New Orleans is out of the running--Houston is in the running:

Atlanta, Houston, Miami and Tampa Bay, Fla., were named finalists for the 2009 Super Bowl, league sources said. An official announcement from the league is expected today.

Formal Super Bowl presentations for 2009 will be made at meetings next May, followed by a vote by owners.

Four cities named finalists for Super Bowl XLIII

(Dec. 9, 2004) -- At a league meeting in Atlanta on Dec. 8, the NFL's Super Bowl Committee recommended four cities as finalists for Super Bowl XLIII in February of 2009.

The finalists are Atlanta, Houston, Miami and Tampa Bay. One of those four cities will be named as the host at a meeting of league owners in May 2005.

I think we are a lock...the other one's amenities are nowhere near ours.

Super Bowl XLII, Glendale, Ariz., 2008

I don't see them awarding the Super Bowl to Miami two out of three years, and I've heard that the NFL was not impressed with Atlanta the two years they had the Super Bowl there. I figure our only challenge would be Tampa who hosted Super Bowl XXXV.

not that it was not obvious, but this confirms the saints are leaving NO. NO is a big-time party town and the league won't turn down a chance for the SB there. so, NO to LA- mabe we can have a contest to guess the nickname?

No what it confirms is that the league (a) doesn't like uncertainty, i.e. the chance that a team might not have a home where the SB is and (b) that they want a team in NO and are giving the Saints a bargaining stick--keep us here or you will never get a SB again.

And it is interesting to see that they will have had at least 8 Super Bowls without one bieng in New Orleans.

Previous New Orleans Super Bowls:

2002 Super Bowl XXXVI
1997 Super Bowl XXXI
1990 Super Bowl XXIV
1986 Super Bowl XX
1981 Super Bowl XV
1978 Super Bowl XII
1975 Super Bowl IX
1972 Super Bowl XI
1970 Super Bowl IV

The longest previous span was 6 Super Bowls (25-30) between New Orleans games.

This could be the NFL's way to encourage the city and state to give in to the Superdome improvements by saying the Superdome is no longer good enough for the Super Bowl, or the NFL's way to encourage the Saints to move to Los Angeles. Take your pick.

The finalists are Atlanta, Houston, Miami and Tampa Bay. One of those four cities will be named as the host at a meeting of league owners in May 2005.

For the first time, this year's game will be played at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. Over the next three years, the Super Bowl will take place in Detroit (2006 -- Super Bowl XL), Miami (2007 -- Super Bowl XLI) and Arizona (2008 -- Super Bowl XLII).

Other cities who have hosted a Super Bowl: New Orleans (9: Tulane Stadium 3, Louisiana Superdome 6); Miami (8 times: Orange Bowl 5, Pro Player Stadium [formerly Joe Robbie Stadium] 3); Los Angeles (7: Los Angeles Coliseum 2, Rose Bowl 5); Tampa Bay (3); San Diego (3); Atlanta (2); Houston (2); Arizona (1); Detroit (1); Minneapolis (1); Stanford (1).

Looks like we did a great job with the last one, and are on the track to have another. Nice job Houston!

They'll save a lot of trees when the Saints move to L.A.

Since their games will be played in a stadium that's three quarters empty fewer people will need paper bags to cover their faces than in New Orleans.

And I like the name Saints too. Let them keep it unless of course New Orleans has an issue with it and can find a way to hang onto the name ala Cleveland and the Browns. If not then it fits L.A. perfectly. Right now they've got the Lakers, Clippers, and Dodgers out there and every one of those names came from somewhere else without being changed once the team arrived in L.A. so keeping "Saints" fits. It just seems natural.

I think any connection between the name and the city's "hispanic catholic origins" though is a bad thing. It actually might make the Saints look like they belong there which is something that none of the other teams have to worry about.

Saints in the City of Angels? :hmmm:

Could be as well possible as the pressure by the NFL on the City council. I follow Atlanta quite closely and the NFC South, and i can't imagine them disrupting the NFC South and bringing the Saints to L.A.

But if money talks, even saints walk. :hmmm:

If i compare Reliant Stadiu and the Georgia Dome, you actually would be the winner. If it comes to the surrounding city it's close. I'm not sure if the NFL officials disliked the two Bowls in Atlanta. Did they?

Well, there was the Ray Lewis incident. Not Atlanta's fault, but the story will come up if the Super Bowl returns.

Also one of their SB's (I think the first) was I think 33 degrees and sleeting during the morning of the game. Unusual maybe but doesn't leave a great impression.

For a winter event, we are better than Atlanta weather wise. I lived and worked there for a year, and while I certainly liked Atlanta, they have ice storms in the winter like N.Texas does and it can get cold in Atlanta. The SB
5 years ago played between the Titans and Rams(it was that SB rarity, a great game like here this year), they had a horrific ice storm. Miami is awesome competition for us (we can't compete with such attractions as
South Beach), but I think they are already scheduled to have a SB between now and then. I don't know much about Tampa, but hear it is really nice.
Houston is coming on as a very appealing convention city which, amoung
other things, is kinda what a SB is similar in the sense of what attributes
the host city needs . The new hotel downtown, which is attached to the convention center is a big plus for us and a reason we are now taking future convention business away from Dallas. And of course, with Continental Airlines at Bush and Southwest at Hobby, we have tremendous air service throughout the country and internationaly.

Hmmm.. maybe by then we'll have the 8th wonder turned into the hotel / casino / convention center for a walk to the bowl. :hmmm:

If you believe John McClain. I've heard him say more than once that there were some owners in the league who would be happy if they never returned to Atlanta.

LA Rams or the LA Raiders. HA HA! Sorry I had to let that out. I think it would be cool to have a SB in Houston again. Hopfully this time the people who are making the half time entertainment won't find anyone wanting to expose themselves. :hmmm: Well there's plenty of time to think about it.
