Texans & 8th pick. History tells me......OL

What # did Huff go last year. Funny how before Huff, they were getting beat down in the air and then after Huff was drafted that all stopped. I would like to see us go DB if a guy like Peterson is not there.

I can see DB or OL but I also am a believer in BPA for a bad team. So if there isn't an OLineman that grades out unbelievably of a cover guy who you have to have I'd keep looking. In other words don't take the next best O-lineman if he is graded as a mid to late rounder just because of need.

I wouldn't mind picking an LT at #8 if there was one there. IMO, there isn't really any Oline talent this year that would justify being picked at #8. Thomas is going in the top five. After him there's slim pickens until the second to mid-rounds.:shades:

If AP is not there @ 8
and none of the faves (thomas for example) drop, why should we not look for trade possibilites for a veteran player? All I seem to read is trade down for draft picks. I understand getting 2 picks for one but usually less quality goes with lower picks.
 
I wouldn't mind a trade down at all, hopefully top 16.

the only thing is it will be a lot harder to trade down if AP is gone. Trading down is easier when a good player falls to you ...like maybe Quinn this year?!

Options:

1) Adrian Peterson
2) Alan Branch
3a)LaRon Landry
3b)Levi Brown
4) Leon Hall

One of those guys will be the Texans #8 pick. At this point (although it's early) I think Peterson & Branch will be gone. So then it comes down to Landry, Brown, & Hall. And who we draft could easily be determined by the combine.

And for what's it's worth I'd be happy with any one of those players.

But in response to the thread I don't think you lean any one position. I think you take the BPA... especially in the Texans case with so many holes...

In my view, it would go something like this:
1. AP
2 Jammall Anderson
3. Levi Brown
4. Okoye
5.Landry/Nellson

I think that unless you get a really great talent at S (Reed, Polumalu- also, keep in mind both those guys are SS, not FS), that position dosnt have that big of a drop off from great to good, meaning we can get by with an average player that dosnt make mistakes, as long as there is enough talent elsewhere (D-line and CB's).

My ideal offseason is looking something like this.
Trade a 3rd round pick to the Lions for Bly (CB)
Sign Ken Hamlin (FS)
Draft AP at 8 if available, if not go in descending order as listed above
Draft Earl Everret OLB in the second
Sign Michael Lewis SS
Sign Luke Petigout, OT


That would fix the major whole that is our defensive backfield with two former Pro Bowlers who have something to prove with new teams, but shouldnt cost too much. Also, it would either give us a playmaker in AP, dominant pass rush in Andersson, or really revamp the tackle position with Brown (draft someone else if we get Petigout). Replacing Shante Orr should also be a pretty high priority at OLB, hence Earl Everret.

Obviously, I dont expect all of this to happen, just laying out what would be my plan if I was the one making decisions.
 
1) I would love AP to fall to us but I really don't think it will happen.
2) If he does...me personally would take him.
3) Here's another interesting scenario....

AP falls to us, Green Bay loves him, wants to give us their 1st and 2nd rd this year for him. here's a mock from nfl draft countdown that i check a lot. if the picks happen to fall like that- this is what i'd do and just think about or defense.

1. Patrick Willis for SAM.
2a. Chris Houston for CB.
2b. Brandon Meriweather for FS.

if we grab a FA defensive tackle in the offseason...that would be a top ten defense without a question.

I like AP a lot and really hope we get him but with how our team is...i think Patrick Willis and Bandon meriweather would make a bigger impact. We still need to do some Oline work and that'd be a great start for next season. 2008 draft class of RB's is amazing.....just something to think about.
 
I'm not against picking the BPA. Actually with the 8th pick that's probably the way to go. It just seems like the OL guys that were picked were very solid for years. Any player is going to be a gamble. I would really prefer trading down a few spots and picking up a couple of draft picks.

personally, i think P willis and Demeco on the same LB corps should be illegal. i have a feeling that Willis is going to shoot up come combine time...just a hunch. still, i wouldn't be opposed to that idea at all.

Let's reach for an offensive lineman. That is the smart move.

Pre-combine has Thomas as top 5 at the worst, and no other offensive lineman in the top 10. So what are you saying we should do? Reach?

Now if Levi Brown proves to be a solid top 10 pick, I am ok with that pick at 8. Keep and eye on his combine workout, short shuttle mainly.

No, I didn't say we "reach" for OL, that is not a smart move. My point was just about all the OL picked at 8 going back to '82 were solid picks and had good careers. Just looking at it from a historical perspective.

As for the prospects, it would be great if Thomas fell to us. I was thinking of Levi Brown, or even Ben Grubs if he grades out well after the combine.

In all honesty, I would like to find someone to trade down with and aquire some draft picks. I've liked that idea going back to the Texans first draft.
