those numbers are a bit off.

"The Miami Dolphins and LB Joey Porter have reached agreement on a five-year, $32.5 million deal that includes $20 million worth of guaranteed money."

from NFL.com, so it's now official. woot.

we had one of the best front 7's in the NFL last year. now...good lord. two of the best sack-specialists in the NFL on one team? capers will haev a blast.

twenty million is a lot of guaranteed money. capers must have some real pull in that organization now. porter is obviously a top tier player but we will see how he does down there in Miami.

What's going on with Porter now is one reason you don't give a 30 year old FA 20 million guaranteed, one year after a knee scope. I thought the guaranteed money was ridiculous when the contract was signed - it seems even more ridiculous now.

Fans are always clamoring to sign the big name FAs if there's available cap space, but there's major risk in laying out that kind of money on one guy.

He's only getting a scope done on his knee, right? He'll be back in a couple weeks.

Am I missing something else?

This is his third knee procedure in two years. "Just a scope"s tend to take their toll over time - especially on guys who are past their prime, like Porter. I would be concerned about the recurring nature of his knee pain. It's not ligaments but I know at least one of the procedures was to repair torn cartilage. Talk in Miami is that he will miss the entire preseason, which is probably a good plan if they want to get their $20+ million worth out of him. From my uneducated viewpoint, I think he's sliding down the slippery slope toward the end of his playing career.
