Green signing one of best according to Fox Sports

I, for one, am happy with this pick. It gives the Texans a proven back and of course, veteran leadership. Price was a little too high but time will tell if the Texans will get their return on investment.

Thanks for sharing, but it certainly shows most of these pundits do not understand the business. He mentions the contract, but not the signing bonus which is the real key for these FA signings.

From the link above:

5. Ahman Green to Houston — He told us he had the Texans as one of his top choices and the Texans needed a veteran presence at running back. Green knows line coach Mike Sherman well from their days together in Green Bay and will enter camp healthier than he has been in years. I know some feel the four-year, $23 million contact was too much, but I think it will pay dividends on the field and in the locker room this year.
I think this team still needs veteran presence at just about every position. Of course, Adam Schein is the same Fox guy who thinks the Texans shouldn't give up on David Carr. So what does he know? :goodbad:

Exactly. The signing bonus was prohibitively low especially by Texans standards and seemed to be that Ahman WANTED to come to Houston. I think it could end up being one of the best signings in the NFL this offseason.

Even if we are forced to witness yet another season of pathetic QB play, we can at least take solace that we have a pretty damn good stable of RBs and an OL that can open some holes.

'Batman' just hit the tarmac in Houston. Here is to him having much success as a Houston Texan.

As someone who believes Carr is a 3-4 million QB, at best, I am elated that we have an accomplished veteran at RB to help out are challenged QB.

Well KT I for one am going to be tantalized to see how long the KT line holds on Ahmen there. That is going to be one of my little dramas playing out the next two seasons. I look forward to it. Going to be a hoot. :bowser:

Good point. You took the words right off my keyboard.

Peter King didnt like it in his MMQB.

But what does Peter know. The only deals he liked were Adalius Thomas and Shaun O'Hara.

This is 2007 King! Not 1997.

I don't like it, but I guess I'll have to deal with it. Just hope his two games out last year due to a previous injury doesn't multiply while here with us this season. *sigh* I hope Lundy is able to step it up this year if he does end up being another highly-paid player riding the pine.
I swear, if we did this so we can pass on Lynch and draft Quinn, I'm gonna kick this computer desk.

I'll be here to spar with you brutha. Like Mayo said in an Officer and a Gentleman, "I got nowhere else to go!" :texflag:

*cough* did we just quote a line from Officer and a Gentlemen?? This indeed is going to be a loooooooooooong offseason.... lol

i'm intruiged with the signing. unless we are totally remodeling the run game, because i'm still trying to figure out wherre dd is going to fit in all of this.

Peter King is such a strange writer. Half of his articles are not related to sports, and apparently he's a pretty boring person, judging from the things that interest him as well as his opinions about movies, music, and television.

He mixes good analysis with atrocious analysis, which leads me to believe he devotes his film time to watching his favorite teams/players, because his opinions about players and coaches who aren't on the patriots, giants, jets, or packers tends to fall short of intelligent commentary. The guy is in love with name dropping, and never fails to take an opportunity to let his readers know about how much insider info he gets.

My theory about Peter King is that he's just oblivious, and that most of his legitimate football analysis comes from coaches he talks to. It seems to me like a lot of coaches use him an easy way to spread disinformation or blow smoke. Much like Ron Burgundy will read anything you put on the teleprompter, King will repeat whatever a coach, agent, or scout tells him, just so he can let everyone know how connected he is. Apparently all it takes to gain King's journalistic trust is to smile, shake his hand, and after that you can pretty much feed him junk because he can't tell the difference between legitimate analysis and propaganda.

Is that an accurate summary of the value of Peter King's opinions?

...Much like Ron Burgundy will read anything you put on the teleprompter, King will repeat whatever a coach, agent, or scout tells him...
Son of a bee sting! I can't allow you to compare a hack like Peter King to a legend such as Ron Burgundy. I don't know how to put this, but Ron Burgundy is kind of a big deal.

makes $6.3 over 4 years seem pretty good, huh?

"[Travis] Henry hauled in $12 million in guaranteed money from the Denver Broncos as part of a five-year deal, according to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network."

http://www.nfl.com/nflnetwork/story/10033511

And that is why green is here and travis is there...money. They got it we don't. Do you guys think the Texans and Denver are playing good cop bad cop with these guys. Just a thought .

do you think we could get even a 6th or 7th rounder for him? Because if we could, I'd at least think about it.
Dom Davis/Williams knee is bone on bone. You can't just shoot him with pain killer and hope he can run. He needs more surgery as has been reported on the mb. Why would any team give us anything for a player that 99% will not ever play again? Two sides to every trade. We are one but who is the other?

