Coleman placed on IR

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans announced today that they have placed their sixth player, FS Marcus Coleman (shoulder), on the Reserve/Injured list. S Jammal Lord will be elevated from the practice squad to take Coleman's roster spot.
Great....just the wonderful news we needed as we go against the #1 passing offense in the NFL.

Get better Marcus!

Holly Sheet! Just what we need with Payten coming to town. Does anyone know what happened? I didn't hear anything about an injury to Coleman until now. Our season is going down the drain. :thud:

From my guess, that nagging shoulder injury must have been a tear...otherwise they wouldn't have placed him on the IR.

This is bad news....

That sheet eating grin on Peyton Manning's face just got a lot sheetier. :thud:

This isn't as bad as it might have been earlier in the year. Think about the first few weeks when Dunta was really, really green. McCree is going to be fine back there. At least as "fine" as Coleman would have been with Manning and the Colts touchdown machine coming to town.

McCree will fill in fine and thats another young player with a high motor coming onto the rostor. The more we can get to play like that the better. I doubt Lord is going to get anything more than special teams play but he did well there during the preseason.

Man, what a bummer. Hopefully the Colts game won't be as bad as the turmoil in my gut about it.

I read on espn.com that Jammal Lord was activated from the practice squad to replace Coleman. Another rookie on defense.

Just heard on 610 that he is out for the year. It was a shocker b/c I didn't think he was injured.

My assumption is that he has one of those injuries that guys play thorugh until it becomes too bad.

...or that he has one of those injuries that guys play with until playoff hopes have completely gone down the drain...

He hurt it in the Packers game when tackling William Henderson. Maybe it didn't show on TV. He stayed down for a while after the hit.

It kept bothering him the last two weeks and they ordered an MRI on him yesterday.

Not that I'm happy Coleman got put on the IR, but i like to see backups come in. I forget his name, but the guy that should start for him has been on the practice squad all season long and i think it'd be great if he came out and had a big day kind of how nobodies from other teams come out and have good games against us (Mwelde Moore and the beaten up Titans).

Thats just the way i look at it, we could have another Ed Reed and not even know about it. Or he could just be some scrub but hopefully thats not the case.

That would be Jammal Lord. He played QB at Nebraska last year so he's still learning to play the position. He's athletic and had his moments in preseason. He's nowhere close to ready to start but you will see him on special teams.

McCree will start at FS. He is a capable replacement for Marcus.

We've actually been pretty lucky on injuries this year. Until this week anyway.

You never like to see starters go down but Polk and McCree are capable backups. It's nice having experienced depth for a change.

From the Chron:

Capers described Coleman's shoulder as "sliding out" a couple of times against the Jets. Coleman had been playing with a sprained shoulder suffered Nov. 21 against Green Bay.

Coleman was originally expected to be held out of practice today before returning Thursday. But he met with team doctors late Monday and was advised that continuing to play with the injury could complicate surgery, Capers said.

Efforts to reach Coleman were unsuccessful Tuesday night. He is expected to undergo surgery within the next two weeks.

"He became concerned about that," Capers said. "There was a chance he could do further damage."

Jason Simmons, who hasn't played since suffering a concussion Oct. 17, will start at free safety against the Colts. The Texans promoted rookie safety Jammal Lord, the former option quarterback at Nebraska, off the practice squad to fill Coleman's spot on the 53-man active roster. The Texans moved Lord to safety after drafting him in the sixth round.

....that went to the playoffs in their fourth year of existence.

The Chronic reports Jason Simmons will start at FS Sunday, not McCree. I wasn't sure he'd be ready but I know Capers really likes the guy because he's 'smart' in terms of calling the defensive sets.

Aj can correct me on this but I think Coleman's contract is up at the end of the year. Coleman didn't play bad this season, but we could be looking at our secondary for next season with these last few weeks. (given the size of Coleman's contract) if Simmons/McCree play good.

Stay tuned.
:hmmm:

Coleman got a three year contract extension for about $9.5 mil including a $5 mil signing bonus. What I am unclear about is whether this counted as the 1st year of the contract (I think it did) or the extension starts next year.

As aj said above the chronicle is reporting that Simmons will start at FS not McCree and that Polk will start at MLB not Wong. Setting aside the LB part, I thought McCree was better in coverage, but evidently Fangio/Capers feel like Simmons calls the defense better. I guess they didn't feel like we had the depth for substitution packages to replace Stevens with Simmons through that long dark period before picking up McCree.
