Am I the only person here who is starting to lose faith in our FO?

I don't understand it at all. We dump Eric Moulds?!?! Huh? He may not have been the superstar we wanted, but there are certainly many more players that have disappointed us more... Gado still has a job? DDW has a job? WTF?

So now we pick up Ahman Green. OK, he's decent, but one hardly expects that he's a week-in week-out game changer.

What the ******* has the FO been doing these last few days?!?! Since Friday, so many things have happened around the NFL in free agency. Most teams seem to be working their asses off to plug their gaping holes. Oakland, Detriot, TB, Minnesota have all been working feverishly to address their obvious needs, yet the Texans are lolligagging about signing yet another mediocre RB?!?!?!

HELLO!?!?!?! ANYONE HOME?!?!?! How about doing something about the LT position?!?!?! QB???? Now that all the top QB's prospects are gone because the FO has been sitting aroung picking their noses, what are we gonna do??!!

This is ridiculous. It seems like the FO is just shoving their head in a hole in the ground in order to ignore THE HUGE ASS ELEPHANT IN THE LIVING ROOM!

I try so hard to be supportive of the team. Watched every single game since the beginning. I just don't understand. Its so discouraging to see them make the bad decisions, over and over again. Isn't one definition of insanity; "Doing the same thing over and over, but expecting a different result"? David Carr???? Hello!?!?!?!?!

Does this mean most of the people on this MB are Insane. Stop complaining most FA are overpaid and underacheive.

Considering the guaranteed portion of Green's contract is just over 6 million, I don't see a whole lot of risk involved in that signing. He's a much better RB than anyone we've had on the roster in the past two seasons.

What exactly did you expect the Texas to do considering the shape they are in cap wise? That is how they got to this point in the first place. Overpaying for way to many player who are not even on the team anymore. That is how you acquire $20 million in dead money. If you want to go out and get a franchise left tackle, it is going to cost. Look at Dallas, they just spent almost $19 million in guarantees over three years. We do not have that type of money.

The fact of the matter is, the old regime really screwed us. Until we clear the cap problem, the Texans will not be a big player in the FA market.

J

There are days when you have to leave the budweiser on the shelf and snag the Old Milwuakee....

I agree, and love the metaphor you used btw, the big names need to be cleared off the market. When the mediocre upgrades hit the market in droves then the Texans step in to upgrade. One big name in the midst of crap will not change anything but maybe the ticket sales to the shallow fan base.

We need to look at the big picture here, we don't have much salary cap space and are going to have to make cadillacs out of volkswagons.

I'd have to disagree. I like the direction our season is heading into. We can't sign any of the big name guys due to our rebuilding phase and cap space. I like the signing of Ahman Green. He comes in and is automatically our starter.

They are really working on our cap space. cutting the expensive guys we don't need. I will concur, the Moulds release confuses me too, he must have been unhappy. They are clearing out our roster of the expensive guys that aren't contributing. We have a lot of dead money...thats not smith's fault thats charley's. We are going to have a lot more cap space next year because of what we're doing this year.

There aren't a lot of FA's at each position this year so they are all going to be expensive...esp w/ the cap increasing.

LT? I hope we address the OL via FA and the draft. However Leonard Davis was not the answer..I'm glad we stayed away from him. Jones vastly overpaid him to keep him off the redskins..why? i have no idea. He couldn't play LT,RT,LG,or RG in Arizona....and HE WOULD NOT FIT IN HERE IN HOUSTON...he's way to big and slow.

There is still what 7 weeks till the draft. FA has only been going less than 4 days. Let's just see what happens.

1) Cap Space...we're clearing a lot of it for next year
2) Green, good signing
3) I'd like us to look at Carlisle....is he still available?

It's not moving fast guys but that's good...otherwise we'd be way overpaying guys. Hang in there...I really like what we're doing. We havn't traded away any draft picks and don't think we're going to. I'm really looking forward to the Draft and rest of FA. Keep up the good work Kubes and Smith!

Thinking has it that Moulds did/said soemthing behind the scenes that lead to him being released. DDW is likely to be tradeed or cut on June 1 to move his cap hit to next year. Gado...I don't know, but we need depth heading into trading camp and if/when we cut him it won't be much of a hit. Or he could be the depth at RP when we put Chris Taylor back on teh practice squad.