So long, in fact, I made an Officer and a Gentleman Avatar.

Hope David gets the same end result as Mayo.

Injury settlement and retirement, probably. They announced that he needs another surgery today. I didn't think he was going to come back before hearing that, I really don't think he's coming back after hearing that.

1. (you forgot) the Cutting Table. lol

I think if someone goes back, we can find several threads and posts where many of us assumed he was done, some time ago, even before this latest set-back...

Bone on bone is not a good recipe for a running back - at any level.

Agreed. So will i so will i. I really wanted Lynch in Houston. This just pisses me off

Well, john clayton said it wasn't the smartest move a team can make. he said that the Texans paid too much.

9 year vet, 30 years old. Conventional wisdom says we DID pay too much. We'll have to wait and see. I hope he proves me wrong.

Green's injury last year was a pulled hamstring. His injury the previous year was a torn quadriceps. Different muscles.

But he will be 34 and a 14 year vet when the contract he just signed runs out. How many 34 year old running backs do we know that kick ****?

A 2 year deal would have made more sense, but a 4 year deal? I sure hope I can laugh at myself in the year 2010 and say, "Dang, that Green is a kick *** running back". We didn't need Lynch, AD, or Irons.... But we all know that probably won't happen... But it could...

Edit - I guess I could throw in M Bush into that mix as well...

Yeah, I heard that about DD/DW tonight on the Ch 13 sports. I guess it's good we got Green, but I can't understand why so much money and for 4 years! Do they really think he'll last that long? He's already 30. I hope he doesn't end up like this :crutch: or this :ouch: after a few games.

Also, what about Dayne? Does this mean they are just going to let him go? Has anybody heard anything?

I get where you're coming from. But we can't address every need through FA and the draft this year. If we would have drafted lynch..then we couldn't have the stud FS/DT/DE etc.

I think our RB situation is far from over...but it's fine for next year and maybe 2008. i'd like us to sign dayne too. Next year has some good OL and RB. esp in the 1st.

It's going to take time for us to get all the pieces together. One guy I'm already looking at is Ben-Jarvis Green-Ellis : Indiana transfer RB to Ole Miss...he could be a solid 3rd rounder maybe..or early 2nd day. for me.

I'd rather us spend our 1st and 2nd rounders this year and next on franchise positions besides RB....like FS, OL, DL...maybe even a stud WR next year.

look at the contract. front loaded

green brings a recognizable name to the team too. i for one will be buying a green jersey because im a huge fan of his. the signing brings more to the team than just the much needed RB fix

I think most people that comment on the contract being too much don't realize that with NFL contracts only the signing bonus is guarenteed money. Ahman Green could have his leg amputated tomorrow and the Texans would only owe him 6.5 million dollars. At any point during the 4 year contract the Texans can get out of the contract without taking a huge cap hit like they have on other former players's contracts.

Try to understand in the NFL, a 4 year deal is at most a 3 year deal, and most likely a 2 year deal. Chances are he'll get a salary of about $3million in '07, $4million in '08. By the time '09 comes around, he could have a salary of $6million, and unless he kicked but in '07 & '08, he won't make the team to get that salary.

He'd have played for two years, and earned $7million, plus a $6million bonus. $13million/2yrs= $6.5million/yr.

The contract is spread over 4 years, to make it easy to cut him, while absorbing a small cap hit.

IF he's cut before the start of camp, we'll have $6.5million of dead money going against the cap.

If we cut him before the '08 season, it'll be $4,8million

If we cut him before the '09 season, it'll be $3.25million

If we cut him before the '10 season, it'll be $1.625million

Now, someone like Travis Henry who just signed a 4 year $12million deal, if cut before the '08 season, the Broncos will take a $9million hit.
cut before the '09 season, it'll be a $6million cap hit.
cut before the '10 season, & they'll have $3million against the cap for a player not on the roster.

Stuart Scott of ESPN called him "the prettiest open field runner in the league." If he can stay healthy, he can turn into an excellent signing.

What he is saying (and I agree) is he has perfect running form. You could set a full glass of water on his head at the 50 and he would not spill a drop by the time he reaches the goal line.
