Looking at our roster and looking back before last year's draft, we are pretty talent deficient. That much is pretty blantantly obvious. While the offseason signings are nice so far we're looking at good depth free agents (with the exception of Green), something we've never had before. But it's said before and proven before good teams are built through the draft.
While Charles Johnson, Joe Thomas and Adrian Peterson would all look great in steel blue, the problem is cost. While i'm not sure what a team would ask i'm sure there'd be at least a day one pick in the fold at least. This team needs starters right now, a foundation to build on, and we've got a lot of holes to fill and playing people who just aren't starters around the league.
Yeah star players are great don't get me wrong, but a team of star palyers doesn't always make the playoffs. See Washington Redskins. We have three players of that cailber right now and one of them developing in Mario Williams. Some stars come straight out of the draft, while others emerge battle tested. They will come.
In the meantime looking at what you are willing to give up to get AP, CJ, or JT....could set this franchise back prohibitvely longer. Do you really expect one player to come in and set this franchise on fire? Sure it will help at first. But as the season wears on we're rolling the dice on a lot. I guess what i am getting at....how can you justify moving up for the short term while shooting ourselves in the foot longtern once again.