So now we pick up Ahman Green. OK, he's decent, but one hardly expects that he's a week-in week-out game changer.

Yeah, I mean he's only the best FA RB on the market (ESPN has him as the 12th best FA overall). And with the his contract is structured it's a 1 to 2 year deal...alot like Moulds. Expect the Texans to draft another RB in April.

We didn't have the cap space to go after the big name FA's. It sucks but it's a fact, accelerating some of the dead money to this year was teh best descision of this offseason. As of Saturday only 12 teams had signed a FA, 20 other teams (including us) were either lacking in money to sign the big names are smart enough to let teh market calm down before having to overpay for a FA; cause overpaying for mid-level talent is what got us in this mess to start with.

HELLO!?!?!?! ANYONE HOME?!?!?! How about doing something about the LT position?!?!?! QB???? Now that all the top QB's prospects are gone because the FO has been sitting aroung picking their noses, what are we gonna do??!!

Name me the FA LT you would want to sign? Lenorad ****in Davis? There are 0 FA LT worth signing and even if there were how and even if there had been one worth signing how were we going to pay him. As for QB, I agree with the descison to not trade a draft pick for Plummer, and it looks like Smith made teh best run at Garcis that he could. And name me the FA QB who would have been the solution at QB. Once again we are in cap hell, maybe not hell but definityly cap purgatory.

This is ridiculous. It seems like the FO is just shoving their head in a hole in the ground in order to ignore THE HUGE ASS ELEPHANT IN THE LIVING ROOM!

Once again what the hell was the FO to do with NO cap space. They restructured AJ's deal, the signed Green and should be able to sign a few more mid level FAs; but if you thought that we were going to be able to sign a big name FA you were diluting yourself. Fact is we should look at this year as a rebuilding year, evaluate some more rookies/younger guys and next year we should be able to spend some big money during FA.

If u are losing faith already, your faith wasn't strong to begin with. We heard Smith/Kubes say many times we are not going to overspend for FA's, not going to overpay for a guys worth. The FA's we do sign are going to be short-term fix, this team is going to be built thru the draft. Last year draft was very impressive and this year i have no doubt that we are going to have another impressive draft. Look at the big picture and try to remain confident about what we are trying to accomplish, cuz we are still spring cleaning the old regime's hi-dollar,no-production guys.

next year we still wont have that much cap space. This is going to be over our heads for a few more years. Im all up for aquiring a couple no namers just to fill the roster, who knows maybe one of them can acually be a steal or something. I just wish we didnt get screwed over in the previous 5 years. you have to agree as fans this is very frustrating.

But I love the fact that they reconstructed AJ contract, that just proves to me that he want s to allways be a texan and that he wants to be here when this teams starts winning,.

I agree, we should have went after Garcia and signed him to a 10 year $95 million dollar contract with the promise not to draft a QB and $40 million in guarantee money, same with Clements, 9er's? Only $80 million? We could have easily went $90 million. Hey, Leanord Davis is out there, he plays left tackle, lets get him in here, I say 15 years 140 million with 100 million guarantee.

I can't believe that we are not even trying to trade for LT. Wanna talk about a lame FO. He's even from Texas, so that means he wants to be a Texan. Gosh

Someone get on the phone with the Colts so we can get Chad Johnson and Marvin Harrison. That would solve our WR problem.

I agree, why is this so hard?

Yeah last night I got the same feeling as well. Moulds though I believe is unhappy with the QB as you can tell he threw Carr under the bus when he left. Plummer will unretire somewhere mid-season and play for us especially if Carr is doing the same mistakes over and over. We have an LT his name is Charles Spencer and pray he makes his debut again this season. We will probably draft one in the draft thought. QB will probably be drafted as well. The main point of the story is .......barely any money to sign free agents....:mario:

PATIENCE! Free agency has JUST BEGUN! You guys want everything to happen in one day? The first few days the did a good job clearing some space with 3 cuts and Johnson's restructuring.

Then yesterday we landed a STARTING RB. Sure he might not be LT, but he's was the best RB available on the market, and we got him.

