Texans looking at Travis Henry

If things with Ahman Green don't work out, we still have a shot at Travis Henry
The Packers, Texans and Raiders also talked to Henry’s agent, Hadley Engelhard, Today, but the Packers are waiting to see what happens with Green before making any moves. They didn’t set up a visit with Henry.

I saw this earlier and wasn't sure if I should post because it was a blog entry, but it seems believable.
***** According to various sources, the Texans have shifted their attention to free agent ex-Bills/Titans RB Travis Henry. Henry's agent Hadley Engelhard said that:

"Green Bay and Oakland have expressed interest in my client, but Houston appears to be in the lead for his services".

Henry is meeting with Denver officials this weekend.

:marionaner: I'd much rather have Henry than Green at any point. I posted that he was cut, but I didn't know we were in the running. La Oss Reise, Texans!!!!!! :piano:

and the plot thickens....hope he doesnt sign with the bucs or 49ers...seems like everyone we look at signs with either of those 2 teams

I know huh?! But he will be an incredible upgrade either way you look at it, it all depends on how much $$$ he is wanting really.

Henry is one of the players I want the most in FA. I hope we can do what it takes to get him just to stick it to a division rival and get a top 10 running back in the fold imo

henry would probably fit a little better in than green but both have medical issues...i think henry has more tread on the tires...but in the end i don't see either one being a major player for us for years to come

Henry had some character/off-field issues with Buffalo. Anyone know if those are behind him? I think I prefer him to Green all things considered, especially considering dollar for dollar. All in all, I would be pretty excited.

Green's asking for five million a season...I'd actually give it to Henry. Wonder if Henry's release has anything to do with restructuring Andre??? Pay the man.

I remember him rushing for over 100 yards for the Bills on a broken leg. He was understandably upset that after back to back great seasons, they drafted Willis McGahee.

Travis Henry is a much better back at this point of his career than Ahman Green. I'd much rather have Henry over Green.

Me too. I've had a man-crush on him since he led me to my first fantasy football championship. It was real hard seeing him in Tennessee. I will pray tonite for Travis's redemption. Feel free to do the same.

Even though he was a good back in Buffalo I was really impressed the way he ran last year for the Titans. Even though VY got most of the glory, deservedly so, Henry's running was one of the main reasons the Titans almost made the playoffs.

Man, lets get Henry...I can't stand the way Green fumbles.

Green had all of one more fumble last season than Henry (while playing one less game). And over the course of his career, Henry has been as or more fumble-prone than Green. He's had seasons of 11 fumbles and 7 fumbles... and that's two of his four years as a starter. The difference? Henry's fumbles were largely ignored on non-contending Buffalo teams, while Green's fumbles made news because the Packers are one of the league's most popular teams.

Henry's last three years were 3.5 and 3.8 YPC, and he was off to a 2.7 YPC start this year... until Vince Young (the ultimate decoy) came into the game, and suddenly his YPC shot up. That seems more like a product of the system (i.e. Young) than it does him magically improving on the spot.

Also, Green has had one injury, but has otherwise been extremely durable. Henry has a history of several nagging injuries that haven't gone away. In addition, Green is an excellent receiver out of the backfield, with 46 catches for more than 8 YPC last season... much better than Henry's 18 for 78.

Henry looks better in the small sample size of last season and is the sexier choice, but when you look at the surrounding factors, it's very risky. I'd rather take my chances with Green.

No matter where he goes, www.travishenry.com is in need of a serious makeover at this point!

TH is one of the few FAs I'd actually like the Texans to take a shot at. A bona fide 1200-yard rusher in '06 who, all season long, only fumbled as much as David Carr did in the first half of the Raiders game.

Could be costly, but worth taking a look at, and certainly more appealing than A. Green (unless you are Mike Sherman...?)

I know, this could be a problem because Travis Henry is not on the Packers or Broncos. Anyone got a connection between Kubes/Sherman/Broncos/Packers and Henry?

dude if we got Travis Henry and some big defensive (and O-line!) players in the draft we would have a legit playoff chance. however we would definitely need to get a new QB

We seriously need to get this guy. He's a lot better than Ahman Green.

