Just a Thought

I was just thinking:
Why don't we keep David Carr this year and really work on our O-line. We all know that one key of succesful Olines is reps, so why not concentrate and solidify our oline with choices like Levi Brown, Justin blaylock, and a solid Center?
I thinki this could be a good idea for a couple of reasons:

1. We have to solidify our Oline. We have been saying for years how we need to do it, so lets do it.

2. David Carr: if Carr is our guy and we pay him all that $, shouldnt we at least protect the guy. He might not be the best guy, but I would rather see him earn his pay on the field than sitting on the bench after breaking something after our swiss cheese line lets someone through.

3. David Carr: if Carr is not our guy then lets build up our line so that the next guy doesnt become Carr 2.0. An o line takes time to mesh so lets put it together now, so that when our new QB gets here, he has to worry about learnign the system and not worrying about the pass rushers.

What are your thoughts?

To simplistic to understand.

i totally agree, cause if we get a new QB now, he will be ruined "like most say he is" just like Carr is, so what would be the point until we resolve or O-Line issues ?

exactly. If you want to get a new QB, why subject him to an inferior Oline. Build your Oline, then get your new QB.

I spent 10 hours working in a youth corrections facility. Saracsim and subtly escape me at this point!

If you have read any of my posts you would know I have been saying this until I'm blue in the face. Its nice for someone else to pick up on the fact. I have stated from day 1 that has been our problem, but management continues to ignore it. Oh, well, all I know is the O-line is another year older and there are not many young studs on it. I think we are really in very bad shape as far as the O-line is concerned.....

Make a three way trade with Andre Johnson. Net two solid guards and a TE.

Solid meaning two guys that can start 16 games without falling apart ( like Chandler's cousin Flanagan, 11 years and 2 full seasons... krikey ). The extra TE can make the team a primary Ace package and nullify the costs/need of a franchise LT. Draft a late round speedster WR out of SWAC.

Use TEs on the flats and middle, WRs primary stretch, TEs in the middle mixed with ZBS running game should do the trick and be within Carr's sphere of control.

Dave leads the new year's parade Jan 1 2008 for Houston's first winning season and postseason appearance in 15 years.

Trade Andre Johnson? OK, let me think about this for a minute.....

Better idea: let's trade Andre Johnson, Dunta Robinson and DeMeco Ryans to the New England Patriots so maybe they take it easy on us next year and not show the NFL how unbelievably underachieving our Texans are.

that IS pretty funny though. What if we also traded Mario Williams to the Titans for Kerry Collins? David can be a solid #4 QB behind Kerry Collins, the caveman from the GEICO commercials, and myself.

Great post.

We need to address OL and DB this offseason.

the difference though is you are getting nothing in return.

I am trading a guy that we are not really using to any great effect, nor can be that effective without a line. Two to three guys that can play 16 games solves more problems then it creates by losing one offensive option.

Trading Carr would not net you two to three journymen. Johnson could.

Here is an NPR interview with Michael Lewis' (the guy who wrote "Moneyball") book "The Blind Side" I came across yesterday. Of course I instantly thought of the Texans: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6241687

If you read the big stories about NFL football, you'll notice that some positions get a lot more attention than others: receivers, quarterbacks and running backs. Sometimes even menacing linebackers or brilliantly athletic cornerbacks get attention, too.

But Michael Lewis' new book about football, The Blind Side, makes a counterintuitive argument: that the pivotal position on a football team today is the offensive left tackle.

Through the story of Michael Oher, a top-notch football prospect with the rare qualities of a "perfect" offensive left tackle, The Blind Side traces how the position's importance has evolved, and how money has affected the game.

You blind supporters.....thats the problem! The Texans keeps him at QB every year and he doesn't produce whats so ever.:aikido: The team needs something new......a new producer!

yeah yeah alles klar. No harm, no foul.

The trade idea stands as valid though ( as far as offseason talk goes ) after looking at the salary chart. Johnson is signed until 2008. IF a trade for Carr is valid for salary cap reasons then Johnson should be also.

you gotta admit, David Carr backing up me and the caveman was pretty good.
Can we give a team money and David Carr? Just asking.

I looked at this book before.

http://sabermetricresearch.blogspot.com/2006/09/michael-lewis-and-blind-side-are-left.html

Up until the NFL got free agency, the members of the offensive line, left tackle included, were largely anonymous. Their salaries were modest. In 1987, with quarterbacks earning some $2 million per year, Bengals left tackle Anthony Munoz, whom “people were saying … might just be the greatest offensive lineman in history,” asked for $500,000. He was told “that there was no lineman alive who was worth that much.”