As far as other FAs.

First of all we don't have the money like other teams thanks to "you know who".

Second I'm GLAD they aren't signing players to the stupid contracts that are being handed out. 3 lineman signing $49 million dollar deals? I'll pass thank you. Nate Clements $80 million? Right..

And as far as LT goes, they don't grow on trees my friend. There really aren't any LEGIT starting LTs on the market. Maybe Luke Pettigout, but he's coming off a major injury. I hope this position will be handled in the draft with Levi Brown potentially.

Other than that I think they are doing fine. Moulds didn't add much to this team, I'd rather have a speed guy opposite Andre. DW will be cut eventually, and there is nothing wrong with hanging on to Gado for insurance.

If we can sign a few modest free agents like Ken Hamlin and Cooper Carlisle then I'll consider this offseason a GREAT SUCCESS.

Considering the guaranteed portion of Green's contract is just over 6 million, I don't see a whole lot of risk involved in that signing. He's a much better RB than anyone we've had on the roster in the past two seasons.

How about ever on this roster. If green can become 85% of what he was in Green Bay he's better than DD ever has been. GB was a team that ran RB screens ALOT so you know he can catch pretty good. Now consider that with the fact that he ran for almost 1100 yds AFTER coming off serious knee surgery the year before.

& as far as our front office, we're not doing to shabby considering what we have under the cap. Look at Tennessee, they've been extremely quiet with TONS of money under the cap & releasing their # 1 rushing RB & WR. You think that their fans aren't wonder what the hell is going on?

He can't unretire and play for us. Tampa Bay owns the rights to Plummer for the next 3 years. If he unretires he is Tampa Bays. That whole trade seems almost illegal and a way to screw Plummer and Kubiak. Denver knew Kubiak wanted Plummer and that Plummer wanted to come to Houston.

Man it does seem that like if anyone wants to play for us fate says no...What did we do to deserve this? VY wanted to play here, Plummer wanted to play here, and OSQ said AP wanted to play here as well. But we won't get him in the draft. man its like someone is punishing us....

Tampa could trade Plummer to us but I don't think the Texans want to give anything for him. They wanted Denver to cut him.

Marv, I am not challenging your opinion. You want a good team; me too.

But has anyone ever gone on message boards for stocks and notice the hilarious similarities between the boards?

I read messages like yours here and on yahoo! finance every day.

Other than the Moulds release, I really like the direction they have undertaken so far this offseason. And, even with the Moulds situation, I think there is much more than meets the eye.

Signing Green to me is huge. He is not medicore. Maybe he isn't the 4 time pro-bowler anymore, but he is easily the best back we have ever had, and should help take some pressure off of whomever our QB is, as well as the line. I also like how the contract is structured. The Casserly era is truly over.

The key to how good we can be this yr is what they do about the QB spot. We sorely need a new start there. And, finally, it looks to me like they know that. We have gone after virtually every FA QB with a pulse, had a contingent looking at Brady Quinn. If I am Carr, I have to realize the hand writing is on the wall. That is the most encouraging development to me.

We just need a good draft, and we should be somewhere around 500 this yr, contingent on the QB situation.

Next yr, we can flex our muscle a little more in FA, and hopefully have another good draft - I then see us as bona fide playoff contenders.

This FO knows what it is doing. I am more confident than ever in that. Give them time to implement there plan, and I think everyone will be happy.

Lastly, anyone who really thought (yes I am talking to you Davies and Dukes) that Leonard Davis was the answer here is smoking crack.

blah

What exactly where you expecting from our front office? To go after Leonard Davis, Erich Steinbach, Addalius Thomas, and Nate Clements when we can't afford any of them? Our front office is cleaning up the mess that the previous regime left behind (excluding Moulds, that's Kubiak's blunder). With $20 million in dead money this coming season, we don't exactly have the financial resources to sign the top tier free agents.

I don't like the signing of Green. Too much money for an old beat up fella.

I only hope he can keep it together for 2 yrs.

So in 12 yrs we're gonna catch some old fella named Bush and give him a multi-year, mult-million deal. He'll play half a season, get hurt, we trade him the following off season taking a huge hit, and he goes on to play a pro-bowl season the next year for some other team. :stirpot:

God help us.

