, coaching, and any combination of them.

Is it just me or was that 2003 draft look completly horrible now. At least Andre will be a Texan for life...the only player we can say that about...hopefully mario and demeco follow in his footsteps!

6th round to milford brown-playing for arizona

I understand what you are saying but how is this statement fair to the current management. The former management was sorry and was replaced. Kub and Rick Smith have done a great job last year, and I have faith in them this year.

I am not blaming the current regime, it is just an fWIW kinda thing to look at and see what happened to this franchise...the sickening part is this team has been building and building and looking at how many guys we drafted didn't even play in the NFL in 2006 ...I mean the talent level the Texans had and we couldn't even get our own draft picks to stay here either starting or depth and they couldn't.Now I understand when someone is in the 6th round or 7th round, the odds aren't good but there are a bunch of 1st day picks...that is horrible drafting on the Texans over the years

Raheem Orr is outa school somewhere on the east coast. He was a DT. Shantee Orr was a DE from Michigan.

They are 2 different people. No name change

http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/493023 <-----Raheem Orr
http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/396874 <-------Shantee Orr

i see, we drafted raheem orr in 2004.

Shantee Orr was an undrafted free agent signe by non other than the Green Bay Packers in 2003, we later claimed him on waivers a few months later.

The average career in the NFL is slightly more or slightly less than three years I think - I can't remember exactly. That would lead one to believe that there are a lot of teams that don't keep many players. Probably not to the extent of the Texans though.

It would be interesting to see this done for all other teams around the league to put the Texans numbers in context.

Volunteers?

You saved med the trouble of asking the question. In order to 'rate' our former GM/HC, we should compare them to the draft choices of other teams. Instead of someone from these boards doing the work, perhaps some fans from other teams would be willing to do this for their respective teams. A NFL-wide fan-investigation and comparison of GMs/HCs draft choices? :)

I would have add the FA that we signed over the years but then I think this thread would have been turned into an x-rated thread

The case could be made that this thread is X rated NOW. That was awful reading!!!!

wow, this is actually quite sickening.

Most of these drafts were sickening on draft day while they were occurring. Anyone who thought so at the time was criticized. I read a lot of "If you're so much smarter than Charley Casserly then why aren't you the GM?" posts.

As it turns out a chimp with a dartboard would have been smarter than Casserly. We need to get over this "the experts are smarter than we are" mentality. That's not necessarily true.

The "GMs are privy to more information than we are" card is overplayed too. Why did everyone on the Raiders messageboard know what a crappy player P-Burn was when "the expert" didn't?

We all have 2 eyes. Trust them.

While not altogether surprising (something had to go wrong for us to suck so bad over the last three years), it is sobering to see just how badly the Texans braintrust did in selecting and developing talent.

I take the view that a day one pick should yield a solid starter....especially on a team with as little talent and as many holes as we've got. Obviously there will be some misses and busts, but they better be very few and far between in a building process.

After five years of drafting, we should have between 10-12 solid starters if the drafters have any clue.

There should be some depth/backups & the occasional starter that comes from day two. That obviously hasn't been the case with our organization as well.

Last year was a step in the right direction (potential mis-step with Williams) aside). We've potentially got four starters in day one depending on how Spencer's injury works out. Another good three first picks this year and maybe we can begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel and it won't be a train.

Go Texans

I was suprised to find out Wells didn't go any where (my dad told me a few weeks ago). He could have been a good back up some where.

I am truly not surprised by this because the fans on these message boards have contact with one another, and if someone is wrong they are told that by other people. After a while we have a better view of the player than the FO does. The FO only has a minimal ammount of scouts, and they can't see every game for every player. IMO the CC an Capers teams' scouts were often just 'yes men'. The fans have contacts to everywhere, so in essence they have more information available to them than the "experts".

Look at Kubes draft and look at CC's.

Exactly...looks like night and day.

which gets me excited of what they are going to do in this year's draft.

Last year's draft is the best one so far because a majority of the rookies contirbuted in some way last season.

