Does Carr really want to stay a Texan?

Since I am from California and have been watching David Carr's carreer there at Houston from the beginning I have come to the conclusion that he really doesn't want to be there. His play this last season kind of gave me that impression when you all had those injuries to your o-line.Plus not picking up Bush for whom he lobbied for must have given him the impression the team wasn't that seriuos about improving.I know he said he wants to stay but his body language and desire say something else. But in all this what do you say? Please keep from using to much foul language in your response.

I think he wants to stay here and be a part of the upcoming success with the team that drafted him. We haven't heard otherwise, and his brother tells us that he wants to stay a Houston Texan. I have no reason to doubt it.

I think David is just tired of being killed every Sunday. There comes a point that a man must surrender to the larger forces at hand. I saw a different Carr at the beginning of the year. He looked confident, poised in the pocket and he trusted the o-line. After Spencer went down, because Ron Dayne ran him over, David started getting the crap knocked out of him again. This is when David started missing his reads, feeling phantom pressure, and tucking the ball for the impending sack.

It is hard to maintain a positive attitude when you are constantly getting the snot knocked out of you. Can we blame the o-line exclusively? No. Can we blame David exclusively? No. Can we blame the Coaching Staff exclusively? No. There are many aspects of the Texans offense that need to be corrected before any QB will feel safe behind our line and in our scheme.

I for one would like to see David stay. The first year in a new offense under a shaky first year o-line with a completely different scheme is hard to adjust to. I don't know many people that can create miracles with that. Give him a good o-line and better understanding of the play calling, and hell, lets throw in a play making running back... then you will see the reason he was picked #1 in 2002.

And for you haters, please don't talk to me about how several other new coaches, (Saints), were able to make it to the playoffs. Those coaches were working their schemes more around the talent that was there. Kubiak wants his system to work his way. He just doesn't have all the correct players for it yet.

Go Texans!

That's always a good idea.

Yeah, I'd like to hear Carr come out and say he wants to be here. As you said, his body language at the end of the season looked less than enthusiastic. Not that Carr was the only player who seemed to be dragging tail. I don't know if that would make a difference in staying or going, but at least we would know how David feels.

great post...rep your way!

i wouldn't be surprised if david wanted to get out.
Me either. Mediocre protection for five years. Plus the fan support is horrible, cheering for the QB of an opposing team one whole game, calling for his head after the Dom Capers era, etc...
I think David would be happier somewhere else. I don't see Plummer, Sage or a rookie as the solution though. It is a real Catch-22.

Props to you, I couldn't have said it better myself. I think the team is going great places in the near future, I like the coaches we have in place, and I am pretty sure at this point anyway, that I really like Rick Smith.

How sad it would be if David, after 5 years of loyalty, and getting pounded and bouncing back, that he would be traded when the team is finally going to make it.

Call me a homer, or whatever, but that is how I feel. This team can win with David.

I think he definitely wants to be here, however, I wouldn't blame him if he didn't. Did you see his body language after we beat the Colts??? I still think he's full of enthusiasm, amidst all of the negativity surrounding him.

Go Texans

I don't know if David wants to stay here, but I'll bet Melody would like nothing better than to get the f... out of Dodge!

Uh, I just look at Texans TV. Carr has a press release out saying he wants to be here.

He seems okay with everything to me. He doesn't want to lose and wants to win.

That's right after the season ( the Texan season ), so I am not sure what else could be expected of him as far as saying something.

Didn't Spencer go down in the first half of the second game? If so, Carr didn't look that great for that long by your analysis.

As for your comment regarding surrendering to "larger forces", then Carr probably shouldn't be a QB in the NFL.

There are many guys that would do almost anything to have as many chances Carr has had to prove himself. Historically, no one has gotten as many chances as Carr.

I agree with your overall point that Carr hasn't had the best help in regards to play and talent around him. But, that is part of the job description of an NFL QB. I don't judge Carr for not making a playoff push, but for playing at level that most other backup NFL QB's could do for a lot less money and we wouldn't have had to "surrender" a #1 draft pick and pass on Julius Peppers.

It is inexcuseable that the offense can't run the two-minute or sustain a long meaningful drive in crunch time. Then when the offense does does not do that and the defense gives up the big play, the defense is blamed. Example, see the Titans game at home.

I am sure Carr would be better if the O line was better, unfortunately, our defense is worse then our offense. With that fact looking you in the face everyday, Kubiak needs to stop the worst part of the team first. As for the o-line, I have posted for over a year now that, that is where the offense begins, not with QB, pick up a good left tackle, and the rest of the team will look better, including Carr. 6 & 10, is better, although I was not satisfied, and if we let evryone compete for their jobs, the team will be better in 2007.
As to what Carr wants, Santa told me personally, IT was a healthy Spencer at LT.

Have faith.

David for the most part always spouts the company line; I doubt if he were that unhappy he'd make that big a deal out of it. It sounds like whining when you make millions and complain.

I have seen him some months back on TV and he did say he was ready for anything whether that be staying with the team or going elsewhere.

He's a pro athlete. They rarely stay in the same place for a whole career and I imagine he'd be fine either way.