Then, after the 1992 season, free agency came to the NFL. Immediately, several linemen are signed for $1.5 million to $2 million, players “no one had ever heard of.” NFL insiders are “baffled” and think the linemen aren’t worth the money. Then, “the only free agent A-list left tackle,” Will Wolford, signs a deal with the Colts that guarantees him that for the duration of the three-year contract, he’ll be the highest paid player on the team.

Why? Bill Polian, who later became Colts GM, says it was “for the simple reason that he shut down Lawrence Taylor in the Super Bowl.” Taylor was the feared Giants linebacker who ended Joe Theismann’s career with a leg-breaking blind-side sack in 1985.

By 2005, the left tackle was the second-highest paid position in the NFL, after quarterback.

unfortunately though where Will Wolford went, it did not translate into stellar passing games or instant success.

1992 Bills 11-5 3600 yards passing Kelly QB
1993 Bills 12-4 3500 yards passing Kelly QB

1992 Colts 9-7 3500 yards passing George QB
1993 Colts 4-12 3600 yards passing George QB

1994 and 95 the passing game of the Colts trailed off with Jim Harbaugh in the pocket.

1996-98 he ends up with the Steelers and another set of crappy QBs in Stewart and Tomcsack. Here their passing game hovers around the bottom of the league ( in yards per attempt, TDs, yards, att, cmps, etc )

although the Steelers did make the playoffs a couple of times, but mostly on running the ball.

What are your thoughts?

Although I agree that we should work to improve our line, I don't agree with the assertion that we have one of the worst lines in the league. I don't believe our line is anything other than slightly below average.

I don't believe that the poor performance in the passing game is a direct result of how badly our line performed. In the games I watched (and I watched all of them), I didn't see the line getting pantsed like it did in 2002 and 2005. I saw that Carr usually had plenty of time but didn't take advantage of it. We gave up some sacks because of mistakes by the line but we also gave up quite a few sacks because of indecision and misreads by the QB. We were already 23rd out of 32 teams, if we reduce the sacks created by bad QB play, we're right near the middle of the league in terms of sacks and the line looks a whole lot better.

So, why not do something to improve the position that's holding us back? And, to me, that's the QB position.

With that said, I have abolutely no problem drafting Levi Brown with the first pick. I'd love if we could pick up Kalil but I don't think he'll still be there for us in the 2nd. If Kubiak/Smith think that Carr is our best option this year, fine. I don't agree but they know a lot more about it than I do and I trust them. But honestly, I can't imagine that we couldn't get better performance out of some backup somewhere than what we got with David.

but everyone knows Sage is the savior here and the Titan game proved it

See this is the stuff that drives me nuts on here. I haven't seen many say that Rosenfels is the answer but considering QB is one of the most important positions in any sports, it is nice to see how others react to similar situations. People are lying if they didn't see a difference in pocket presence between Rosenfels and Carr. Does that make him a stud? No. It just makes him a case study that some guys can get it done without a perfect line. How can anyone not watch the lines of Dallas and Tenn this year and not see how a QB with a different set of skills makes a difference. The minute people actually start watching football games and see how QBs react in the pocket the minute they will realize that the line and QB BOTH contribute to the problems AND successes. People generalizing and saying that the next guy will fail automatically just don't watch enough football. Considering a QB in one play must call the play, look over the defense, check coverages, audible if necessary, play fake, look off receivers, make the right read, etc, etc, lends to the argument that some guys might be able to process it and pull it off better than others. You can improve the line AND improve the man at the trigger. It isn't a sin.

Can't hurt, why not.....

we just better score more than 21 points a game. I believe that Kubiaks offense was designed to do just that.... but we were lacking the trigger man, and to a lesser extent, the running game....

But hey..... whatever it takes.

So.... let's trade a player who has value for three players(individually of lesser value than the one we traded) to protect a player with no value...

You know I'm not a smart man... But this looks like the dumbest idea I've ever seen.

It's like, I've got $500. I'll give it to you in return for your magic beans. I'll plant those magic beans on my property. the beans of course will grow, raising the value of my property, so I then sell my property for $500.

:ok:

The problem is according to Kubiak he doesn't allow his QB to audible and check off. He seems to want a robot and that's not David's strength.

