Awesome article. I loved every word of it (almost). If I were Rick Smith, and I could, I would follow his plan to the letter. The only thing I would change is:
1) Add an OLB through FA or in the 4th round. WR, and especially CB can wait with that plan.
2) Use some of that extra 6-8 million in cap space to pay off some of the extra dead money we will be allocating to next year by cutting Carr/Wiegart/Flannagan, etc
 
I've felt that Dunta needed to be a 2nd cornerback for some time now. Not that this validates it, but people are starting to realize that Dunta just isn't a complete shut down corner. Nate would be that guy. I'd still like to see Carr here for another year because realisticly the options at QB are slim. I'd pickup a solid interior lineman to start in place of (insert DT here) A game changing safety is a must, so that is almost as need a priority as a corner.

Drafting a LT in the 1st round is so 2002-2003-2004-2005-2006! But hey we might actually do it this time.
 
It is very hard to find stud CB and if some one is available in FA or draft then you grab him. CB position is our need position and there is no one better then Clements in this FA.
 
enjoyed the read. Supported my desire to land Nate and go with what we have at safety. I would go with what we have on Dline or grab one in 5th round. Also, I am tired of signing OT and moving to right side or guard. If a first round LT is not a solid pick, don't go there. I am still focusing on AP being avail @ 8. Shhh! Do not break my concentration.
 
That's a very entertaining and imagitive read. But the centerpiece of his
stradegy seems to be the Clements FA pickup, which is a great theory.
But for one thing, I don't think we have a prayer of getting the Buff CB.
He can probably get as much money as Houston can afford to pay him from
another team which is also a real playoff contender. I don't see how we can
compete with that combo ?

The only argument I have with this offseason scheme is that it contradicts what Kubes and the Texans have publicly said are the priorities, which is finding a new offensive playmaker and not relying on injured players. That means a new Running Back, which I think will be a major emphasis of FA, with the belief that AP just won't be there at #8. I see the Texans going after Ahman Green or Dominic Rhodes.

I also don't see the Texans picking up Merriweather, who has had off-the-field issues, mainly because the Texans don't take players with off-the-field issues. So instead of hiring Mahan, I see the Texans drafting Levi Brown in the first and Kalil/Datish in the second.

I also don't see Carr leaving. With a playmaker running back and a line of Brown - Pitts - Kalil - Weary - Winston, Carr now has every tool needed to play well. It's his defining year. I could see Plummer being brought in as a back-up or as spring competition, but that's it.

I thought Kubes said "playmakers" that does not have to be offensive. I can not see Carr & Plummer's salaries on team.

I won't mince words about whether the playmakers needed to be offensive or defensive. It's been too long since I heard and read the quotes.

I think if I understand the way the writer put it, Plummer is likely only 3-4 million next year, and Carr the same. I think it could be afforded, but a better question is would Plummer be willing to contend for a spot under Kubiak or be the guaranteed starting QB somewhere else.

I think #8 is way too high for Brown to be drafted. I we were to draft him I'd hope it would be if we traded back for and additional pick. I don't have a problem with the Meriweather pick as long as his past is the past. I also believe SLB should be addressed one way or another this offseason. I'm looking forward to the happenings this off season.:yes:
 
I don't understand why people think that Plummer who is due close $8,000,000 in 07' would renogiate his salary with Denver. Weiland admits in his manifesto fantasy that Denver will cut Plummer. This is very doubtful because there is at least a handful of teams wanting his services. Besides Denver and especially Shanahan is not going to let Plummer walk if he can get a 3rd or 4th RD pick or even a 5th RD that goes to a 2nd RD based on Plummer's playing time. Trading Carr ($4 mi due in 07) or cutting Carr ($2 mil in 07 and $2 mil in 08) and replacing him with Plummer is going to be a very expensive proposition. All this money to maintain the status quo? Time for a little reality check.
 
I just have a HARD time accepting that we'll pay big-bucks for a QB that lost favor on his team (Plummer) to a Rookie QB that we passed on last year.

It's bad enough we passed on 3 potentially great Pro-QB's in the 1st last year, but now we're gonna take the guys they replaced?!

So who is next....Volek/McNair & Warner?

On to other positions....Now that Dre' Bly is available...maybe we can look at him OR Clements (even though I am leaning to Clements)

Gotta be better than Petey starting (although I like him in Nickle & Dime packages...as mentioned in this article).

I don't like what the d-line, linebackers and especially running backs look like under that scenario.

The Nate Clements scenario is intriguing. Wasn't Clements on the Lance and Jon show a while back saying how he would like to play for Houston if the price were right? I think it is a part of the Jon Hoke podcast.
 
I think Keith Weiland is right on most accounts. I especially like his draft picks :shades: I'm even higher on Levi. he has been virtually untested in a Pro-style set playing @ Penn State at this point in time he is undervalued by most expect for NFL Pro Scouting Servies which have him ranked as the 6th prospect in the draft. Meriweather is a pure FS, very hard to find one this good, not sure if he will still be on the board but excellent choice if there (can also be used @ CB). I was really impressed with Tony Hunt @ the Senior Bowl, very solid all around back who is well versed in blocking and running downhill. after the 3rd rd. most likey in the 4th although I like Hill, lets target a QB to groom for the future, someone who will be ready to take over the reigns with a good OL already in place.

I would rather the Texans deceide to keep Carr however & eat his salary (its spent already) open up the position to Sage, draft a QB to develop & may the best man win. at the same time increase Carrs trade value to get fair trade value in return, then send him on the way & wish David well, the Texans own him that much anyway :winky:
 
The author of that piece has us picking Meriweather with the 33rd pick of the draft, i.e., the first pick of the second round. I assume that's a typo. If not, I wonder if he thinks Meriweather will still be on the board when we pick later in the second round with the 40th pick...