Personally I think he's going to be elsewhere next year.

I think he wants to stay, but he wants more help from the organization on the offensive side of the ball badly. I don't know if you call saying that you would like to play with a guy once or twice in the media "lobbying" (Ask Ray Lewis about Lobbying for a certain player!) but i think a HUGE part of him wanting to stay is to prove to some of the fans that boo him on Sundays that he can play. Yeah, he's a choir boy by Jeff George standards so you won't see him lashing out quite as badly, but he's also a professional athlete, who by nature, on that level, SHOULD love to compete.

If i were in his shoes though, I'd want to be traded. I say this b/c IMO, with what happened last year in the draft, & knowing how the fans felt about VY & you then, you just have to sense that the fans have their pens out & are ready to start the writing on the wall. I'd just want to cut ties & see about repairing my career elsewhere.

I am sure Carr would be better if the O line was better, unfortunately, our defense is worse then our offense.

How is our defense worse than our offense? Because they are always on the field when the offense can't get the job done.

If I were Carr, I'd cut and run. The media has pretty much just run him out of town all the while stating that we don't have playmakers, we don't have a solid running game, and our pass protection is horrible. They do all of this because of the manlove for Vince Young. The win by the Titans in overtime simply accelerated their hatred for Carr with old tried and true "nanny nanny nanny, I told you you should have picked our favorite Vince Young." All the while neglecting the fact that Reggie Bush had just as good a year as a part time player and was one of the positions that we needed to draft for.

Go David.....no Run David..to the team that does the things to be successful, I wish you best of luck. I think of you when we start having our QB controversy in week 4.

I had a job one time where my supervisor was a Doctors wife - what a Bitzz !
I finally managed to find something else so I could quit the existing job and I
then felt that the "weight of the world" had been lifted from my shoulders.
Brand new start, and it was exactly what I needed.
I really feel like David Carr would like to make the same kind of change. Not
that Kubiak is a Bitzz, but being the Texans QB might be for DC.
And if he does I will be his fan and the fan of his new team, assuming its not
Jacksonville. Somehow I don't think the Colts or Titans are looking for a QB right now.
And god knows the Texans fans and organization need a new start in the QB department. Especially with the complication of Carr vs VY which will be with
us as long as Carr is.
Yep, all parties concerned need a new start.

I don't think so. Did you watch the second half of the season? The D was by far better than the offense. Our Dline was predominantly made up of "street free agents" and still managed to improve our defensive rankings from dead last to just below mid-pack. Throughout the season the defense made progress while the offense regressed. Scoring 16.7 a game ain't going to cut it. Having said that, I'd still like for us to continue building the D through the draft. Oline can be solidified in the later rounds or through FA. IMO, the addition of an average QB would give us a better chance of reaching the .500mark, if not our first winning season. If changes aren't made at the QB position we'll continue to be well below average in scoring.

I'd say just about everyone seemed to be dragging tail. Losing does that to you. For that matter, if I was Carr, I'm not sure I'd want to play for a city full of loud mouthed know-it-alls who are blaming him for everything gone wrong this side of JFK's assassination. Then again maybe the other part of me thinks that I'd want to play well just to prove my detractors wrong and because I'd believe that I can get the job done here.

Regardless of how you feel about DC, this has to be one of the most absurd statements I have read on this board (which is saying a bunch btw). So on top of everything thing else...you think David made the Texans give him a contract extension, made Kubiak say that he could make the offense go with him as our QB and made Casserly, McNair and Kubiak pass on VY.

At least be fair about who you point the finger at regarding the VY decision. This same logic would say that it is Mario's fault or Reggie's fault if we had taken him instead of VY.

And the answer to your question is ... a bunch of people care, including me, if our starting QB wants to still be on the team or prefers to start over somewhere else.

Well said. IMO Carr is a competitor who has had the snot knocked out of him as some one else said. He will get paid for 2 more years by someone; but I think he wants to show people and his team what they can do. All QBs want to compete as do all players. Will be interesting to see what happens if the Oline is healthy and we come up with a running game that scores a TD occasionally. Every player on the team could have been better. Yes, even Demeco. This points to a good 2007!

Dayne "ran over" Spencer because he got pushed into the backfield and there was no way Dayne was going to make a cut that quickly. The truth is that our running game stunk at that time even with all of our starters healthy. Spencer was good at pass pro but the entire line was being handled on running plays.

That is why I am one of the few people who thinks that Carr should stay. Partly because he could get better with another year in Kubiak's system (and some competition). Partly because I don't think we'll get enough value in a trade. And partly because I don't see how another QB with the same line is going to do any better. The issue to me is consistancy. The guys we have can get it done, they just don't do it every down. Nor do they stay healthy for the whole season. If you took the passing game of the first half of the season and added it to the running game of the second half of the season, we would have won at least half of the games we played.

:drunk: <----This Smiley tells me someting about the folk' on this baord.

I don't think any other smiley gets this much face time.

I wish I had the game film to just outright say you're wrong, but since I don't, I will settle for: I think you're wrong.

I don't have access to the game film with Spencer, but I don't think he was being pushed back.

