2 Ideas on how to fill 7 holes

IMO the Texans have too many holes to fill in just one more draft/FA period but we can knock them down to size with some form of the following moves.

The ideas are based on the assumption that we will help the team by taking the following in the upcoming draft:

2 OL (one OT, one C/G)
1 FS
1 CB
1 QB
1 WR
1 DT
* and a FA punter

Just for fun, here are two ways to get that done assuming we stay where we are in the draft.

1st = OLT Brown or FS Landry
2nd = WR Davis or OLT Staley
3rd = QB Kolb and QB Kolb
4th = C Mozes and C Mozes
5th = FS White or CB Gaddis
6th = DT Toeaina and DT Toeaina
7th = CB Barksdale or WR McClellan

Go Texans! :elmo:

I like the Dan Mozes pick. I thin khe is going to be really good in the NFL. He is one of the more steady prospects at Center this year. And I would say that if he falls to the 4th which is possible, that I would be happy to have him. I would take him in the 3rd even.

That's a nice breakdown. Personally, I'd also put OLB as a priority in the list, and I might take away QB, as I don't think Carr's going anywhere. If Stanton or Kolb fell far enough, though, maybe I'd grab them (i.e. Kolb in the 4th, but not 3rd).

The problem, though, is that lower-round draft picks are unlikely to fill holes. If they even make the team, they're usually going to be just average, and probably not that much better than what we have. Maybe we get lucky and get a significant upgrade, but not likely.

So, for that reason, I think only the first 3 rounds should be considered as really options for filling holes. The 4th and 5th rounders might be for depth (which we can use anywhere) or players that might need some development time (but don't count on them to fill holes). I'd use the 6th and (especially) 7th round picks to draft special teams or high risk players that we'd like to make sure we get first shot at trying out.

With that, what I'd personally like to see us get in the first three rounds:
- Someone for the secondary (FS or CB)
- An OL (C or LT)
- An OLB
In the 4th/5th, I'd go for:
- Another OL
- A defensive player (either DT, CB, or FS)
In the 6th/7th, I'd go for:
- A potential WR who can return
- A punter

That seems to match pretty well with your second list (except I'd like an OLB instead of a QB).

I know what you mean. Perhaps "fill" is overstated but what I mean is upgrade 7 positions (including depth) which I do think is possible if Smith does a great job.

OT - the hole was filled by Black - maybe not what we want it to be but we have a "body" to fill the hole. By signing Black, the team isn't "forced into taking an OT. But, if they can get a good player at that position, the fact that they signed Black will not hinder them from doing so.

DT/DE/LB/WR - same thing.
RB - I think it is the same - but Ahman's signing would discourage filling that position more than the others.

Will they probably still aim at those positions in the draft? Yes, if they have a choice and the talent is comparable. If they start reaching to fill needs, I will be very disheartened - but form their approach to FA, I doubt that will be the case.

So, I agree those are STILL our biggest needs, but the "small" signings at least gives us NFL bodies for those holes. Which means go BPA with very little regard to position (there is always a little).
