Reggie Nelson's Ridiculous Pro Day

TFY initially reported that Nelson ran a 4.22 40 time at his Gator pro day....

"The moment that Reggie Nelson crossed the finish line and the pro scouts checked the number on their stopwatches, they started looking at each other and shaking their heads. The lowest number read 4.22. The highest read just a shade under 4.3. Nobody was the least bit surprised thirty minutes later when Nelson declined to run again. That sub-4.3 40 was all the statement he needed to make."

being just a tad bit skeptical, i decided to check NFL.com. here we go:

"Nelson ran the 40 once in a time of 4.35 seconds. He had a 35-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-6 long jump, ran 4.15 in the short shuttle and 6.70 in the three-cone drill. Nelson looked very good in the drills and may well have improved his stock. "

still, we're looking at a guy here who ran a 4.35, compared to the 4.55 he ran at the combine. his stock was near the end of the first, and now look at what we have here. top 15 pick.

What the !?!!?!?

That is a massive improvement. What is in the water down there??

Great chance of going top 15 now, perhaps the Falcons grab him now they have Horn??

No way he ran a 4.2. I have seen him play, and he is not as fast or faster than Mathis.

Wow, that's really impressive. He pretty much had to do that. It looks like he just had a bad day at the combine. just made himself some money there.

IMO he just caught back up with Laron Landry for the first S taken.

He may have but I still take Landry over Nelson any day of the week. Landry's 1 inch taller and about 15 lbs heavier....and now it looks like they pretty much have the same speed. Both are ball-hawks but Landry is a much better tackler imo.

I agree it looks like Atlanta is gonna take whoever is highest on their list. Landry,Nelson, Hall etc. There's a lot of talk they'd be moving one of their cb's to safety. it looks like secondary to me..for their pick

Thats impressive, but I really question why it didn't show at the combine which was only 2 weeks ago. Does anyone else wonder or am I the only one who is curious how he dropped .2 of his 40 time?

I think he just had a bad day and didn't run very well at the combine. His time at the combine REALLY surprised me...so i just think it was an 'off' day for him.

Numbers aside, the bottom line is that this guy can play the hell out of the safety position! Whoever gets him is going to get a guy with 'STARDOM' written all over him.

i tried to tell you guys in a previous post....reggie nelson is the best safety in the draft. he plays with sub 4.3 speed. saw him play in every college game of his career. they call him the eraser because he erases the mistakes corners make. he is the next ed reed. i would take him over landry in a heartbeat. if you watched the UF LSU game this year, Landry was abused. im so happy for reggie. i dont know if most of you know, he recently lost his mom to cancer, right before the bcs champ game. give em hell in the nfl reggie!!!

He's more of a playmaker than Landry. Think Ed Reed versus John Lynch. Can't really lose either way but Nelson is going to be a great pro. Something just tells me he is going to be a bigger difference maker. I thought that before the special koolaid hit his system. Of course we all thought Ko would be a steal in the second and he lasted several spots into the fourth. Buffalo got a steal. Daniels is good though but I wonder if they had to do it again who would they take.

IMO this is great. Here's why. I got more and more worried that Minnesota would snag Landry at 7. (Why in the hell I have no idea, I just always see that in mock drafts) Now, IF that's the case drafting Nelson at 8 would not be a stretch. We desperately need a FS. Looks like we can't go wrong with either.

We could trade down to 15 and pick up an extra 3rd rounder and still get Nelson.

I don't know if he would slip past Atlanta... That's kinda what I'm worried about. Now if Landry AND Nelson were available, thats another story-Landry hands down-. Plus, Nelson at 8 is barely a reach.

Atlanta taking ANOTHER DB in the 1st would be a little much. Aaron Rouse in the 2nd or 3rd I could see them doing. Plus, he's from VT...he's a perfect fit for them.

deangelo hall sucks, so they need a good safety to save face and make him look competent every once in a while. so drafting nelson makes perfect sense.

But as you said earlier, and I totally agree, if you have a good front 7, your secondary play isn't THAT important. He's a playmaker and he'd fit anywhere, but I just don't think their interior is up to snuff yet.

that is simply not true. tebow trucked him on one play, but that's just pure physics. landry played very well. you don't have to down one guy to praise your guy.

he got burnt on a few plays, including tebows td pass to murphy. nelson, on the other hand, playing against the future #1 pick in the draft, spearheaded a D that picked him off 3 times and held them to 10 pts. im just sayin landry didnt look like the best safety on the field

Miss Texan, I also agree that people have off days. However, what bothers me is the fact that he allowed himself to have that big an off day when it probably counted the most. So, what is he going to do when he gets to the NFL. How is he going to handle that kind of pressure. .20 reduction in the 40 is alot and alot of other factors come into play (ie. running surface, weather etc.). I wonder how much faster Landry could have run in those same circumstances. I would assume better. To me, he had his chance to run 3 times at the combine and the result was alot slower. My vote goes to Landry if we were to take one in the first without trading down.

All I want to know is which way was the wind blowing on Gator Pro Day, and which way was he running. I'm a little hesitant to beleive that he ran a 4.3 or better. Besides, even if he did, his stock is in the tape. He can go and run as many 40s as he wants, its all in the game tapes. You want to find a football player? Look at the tapes and not at the 40 time.

I dont think the Florida D beat LSU, LSU beat themselves like the fumble on the kickoff. LSU just played stupid that game. any other day lsu would have won. Landry is a better FS than Nelson, he has done it for so long and at such a high level. I mean look at Laron; he is faster, stronger, bigger, and smarter. He stunned the Ravens on how he was able to see when they had messed up coverages. not to mention his instincts.

Good point

It's Ole Miss.....Texan just to clarify. Ole Miss (meaning University of Mississippi)

check this out:
Safety Reggie Nelson was timed as fast as 4.31-seconds during today’s pro-day workout and as “slow” as 4.38-seconds. Nelson also turned in some swift times during the drills clocking 6.68-seconds in the cone drill and 4.39 seconds in the short shuttle.

The versatile defensive back was flawless during drills. His hands were so soft people rarely heard a sound when he caught the ball, as opposed to the usual “thud” that occurs when defensive backs usually catch the ball.

Why such a big improvement since last Tuesday in Indianapolis?

In a nutshell, the long drain of the combine process.

We have learned that Nelson was one of the most interviewed players on hand while at the combine. 27 teams interviewed Nelson in Indianapolis. The interview process was so lengthy it took him past 11PM in the evening and twice Nelson was unable to have dinner.

Nelson was so impressive today that Bill Bellicheck and Scott Pioli of the Patriots will be sticking around in Gainesville to individually work him out tomorrow.

The Jaguars have also set up an individual workout with him as did Buddy Nix of the San Diego Chargers.
27 teams?? that's ridiculous. almost unheard of. basically, nelson is one of the most sought-after players in this draft.

There is somthing really special about this guy. He is really fun to watch. He is one of my favorite players in this draft if not the favorite and you wont hear me complain once if we draft him at 8.
