Todd McShay's Rounds 1-3 for the Texans

Navy_Chris

Rookie
Todd McShay, Director of Scouting for Scouts, Inc., appeared on ESPNEWS' Football Friday a few nights ago and listed these 3 players as those the Texans would take in the first 3 rounds:

Round 1 - Levi Brown, OT, Penn State
Round 2 - Eric Wright, CB, UNLV
Round 3 - Jason Hill, WR, Washington State

I would be seriously disappointed if we drafted Brown or Wright. I wouldn't mind seeing Jason Hill come to us in Round 3 though.

Thoughts?

I'd be happy for sure. The only thing that would be better in my mind is if they move up and go get Joe Thomas. OLT just isn't a need. It's a five year old need. It isn't sexy but it works. You build a football club from the inside out, with more than fifth round prospects. With this draft board you're still going to get top end tallent to more than shore up FS, CB and LB. I've always felt that Leron was over kill at Free safty at the eight.

I have never said this, but I've been a fan of moving up to get Calvin Johnson in the 1st and taking Reggie Nelson in the 2nd if he falls that far. If he's gone, I would take Justin Blalock in the 2nd, and maybe Satele in the 3rd.

I don't want us to move up at all. BUT if we did...AP, JT, or THE MAN (CJ) would be sweet. Johnson is "kind of a big deal"

I don't think Nelson will be there in the 2nd. after his combine...it looked as though he could miraculously slip...but he ran a 4.35 i believe at his pro day and did pretty well in the other drills as well. he has improved his stock a great deal and should easily be the 2nd safety taken.

I dont think we need to reach for Brown at 8 when we can get a guy like Joe Staley in the 2nd who imo isn't that much of a dropoff from Brown if any.

The guard position seems to get overlooked here, too. Sure we have Pitts, Weary and McKinney, but we need to get some young guys in there behind them. Blalock and Beekman will be available for us to snatch.

Im personally hoping we can steal Kalil to shore up our C position in the 2nd.

That would be good too. Samson Satele should be the 2nd center taken. If we land Satele sometime in the 3rd round, that'd be great too. I've heard rumors of Kalil now being a late first rounder.

that was of....last week. funny how they all are catching onto Eric Wright, Jason Hill is a decent receiver too. what you are missing however is the drop off after Levi Brown to Joe Staley. there really is no comparison. Levi you could plug in from day one Staley, who knows? could be a stop gap, could be a starter in a couple years you just don't know for sure, so you take the sure thing Levi Brown.

while I still think he could be an option @ #8 the Texans will opt to travel another path, as I've stated before Quinn & Peterson are locks to go early, combine them with Russell, Thomas & Johnson that leaves the distinct possiblity of a trade or something unusual happening to throw all the mocks off course. someone really good is going to be sitting there for the Texans to select @ #8 (if the Texans themselves wait).

I don't think the Texans will go for Brown at #8. If they decide they want him they may try to trade down, but I think that is unlikely now that we signed Jordan Black. My thinking now is they will try to go for BPA at #8 which will probably be Landry or maybe Okoye, if Landry is gone.

They may go for OL in the 2nd round though, and try to get Staley, Ugoh, or Kalil. IMO all 3 of these would be a better fit for the ZB system than Brown who seems to be too slow.

Round 3 is where I think they will try to get their QB, Stanton or Kolb, unless they think they will be gone by then and use the 2nd rd. pick instead. If they use the 2nd rd. pick on QB, then they could go WR in the 3rd and maybe try to get Harris, OT, or Alleman, OG, in the 4th. I know the Texans talked to both of them at the Combine. JMHO!

I would have absolutely no problems if the first fell out like this, except I might look at someone like Andrae Allison in the 3rd instead of Hill.
Brown should give an OL starter from when training camp starts.
If the team's background checks on Wright pan out, you get first round material at the 40th pick.

Agreed. I also have no problem with picking a true high end Mike at the two and moving Meco to the Will this summer for a look see.

Look I know the Leron Clan or the Kolb in the second clan doesn't like this mock.

Two things that frustrate me are the people on the one hand that say the combine numbers mean absolutly nothing. Look at the flim. Judging by the film, Brown should be the guy. And on the other hand, they comeback and refuse to consider the second best OLT in the class. The other thing is...the cring in the off season after two, count them two, OLT guys we by passed make the pro bowl team. Is Levi Brown the third ? I mean com'on which is it? The two guys we by passed had the same negitive rep. They supposedly, were not quick enough.

I truly don't know. I know the guy has outstanding feet, long arms and large hands. He is a knee bender who dominated at the senior bowl week. He is not perfect. But he isn't dog doo doo either. In the worst case scenario you lock down RT with and extreemly talented quick footed big cabooosed guy. Best case, his large hands, long arms and quick feet make up for the poor forty time. He's a football player. He gives them options down the road at tackle.

You're correct they may be able to "Wand it" and get it correct this time with Staley or Free. But after five years of this crap, with your season on the line, wouldn't you to prefer to be a little more sure than that ?

I think Brown moves this o-line thingy a little closer to being in our rear veiw mirror for a long while. He gives the team the best chance at success down the road. I'd love to have Petterson or Leron. But I want the o-line fixed more. That's where the rubber meets the road with this coach. He's gotta have the line to incorporate his play book. Say we can get that in the second round..We'll see. Our record on that front hasn't been very good thus far.