And I also don't think our line was doing that poorly on run blocking. In fact I think that run blocking has always been a strong point for us.

You can take him back over there in California if you want him. Just give us a third round pick and we will call it even! Good luck.

David Carr ruined our chances of getting Vince Young.

No he didn't. But it was stupid to not pick Bush, much less Young. We need excitement, a spark. And they would have given it. Even if we still didn't win any more games. Sometimes we fans need to take off our "Houston Love Glasses" and get real. Along with winning games, football is entertainment. And for so many years now Houston has been about as boring as a team can get, along with Detroit, the Raiders, Cleveland, etc.

Regardless if Carr plays for the Texans or some other team, he will be fighting for a job and have no fewer than 8 games or so to prove himself. His career is really on the line now, which is way over due.

Despite the situation in Houston, Carr's best bet is probably in Houston. Moving to a new city, learning a new system, and so and so will be a lot for him to do and overcome.

Go Texans!
AMEN!!! I couldn't have said it better myself!!!!

I agree that the Texans have been almost unwatchable for much of their history. But, how many losing teams are entertaining? Show me a winning team, and I'll show you some entertainment.

Sorry folks, the primadonna QB needs a new home. He has been coddled and pampered for 5 long years.
He's been a detriment to the team's success.
He and his agent made out like bandits here in Houston.
Good luck to him wherever he goes, he will be a career backup QB from here on out with his next team(s), unless he retires of course.
His departure alone is a step up for this franchise.
Good riddance.

This will just be another bad move among many. Of course he won't be a career backup. Who acquires him is going to start him next season. Quit whining.

Well.... that's one way to look at it. It's funny how you mention Spencer going down as when all "this" started happening.

Dwight Freeney had no sacks when Spencer was in the game. He had 0 sacks after Spencer went down.

The Skins recorded one sack. Salaam didn't give it up.

Against Miami....... Jason Taylor didn't get none, till Bedell filled in for Salaam, and Kubiak begged Salaam to come back in & play hurt.

Dallas?? I thought Demarcus Ware was supposed to be a bad maama jaama??

Jacksonville?? Yeah, they were hurt, so it doesn't count.

Tennessee?? This is where I think Salaam's performance started falling off. I don't think he ever fully recovered, but we shouldn't have expected him to. If only we'd have thought far enough ahead, & kept Wand(who played better than Spencer in the Preseason).

His play was spotty for a few games........ I won't lie. But Freeney turned in another goose egg after round 2, so he can't be all that bad.

Pitts is the only player who has played on the O-Line all 5 seasons of the Texans existence. as LT, and as LG. so that means we've had multiple LTs, multiple LGs, Multiple Centers, multiple RGs, & multiple RTs.

We are on our second head coach.... third OC.. We've gone through a dozen WRs, half a dozen tightends, a dozen RBs,

same results.
I for one would like to see David stay. The first year in a new offense under a shaky first year o-line with a completely different scheme is hard to adjust to.
Good point..... I'll give you that.

You can watch him, and it is easy to see he doesn't recognize mismatches, situations, and defenses in general. Give him all that other stuff, and he still won't recognize mismatches, situations, and defenses.

Some guys can't translate their college success to the NFL. To date, David has failed to do so.
And for you haters, please don't talk to me about how several other new coaches, (Saints), were able to make it to the playoffs. So what kind of system would be David Carr friendly??

Along with a whole host of other things, most of which don't have ^%&* to do with him. If the next guy who comes in here fails much like DC did, What are people going to say then?

He's been a trooper in terms of saying all the right things.

Gotta give him credit for being positive all these years.

And that might be the reason another team would acquire him: He's loyal to the team, he won't bad-mouth the players, staff, etc.

He was thrown onto the worst-built expansion team in NFL history if you want my opinion. We resembled a team that you might have seend during the NFL strike days so long ago. And for that, he has suffered. Any QB would have suffered IMO.

And, once again, that might be why a team would want him: He might do a 180 and become a better QB because of all the adveristy he's faced.

I'm not happy with his performance last season. I felt he missed the mark. Maybe a change of scenery is what he needs. And I don't think any of us outside of his family will know if that's what he wants or not. He's been pretty good about not saying things that would rock the boat.

don't worry, his brother runs his mouth enough for the both of them

I think Carr is starting to come to the conclusion that perhaps it would be better off if he went elsewhere. The fans are sick of him and he's sick of not getting the all-star supporting cast that he needs to be successful. If he can go to a team with a pro-bowl OL, elite RB, and a pair of top flight WR he'll prove to everyone that he's capable of playing on a Trent Dilfer/Rex Grossman level.

The problem isn't Carr, it's his contract.

If he made less money we'd have more to spend on all this talent he needs.

That's what I've been wondering. If he restructured to be more "game manager" level vs. current "team carrier" level, would these discussions and multiple threads exist? Would the discussion be more, "well, he's making the average money, so we could have him compete for starter, try him one more year, try another QB while he mentally recoups 5 years of turf eating..." etc.

Flip side, if you already had the contract signed and money coming - would you restructure? Guess it depends on how much he wants to remain here and if he really wants to believe that he wants to be a part of the soon coming team upswing.