I think another reason why Henry would be more valuable would be that he's coming from a bigtime competitor in our division. Hurting Tennessee only helps us. It would leave them with LenDale White as their only RB if Chris Brown leaves too.

Henry should be given a nice contract offer...hey...maybe give him the 8.3 million dollar bonus that Tennessee won't.

Whoa now. Are you saying that Henry's performance was attributable to having Vince Young, a rookie QB, on his team, but Green's "significantly better" performance with Brett Favre doesn't balance that out?

Gotta disagree with you on that.

Texans | Team has had discussions with T. Henry
Sat, 3 Mar 2007 19:44:10 -0800

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the Houston Texans have had discussions with free agent RB Travis Henry (Titans).

If the Texans sign Henry, I guess you can flush all those AP/Marshawn rumors down the commode...

Gotta disagree with you on that.

Absolutely. The running game isn't only dependent on the strength of the vertical passing game, which many people believe or want to believe. It's also dependent on the other decoys in the offense. With Vince Young, linebackers are a step slow. Any handoff could be a fake and Young could keep it himself and run around the end. That makes linebackers and defensive ends a step slow in their run containment, because they have to be certain VY isn't keeping it himself.

That, to me, is one of the biggest impacts Young has — his ability to open up the running game for the backs. Take a look, for example, at how much the Texas OL and RBs seemed to underachieve last season relative to expectations. Before Vince this season, Henry rushed for 2.7 YPC. After, 4.7. His two previous seasons (before 12 games with Vince) were 3.5 and 3.8 YPC. I'd prefer Green.

I'd take TH over Green...but both have issues.

Green is coming back from injury, and is getting older.

Travis has a history of small nagging things(like DD/DW did before the knee injury)...and an apparent PR problem and maybe drugs.

So, who do you take?

It's really a coin flip...either could work both have issues(and after DD/DW) I wouldn't want any injury trouble. So, take Green to avoid it.

Well, I heard on the Ch. 13 sports at 10:30 that Green was signed by the Niners. He was supposed to go to the Rockets game with Rick Smith and I think Lalee (sp?) the WR from Atlanta, but Green didn't show up. He had already signed with S.F.

I think you got Lelie and Green screwed up. Lelie got signed by the 49ers and that's why he didn't show up. It would be hard for me to believe that it was Green who signed with the niners.

Don't you mean Lalee had signed with San Fran?

The bottom line is we need to pursue as many options as we can get. Out of 31 other teams, including the one they were playing for, it's pretty darn hard to lure just one FA in particular to the Texans. If we were to get Green or Henry, I'd be happy. I just recall Henry always having good games vs us (not terribly hard to do however). I also think the chances of us drafting a RB were getting remote. This would allow us to focus on drafting a RB in 08/09 when we would have less needs to fill. This year, I count like 9 positions of need.

Prefer Henry to Green, I think he has more left in the tank.

Then again I see him being a similiar type of runner to Dayne and I think Dayne can be had for cheaper. In saying that he probably deserves more money than Dayne.

Green and Henry both out rushed for over a thousand last year with just as bad of a run O-line at the Texans.

But only one had a QB running a zone read that would freeze the hell out of the defenders for that critical second. That helped Henry tremendously - as would other forms of play action - but Travis' season was launched last year in Week 5 against the Colts when teams started having to worry more about who had the ball, #10 or #20.

Both have had trouble staying healthy at times. Both have had fumbling problems at times. Both can run and catch and have workhorse potential. Henry is 1 1/2 years younger. Both would be an upgrade over what we have now - but just like every other FA discussion here - you can't get stupid with the money for either of these guys. Green may have two years left... no five year deals for 25+ million with 10+ million in guarantees.

The problem is that the price tag for FA starting RBs - even second tier RBs - in the NFL isn't cheap.

What, 100 billion dollar contract?

To be honest though I have always liked Travis Henry until he went to the Titans. I still dont get why the Bills pulled a Casserly and drafted McGahee in the first, he proved to be no better than what they already had.

is everyone sure that lelie signed with the niners? I have'nt seen it anywhere and in the chronicle it said that the texans courted both lelie and green last night.