6.5 million guaranteed....that's less than What Travis Henry would fetch. Green was solid last season and over a year removed from his surgery. It's a great signing.

I couldn't reach those guys, but I did get this guy on the Horn.

For all of those who are upset with the Texans moves in free agency or who are losing faith in the front office, it may help to take a step back and look at the big picture. As has been mentioned numerous times on this board, we have very limited money to work with this offseason and because we are in the second year of rebuilding the franchise, there aren't going to be any major impact players who are going to be willing to play for the Texans for a discount. Comparing what we have done this offseason against what other teams have done isn't appropriate or fair...we are not comparing apples to apples. There are teams who have a lot more money to spend and/or have lessholes to fill, which allows them to spend all of their money on one specific need.

With the limited cap space we have this season, the most we can expect from our front office is to try to find some players in free agency that can provide quality depth and then hope to find some impact guys in the draft. Again, we don't have the cap room to sign a 27 year old, three time pro-bowler, so the front office is going to have to take some chances on (i) some mid level young players and hope that they can excel in our system or (ii) some older players who are beyond their prime, but who can still contribute.

With these "managed expectations", I think we have done alright:

(1) Spencer/ Kalu - Both of these signings came without much excitment on this board, but both of these players can contribute as solid back-ups and, if necessary, can step in a starting role. I like the signing of veteran guys who know their role on the team, who know the system that we run and can provide a little continuity from one year to the next.

(2) Green - There has been a lot of mixed reaction on this board regarding this pick-up, but I like this addition. At worst, Green provides some insurance at a key position that we needed to address. If AP is there at 8, we will have two great backs. If not, we have short term solution until some of the younger guys develop or until next year's draft. I think Green is an upgrade over Dayne (who is not even locked up for our team next year), but even if this is not the case - and Dayne does sign - we will have two older backs that can split carries. Most importantly, we add leader who can provide leadership (and hopefully an identity) to an offense that has never had a personality to follow. We have had some veterans on the offensive line, but I am not sure that we have any other credible player on offense to take this role - Carr...nothing needs to be said here, Andre is not a vocal guy, DD/DW maybe for a short time before he was injured. Of course this is a gamble...all moves in the draft and FA are, but I think that we are taking a calculated risk at a reasonable price.

(3) Andre - IMO, this has been the best move in the off-season. Nothing speaks to the credibility of a new staff and front office like the best player on a team agreeing to a major extension and freeing up space in the cap room this year. There may be some fans that have already lost faith in this regime, but it is clear to me that Andre is comfortable enough with the progress and direction that we are going in to sign an extension. This signing sets a good tone for the other young talented players that we want to keep on this team.

I think if we can sign up Leech, as well as another veteran OL and DB, we will have done pretty good for ourselves this offseason. You have to set realistic expectations and to lose faith in the FO for failing to achieve much more is unfair.

At least our FO is doing something there are alot of teams out there who have done nothing this off season. Like the Titans all that cap room, and yet all they have done is lost a starting RB cuase they did not want to pay him 8.3 million in a bonus, and lose a Starting WR. Don't be mad at our FO.

I know. What in the hell is up with the Titans. They better start looking for a corner also bc Pac-man might not be there next season. I know I wouldnt want someone like that on my franchise.

Obviously we didn't want him that bad. At least not enough to trade away our future to get him. I'm glad that they're not selling out for short term potential gains, especially with an inconsistent QB like Plummer. We've already got one of those, and don't need a full set.

I've got confidence in this FO. We have to give them time - it's Rick Smith's first off-season with us - and see how things work out. But I like the cooperation that seems to permeate our FO now, as opposed to the cluster**** that was the C & C machine.

You mean you're just now losing faith in the Texans FO? I completely lost my faith around this time last year.

You probably are not the only person starting to lose confidence in the FO but I am not one of them.

As others have said, we have to bite our lip a bit during this FA period and take what is there that can make us better without doing anything stupid (like we have done before). This is a team that is going to be primarily built off of the draft.

That said, a key guy that I am looking at is the Seahawk FS Hamlin, a definite upgrade over CC Brown. If we don't get something done with him, we may be telegraphing our first pick in the draft.

