"The Dallas Cowboys are finalizing an agreement with free agent offensive lineman Leonard Davis, the second pick in the 2001 NFL draft who has played the last six seasons for the Arizona Cardinals, a source with knowledge of the negotiations told ESPN.com.

Top free agents

DavisOffensive tackle Leonard Davis is No. 8 on ESPN.com's list of the top NFL free agents on the market. Story

Davis, 6-feet-6, 366 pounds, is expected to play either right tackle or right guard for the Cowboys, depending on the resolution of contract talks with current Cowboys right tackle Marc Columbo, an unrestricted free agent the Cowboys hope to re-sign.

Davis' contract is expected to exceed the free agent deals of Bills guard Derrick Dockery (7 years, $49 million) and Browns guard Eric Steinbach (7 years, $49.5 million).

Davis visted the Washington Redskins and was considering a visit to the New York Giants, but decided on the Cowboys due to a desire to stay close to his hometown of Wortham, Texas, just south of Dallas.

Davis was an All-America tackle at the University of Texas, and played his first three seasons at guard for the Cardinals before switching to tackle the last three seasons."

DAVIS TO DALLAS

Michael Smith of ESPN.com reports that the Dallas Cowboys are finalizing a deal for offensive lineman Leonard Davis, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2001 draft.

Davis is expected to play right tackle or right guard.

The contract is expected to exceed the mammoth deals given to three non-Pro Bowl offensive linemen who were in the right place at the right time this week: Kris Dielman, Eric Steinbach, and Derrick Dockery.

From PFT.

I like the signing, considering who signed him.

You're right. He showed A LOT of promise at Arizona.

I didn't say the guy did great or lived up to potential. Just that they used him back and forth between LT and guard and I think he is better suited for RG or RT, which is where he will play for Dallas. We will see.

It depends on where we play him.

If we signed him to play RT, it was a mistake. Hopefully we'll be able to come to terms with Columbo on a reasonable deal and keep Davis inside.

If we signed him to play RG and replace Rivera, then it's a good move.

the boys really overpaid for this guy...but so did a lot of teams with the o-lineman this year...kinda looking forward to seeing how many todd wades those guys turn out to be

what? when he played G he was one of the elite players in the NFL.

Agreed though I wouldn't go so far as to say he was an elite G. Certainly better at G than at T though.

It's also worth pointing out that Flozell Adams becomes a free agent at the end of next season. If they decide not to re-sign him, Davis gives them some flexibility. Obviously I'd prefer them not to play Davis at LT but he could if he had to.

A play that stands out to me is when Demarcus Ware bullrushed Davis two years ago when Arizona came to town. Ware gave up over 100 lbs but shoved Davis into the QB that forced an INT. Keep him at G...please.
