Chargers fire shottenheimer..

stingray

Hall of Fame
just heard it on ESPN.. They lost cameron couple weeks ago and then Wade philips.. One of them was supposed to take over, now one is the coach at miami and the other at Dallas... Weird how this happened.

I have to say this would be next to crazy if they did this. Its no wonder Daddy Manning wouldn't let his child go out there.

The Rumor is fact.......Chirs Mortenson is reporting. Wow.......there must have been some serious friction between AJ Smith and Schottenheimer over the last week. Where in the world will the Chargers get a head coach now? Ron Rivera? The coaching wire looks pretty bare right now........

I'd like to think they'd leave the defense alone and go out and get a offensive minded coach though i'm not sure how you replace cam. If they knew they were going to fire him why did they not make sure they had cam locked up?

Or maybe Aj Smith was waiting for all the other jobs to be filled. He did'nt want Marty to be a headcoach anywhere this coming season...:stirpot:

Damn, who are the Chargers going to get?
Parsells ?
Yea, Marty and the GM, who hate each others guts for openers, must have really duked it out in the last few days ?
But its really a high compliment to the HC to have both his OC and DC
hired by other programs in the same offseason, especially those rated as high as Miami and the Cowboys.
I dunno, guess the GM and owner didn't see it that way ?

wow....that's kinda' crazy to fire a HC after such a great season. yeah, they lost in the playoffs, but 31 teams will always be losers every year. This makes me lose a little respect for the organization, to be honest.

Sources close to Marty Schottenheimer and the San Diego Chargers said the coach was fired by the team Monday, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported.

Schottenheimer and Chargers general manager A.J. Smith have been having disagreements over staffing after losing a number of assistants. Dean Spanos, the team president, told Schottenheimer on Monday that it wasn't going to work between him and Smith.

Three days after the Chargers melted down in a stunning 24-21 playoff loss to New England, Spanos decided that bringing Schottenheimer back for the final year of his contract gave San Diego its best chance to win.

Schottenheimer, though, declined the team's offer of a one-year extension for 2008 worth $4.5 million, with a $1 million buyout.

"Right now, I wasn't comfortable accepting it," Schottenheimer told the Associated Press shortly after the season. He would have earned more than $3 million in 2007.

With a regular-season record of 200-126-1 with Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington and San Diego, Schottenheimer is the most successful coach never to have reached the Super Bowl.

This is the stupidest crap I've ever heard. How the hell does a coach get fired after going 14-2, no wonder this team used to be the laughing stock of the NFL. Decisions like this will send them straight back to mediocrity, I'm sure LT is pissed.

From the above post, it sounds more like Shott declind his extension

No way to explain letting both coordinators go and then fire the HC right after. Is Charley in there somewhere pulling strings?

The thing that sucks for Marty is all the head coaching postions are filled, i mean i'm sure he would have found a landing spot at the start of the offseason, now he is going to take a defensive coordinator position for a year or take a year off and collect a check and pray the chargers don't win the superbowl the year after he was fired.

As for the Chargers wow, i don't think i've ever seen a team lose so much of its coaching staff at once. I mean the pats lost a few people but it took years.

Head coach, --- fired
offensive coordinator -- Dolphins Head coach
defensive coordinator -- Dallas Cowboys head coach
tight ends coach -- Offensive coordinator Cleveland
linebackers coach -- defensive coordinator San Francisco

i mean thats the position coach of Antonio Gates and Merriman, two of their best. each of them could have been promoted, either of the offensive or defensive coordinators could have been head coach. And there is no one out there thats a top level guy. Honestly Mike Sherman may be the best name on the market for a head coaching job.

this might just be the dumbest move that franchise has made in years...and here's why:

1. it's too late to promote one of your coordinators to the HC position

2. it's too late to get one of the top HC canidates that runs the 3-4 defense

3. who is left that can run the 3-4 defense as well as wade phillips

4. if you go for an offensive minded coach who doesn't run the 3-4 defense what does that do to you defense which was so dominant the past few years

5. how the hell do you let a fued grow to the point where you can't work with each other anymore when you're winning...schottenheimer is a class act and for a guy not to get along with him makes me wonder...you jepordize your entire franchise because of a beef you can't get over...for god sake your grown men...go in the back...punch the ever livin daylights out of each other for 30 minutes...make up...grab a beer...and move on

The fact that they lost all their coaching staff tells me all I need to know about their FO, some of these guys should of been promoted and the fact that every coach bolted on them, tells me the coaches could give a rats a** about that FO. The Owner needs to take a long look in the mirror and realize where the real house cleaning needs to take place, because he just got raided of a good staff.

Its funny but CAPERS might actually be the best bet you have for this job.