I would rather see us trade up to the number one overall, pick Kolb and then turn around and issue a public apology for not drafting Young, before seeing Quinn in a Texan Uni.

Brady Quinn doesn't ask you questions, he stares at you until he gets the answers he wants.

not so fast there trigger.

The original post is that we are going to keep Carr to make him worth it. That's the premise or axiom that I have to work with here.

I then have to deduce from that axiom that the line is going to increase Carr's value. Increase the line's worth, increases Carr's value.

Carr's value is only zero or nothing with a shoddy line and a good WR.

A good line will increase the running game and the QB at the cost of decreased performance at WR.

that's a two for one deal. And really a three for one when you consider a good line will increase TOP that will increase the performance of the defense.

And for our opening day halftime show, we can bring in the winner of the Westminster Dog Show to attempt a 50-yard field goal.

Well people wanted Kubiak and keep claiming the coach knows best......I mean if the guy is even involved in trade talks it leads me to believe that there is doubt in Smith and Kubiak's mind that they can get the consistency they want. As I explained alot goes into being the QB and maybe they see something that isn't "clicking." Good Lord knows alot of us think we do.:)

Makes sense to who ?

What if this nice little experiment does'nt work ... any body give it better than 50% that it does . Then what another season down the drain .

I guess when you guys go fishing you sit there for days ... not changing lures , location , or even recasting ... you just sit there because it good bait it's got to work .

I posted David Carr's 2002 Senior bowl game day diary somewhere .

He talks about the game ... I'll talk about his 3 series .

1st ball gets knocked down by Ryan Sims a DT drive killed .

2nd he gets sacked twice ... drive ends .

3rd series nothing much punt .

Well ... he never gets back into the game because Rohan Davey and Patrick Ramsey accounted for 5 tds between them and the South score 41 points .

Hey he had a good week of practice though ... so whats changed .

Ahh yes, and we all know how Rohan Davey and Patrick Ramsey are budding stars in the league. Texans should've made note of that during their 2002 draft evaluations. Oh well....

I hope we can get a new QB(but not Jake the Fake) and I wish DC the best somewhere else. I just don't want to have the new guy take the same pounding for the same reason. Geez...If you're not dogging Carr on this board, you're treated like a "global warming" denier.

I try to watch all the games and have my favorite players but it's a business first .

The business is to win a SB and I think the defense has the young talent for a foundation to build upon . The offense has AJ and ?

When people talk about how inept the front office and coaching was they're right and Carr may be proof of both .

:aikido:

I think Kurt Warner was thrown behind the worst offensive line this year. Kept getting his clocked cleaned, so the nice people of Arizona sat him down, gave him a break, and let the young rookie take the licks...

Or Maybe it's Aaron Brooks who was put behind the worst offensive line this year. The nice people of Oakland took him out of the game, and let the young Mr. Walther take a few shots...

Although I'm sure Dante Cullpepper thought he was playing behind the worst line in the league.. The nice people of Miami let him sit down for a little while, as to not get his brain bashed in.

Next to Oakland, Detroit gave up more sacks than anyone else in the league. But not too many people realize how bad their offensive line is, because their QB threw for 4000 yards, & 21 TDs.

Cleveland gave up 54 sacks this year. It's only his second year in the league, & his numbers are better than a certain #1 overall QB's second years numbers. But for some reason, all the talent experts on this board can clearly see that Frye is not the answer at QB, & believe the Browns should draft "hometown hero" Brady Quinn. This is a second year player, 2500 yards, 64% completions, a 72 passer rating, 10 TDs... but he's not the answer. Despite being sacked 54 times, in 13 games.

In his second year, our guy threw for 2013 yards, 9 TDs, less than 60% completion percentage, and a 69 passer rating despite only being sacked 15 times, in 11 games. But we don't have enough information to pass judgement on him.

But Charlie Frye is clearly not the answer.

come on now Docbar, let's not mix global warming denier in there. Or we might have to start a Support Docbar thread.

You can say the same thing about the OL. I have a couple of favorite players, but NONE are on offense. I can think of several WR I'd take over AJ. Of course that might be different if AJ played for a better team. And I agre100% about the FO and coaching defining Carr's biggest problems.

..Speaking of Rohan....he's an UFA from AZ this year....i'd kind of like to see him as our QB project instead of drafting one. A few years under his belt even if it's been in AZ. Could come relatively cheap too.
