Joe Staley Impresses at Pro Day

"All 32-teams, including the offensive line coaches from eleven different franchises, descended upon Central Michigan University this morning for the Chippewas pro-day. The early returns are in and the prospect they came to see did not disappoint.

Offensive tackle Joe Staley was the star of the show.

Weighing in at 304-pounds, Staley's forty-times ranged between 4.79-and-4.82 seconds. His times in the short-shuttle and 3-cone were 4.30 and 7.17-seconds respectively. Staley then marked 32-inches in the vertical jump and 9-feet-4-inches in the broad.

He looked outstanding in position drills. Staley did not participate in the bench press today, standing on the 27 repetitions he completed at the combine.

Several coaches on hand stated it was one of the best workouts by an offensive lineman they had ever witnessed. One coach claimed Staley "made millions for himself today" after the workout was complete.

The Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions all sent offensive line coaches to specifically watch Staley.

So to did the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots. All three of these teams have set up dates to individually workout Staley.

While the other numbers from the workout have been slow coming in, sources on the scene have told us defensive end Dan Bazuin, who turned in a terrible performance at the combine, looked good today. He was faster and looked fluid during drills."

Texans not there ? Or should I say conspicuosly not there ?
In other words, are they a little too low-key about a player they've got
to be very interested in given their need at OLT ?
Everyone was expecting a good workout, but appears it exceeded the most
optimistic expectations ?
I was looking at comparisons between 2007 Draft candidates and players already in the NFL, and the guy they compared Staley to was Eric Winston. That's not all bad for sure ?
I dunno, but could this guy replace Levi Brown as the #2 OT to be drafted next month ?

Sounds like wishful thinking.

Interesting and surprising that the Texans were not more visible.

Maybe they know he is going to be gone before we could have a shot at him in the 2nd but I would think we would be just as active in our due dillegence regarding him as anyone else in case a drop back offer surfaces.

I'm not sure that Brown is that much better than Staley but unlike the last bunch we had that apparently knew nothing about big uglies on either side of the ball, Kubiak/Smith do.

I don't know about replacing Levi Brown but vaulted perhaps into the first round or solidified at least as a high second round pick. Someone looking for line help might take him instead of Kalil now... :D

Maybe Kubiak/Smith figures he can call up Denver's scouts and save the trip.

I'd agree with that :)

from watching game film of Staley he looked more like a natural zbs LG not a T on the NFL level, but I could be wrong :pigfly:

Remember the report about the Lions not being at Quinns Pro-day...

Don't believe everything you hear, especially since members of the orginization aren't neccessarily out there watching prospects with Texan hats and red and white outfits.

From what I understand Staley had a solid senior bowl too. This is who I'd like to see us take in the second, but he probably won't be around for us now.

Well no duh he was the star of the show, who else are you going to watch at Central Michigan's Pro Day?

Sure, he looks good in shorts and a T-Shirt, but when I saw him at the Senior Bowl, he looked awful. He couldn't get the pass protection scheme down and he was beat off the snap of the ball almost every play. He showed he came from a small school and wasn't used to playing against top notch talent. You can rant and rave all you want about this guy after his Pro-Day, but the tapes don't lie and the tapes show a tackle who will need some experience and coaching before he will ever make a difference.

He shouldn't be more than a 3rd round pick in my opinion. But thats just me.

he ran impressively that's for sure...27 reps is about par for what a tackle should be able to do...overall i think he's a 2nd round pick talent-wise...he would a smart choice for us...but with jordon black he isn't a need anymore

I think that that you are still looking at the same area you have been for months. The latter part of the first round to the early part of the second.

dan bazuin. he looked good.

Yeah, you beat me to the post just because you were awake first.

Bazuin is the better talent IMO. He is better than Babin, and there is no talk of him switching to 3-4 OLB as a "tweener." Bazuin is a straight up pass rushing DE.

Texans not there ? Or should I say conspicuosly not there ?

The article stated that all 32 teams were represented, but that only 11 sent their OL coach to watch Staley. The Texans had representatives there. I also am hoping they were paying attention to Bazuin. If he falls to the second day he would be worth consideration.