We can only hope that this draft will also produce positive results.:texflag:

Factor that and the fact that Rick Smith will be involved with this years draft and it doesn't look near as bleak as drafts past.

Our bad luck with players started right out of the box....Tony Boselli.

Too much. It's so easy to throw a rock. I really think that some of us, forget we are posting on a free message board. Meaning, that most posts here are worth the ink and paper there written on. Think of the times where posters here won't even read threads on a post. As they aren't worth the read. The true worth found here, is when a poster get's a TY for a well written post, or information that is correct and shared with the board. One last thought, good humor is worth sharing.

Great point! This is the most logical post that I have read all day. Great work keep it up! :victory:

what makes this board so unique is past performance effects every topic. the skeptic view cites past failure with an air of fear for the future, the optimist has this same fear but hopes for the future. leads to heated debate and some really LONG threads hehe. I love it and hate it! GO TEXANS!

Guilty as charged. :embarrass :thud:

And I can't blame :drunk:.. I don't drink.

I was suprised to find out Wells didn't go any where (my dad told me a few weeks ago). He could have been a good back up some where.

I think that in the long run Jonathan Wells is a very average RB. He's good for right around 1,000 yards a season but then there are a ton of guys (many of whom are not working in football right now) who can get you a thousand yards in 16 games. His one real chance to stand out was on special teams and he became a very good special teams player in his last couple of years.

He stood out (which is why many of us wonder why he didn't stick somewhere) but at RB that's just not enough. RB's need to be more than just good special teams players. As Vinny said in another thread you don't stock up on RB's for the future. You stock up on running backs for right now. Jonathan isn't a starter quality RB but that's nothing to be ashamed of. At any given time there are only 32 starting RB's in the NFL.

He's a backup quality RB but there are apparently 32 other backup RB's in the NFL who their respective teams think are better than Wells or at least equal to him. Nobody is going to grab him off the street to replace a guy they think is the exact same player Wells is.

That leaves 3rd string where teams do what little "stashing for the future" that they can afford to do at this position. That player either has to have big upside or at least be a good RB with very good to excellent special teams skills.

Wells will be in camp with somebody this year I'm sure.

It's ALL, and I mean ALL of it is David Carrs fault!

Well Bill as soon as you laid the lure in the water I knew it was only a matter of time before some snapperhead would rise and take the bait.

Well I believe the three year rule is spot on for players life expectancy in the NFL. And I've got the other one, I beleive it to be true, but never researched it...First round guy is 80% likly not to be a bust. Second round guy 75% likly not to bust. Third round guy 60% likely. Fourth rounders 40%. Fifth rounders 20 %, sixth rounders ten percent and seventh rounders 5%. Hit on anything in day two in the draft, your scouts have earned their oats. I think the 2002 and 2003 drafts were in themselves a bit lean. We have a good class this year. They miss it will be because the tallent & need was evaluated wrong.

Based on what you are saying, we were either really lucky or really bad at scouting.

Based on what you are saying, we were either really lucky or really bad at scouting.

What I think is, the NFL didn't want another Carolina situation here in 2000 when they voted on the compensation we recieved. That coupled with with a bad epansion draft and two weak classes back to back...the end result of which was a coach and GM tring to hit a home run with a sixteen foot two by four. Every time they reached they were just diging further in the wrong direction. Been one thing if they held their water and moved down and gathered picks one year. Instead they always felt they were just a couple of peices away from making a positive run.

Soon as they anouced 3-4 to the 4-3 , and ZBS after the hirings last year we should of seen the writting on the wall. You start switching schemes , it's going to take a couple of drafts to get their players gathered to make the jump. Changing one is difficlut. Changing both is just about hopeless. Seeing Vonte Leech skipping off to the great white way is a function of that impatience. We ain't got the money to match even if they wanted to.

Wells didn't make an NFL roster in '06 (while healthy). Why would he make one in '07?

He was a marginal NFL back from the get-go and he's likely done.

I thought so too (and AJ's post is right also) ..he had the body of Eddie George yet didn't run like him

At least Wells didn't turn out like Clarette (however you spell it)