OR

Does anyone know if Tomlin is going to run the COVER 2 OR 3-4 in Pittsburgh?

If he goes cover 2 you will have some 3-4 guys out of work.

Dom Capers is waiting in Miami for the phone to ring.

Yes he's conservative to a fault. Yes he's lost more than he's won everywhere he went. Honestly though you have to admit that he could coach a team with LT in the backfield.

He could coach Marty-ball.

I thought about Capers...but that seemed extreme. He would have the strong running game and powerful 3-4 defense. Might work as long as he got competent coordinators.

Capers should reallybe the forntrunner now for the Chargers job.

I mean, it only makes sense. Give him a top flight offense centered around a franchise RB who can pound pound pound and a top flight 3-4 defense, and Capers may actually do very well.

Holy crap, Capers better be knocking down that door for THAT job. That's his ticket to the promised land.

 <----Capers

capers or sherman.

if capers, we should hire marty as an assitant head coach or front office person.

if sherman, we sould hire marty as our offensive coordinater.

Sincerely,

Bum Phillips

And he lost in the playoffs to the eventual champs, the Raiders, if memory serves. I'm surprised Bud survived that day.

My take on Marty is very different from most of you. I've said this for 15 years and I'm not gonna change now.

No team under Schottenheimer's rule will ever win the Super Bowl. To believe that, and I do, I would have to say it's a good move long term.

You not only play to win the game, but you also play to win the season.

Pure speculation, but Pete Carroll might be in the mix.

CARROLL ALREADY A DONE DEAL?

Early speculation in some league circles is that the Chargers already have a wink-nod deal in place with USC coach Pete Carroll to succeed Marty Schottenheimer.

Consider the evidence.

After it was announced that Schottenheimer would return to the Chargers, John Czarnecki of FOXSports.com reported that the Chargers would have cut Schottenheimer loose if they could have lined up the guy that they wanted to take his place. Czar didn't name the mystery candidate, but our guess was/is that it is/was Carroll.

Four weeks later, Carroll was able to lock up another class of recruits, who signed their letters of intent on February 7.

I don't think Capers is all that conservative.

I never thought of his Panthers team as conservative......

& I never would have thought that Kubiak would run a conservative offense as well.

I do believe his weakest trait, is an inability to develop young players. We saw that here, and in Carolina.

I don't necessarily have a problem with his draft picks. I like Earl, Babin, TJ, Wand, etc....... Peek. I think they all could have had a bigger impact on the NFL if they went to Pittsburgh, SanDiego, Baltimore, etc... But I don't think he did a very good job selling his system to them....... & so, he didn't get their best. I blame those players just as much as I do Capers & fangio.

But the quick success he had in Carolina would make one think that he could be just as successful(if not more) in San Diego, just as quickly, if not quicker.

Couldn't agree more, and I think that is a terrible way to run the orginization. Sucks that now that all the HC jobs are filled, then get rid of him. Must have been some bad blood between schott and smith to do him like this

Might as well have LT as the head coach. The guy has done everything else, maybe first player/coach. :pigfly:

Mike Sherman as their new HC?

I think he should be interviewed. But the key to getting that job is who is going to get along with the GM.

Capers would also be a good candidate. I would like to see what Capers can do with a non-expansion team.

I've always heard and read he had no interest in the NFL. Then again, Oden keeps saying he's coming back to OSU next year.... lol

ESPN reported this morning (sorry, no link) that Marty wanted his brother as defensive coordinator, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. The relationship between HC and FO was already strained, and this deal with his brother just sealed the deal. Anyone hear anything else along those lines?

I bet Joe Pendry would be glad to be Capers' offensive coordinator.

yikes! You are in select company when your decisions can invoke the mighty Bud Adams of years past....and that's not a good thing.

Quietly i agree with you. Marty is a class act guy, fields competitive teams everywhere he goes, savy coach for the most part. I just don't think he'll ever win the big one. To me Marty Ball is about playing not to lose instead of playing to win. The other thing that is a glaring thing is his postseason record. Definately however think it came a a horrid time. I thought that job was Cam's next year if he was at least hinted at being the man after Marty's contract expired.

Rivera might get a look. I think Jim Caldwell will probably get a better look. Sherman perhaps as well. I wouldn't be suprised to see them look at Balitmore for a D coordinator candidate. Could Richard Dent get a shot? Either way this becomes a VERY appleaing job for any HC candidate.

That's not even half of it. He turned an entire franchise around and for the most part lifted an entire city up. Luv Ya Blue was everywhere and standing tall amongst the Steelers, Cowboys, and Raiders of the 70's.

So that's a body of work from 1975-1980. The teams before and after him are in the top ten worst teams that ever played in the NFL. Only Spurrier and the Bucs save them from being the absolute worst ever.