Unlike Casserly and Capers (who I really believe most educated fans could have beaten regarding personnel moves), Kubiak and Smith will get this done right IMO.

Oakland hasn't made any signings. What exactly are they doing to improve their team?

Green is far from a mediocre running back. He might be on the downside of his career, but this is a back who ran for almost 1900 yards 3 years ago. I won't expect that kind of performance, but even 70% is better than what the Texans have had.

As for the whole Plummer situation, I'm not sure it's all done. I find it hard to believe Shanahan would send him to Tampa just to keep him from Houston. He and Kubiak are supposedly still close and little Shanahan is the new QB coach here. Maybe he knew Houston couldn't afford to get rid of any draft picks. If Plummer unretires Tampa is going to be forced to get rid of him or keep 3 QBs with high contracts. By doing things this way Denver can get a pick for him and Houston won't have to lose one. This could just be blind optimism, but it's what I am going to believe until I see otherwise.

About the plummer situation. i simply think that 1) we weren't willing to give up our 4th round pick for plummer and 2) tampa bay picks before us so they would have traded with them anyways....in an unbiased world at least lol.

Texans have 2 strikes against them in Free Agency
1) Minimal money to spend
2) Only 6 wins last year and never made the playoffs

How many players look at that as a place they want to be. Some people can look beyond that and see the future most of us on the message board are hoping for.

I have read on the board that our FO is sitting around doing nothing. Well maybe they called Clements, Thomas, Davis and they said, ah no thanks. Come back when your a winner or have some cash.

So far the Texans are moving forward and if they can have a draft even 50% as good as last years we will be sitting pretty with some money in free agency next year and a better record to attract the bigger names.

As long as they are not throwing money away, I am happy.

Let me say that thru a lot of innuendo and hear say, I can actually hear the band tuning up to play, "Send in the Clowns." The FO really hasn't done anything to this point. There has been alot of talk about Carr and Plummer but nothing really from the front office. They have remained suspiciously quite on the subject. You scratch your head when you hear Carr is out 1 year after receiving $13,000,000 and Kubiak's endorsement he can take us to the Super Bowl. If this were to happen, it immediately brings in to question the passing on (3) franchise QBs last year. Drafting Quinn will only exacerbate the passing of the (3) franchise QBs last year. The only support Carr has received from the FO in the off season is, he is our starting QB, right now? Releasing Carr, now, would be the first nail in the coffin for Kubiak's Houston Texans coaching career. Not because Carr was bad but because of the money they spent and who they passed up because of their decision. This would come back to haunt Kubiak sooner rather than later. A majority of fans will hold him accountable for the decision.

Releasing Moulds added $3.7 million to the cap this year. The FO is showing that they are evaluators of unacceptable talent, after the fact. I think they have bungled the whole QB situation, developed a real quagmire and have backed themselves in to a corner. As of now these are the only (2) blunders they have made. You get the feeling that more decisions are coming that would be more nails in their coffin.

If we'd just trade carr we could get a draft choice and then give the draft choice to Denver/Tampa for Plummer. What's so hard to figure out about that?

Jeeze.

Obviously we didn't want him that bad. At least not enough to trade away our future to get him.

Hey Double, turn on your hearing aid. THey wanted a three, maybe a four, and we've got Carr sitting there ready to be traded for a three or a four. Trading this kind of draft pick is clearly NOT "trading away our future."

OK some others have already straighten you out. Come on. Casserly left this team in a shambles. His cap guy was not much better at structuring contracts. We had $20,000,000.00 in dead money on the cap. That is a lot of bad contracts.

Like others said, Moulds did/said something, there is no other way. I believe he asked to be released, he thought he would get more chances, and they were not happening in the Kubaik system.

Green is consider to be the best FA RB available this off-season, sad but true. What did you want? Clements, Ok we had a shot, but truly 20+ teams had more money available then we do.

Do you remember the last few FA signing that we did on day one of the FA signing period? Smith, Wade, Greenwood ring any bells? You should not over pay. You need to have a solid core and you do that in the draft, we do not have a solid core. We are starting to get there but it takes a few years.

Patience grasshopper
