Giants | Arrington released
Mon, 12 Feb 2007 14:27:10 -0800

Michael Eisen, of Giants.com, reports the New York Giants have released LB LaVar Arrington

GET HIM.....HE WOULD HELP SOLIDIFY OUR LINEBACKERS. It would save us a pick.....these are theplayers we need.....guys that are ok to good and in order to help our team grow and to teach the younger guys....

believe it or not I would rather have Arrington-Ryans-Greenwood. I think that Greenwood made excellent strides last year and made a good number of plays. I also think that if we could somehow get Arrington we should still get another young LB in an early round for depth and development.

Those are some pretty good players..new GM coming in to clean house. Would definately look at Arrington, Pettigout and Emmons, although he might be a MLB, not sure.

we need petigout over lavar, but i'd take them both in an instant. anything that saves us a pick that comes at a reasonable price is ok with me. though, i dont know why they'd come to houston...

I would love to get Lavar Arrington, he could really really help us out with some leadership. He is a good player, he just had problems with the redskin management (go figure) and then was misfortunate with what happend this past year. Giants are trying to get younger it seems and free up some cap space. I think if we can get him for a decent price, it would really help us out. I am all for bringing him in.

This years stats as followed......played 12 games and had 62 total tackles and 49 were solo, 13 were assisted....1 sack and 2 pass deflections....no ff nor fr.....he is mediocre.....here is morlon greenwood our 2nd best lb.....he played 16 games and had 109 total tackles and 83 solo and 26 assist......1 sack 1 int and 2 passes deflected....2 ff and 3 fr.....now here is lavar arrington....i will post last years even though he only played 6 games...not fair to go to different years due to talent on teams and teams they play....so he had 16 total tackles and 14 solo, and 2 assisted, 1 sack and 3 pass deflections, 0 ff and 0 fr......it seems by looking that lavar is the better cover linebacker than both. i say pick up either one of the two

yeah, i remember him being obnoxiously fast. when he was with the foreskins i remember seeing him cover WRs on spread sets every now and then. i'm loving the idea of him speed rushing behind a double-teamed mario on passing downs. think our D staff could have some fun with that.

There's a reason why New York released him after one year... Something about that injury... I dont think LaVar will be the same explosive LB he once was. I think we're better off drafting a young linebacker IMO...

Arrington was doing pretty well until he got hurt against Dallas, and if he can be brought in for a decent price (#3M a year or less with something like a 1.5 or 2 M a year bonus), I would certanly take a look. Same goes for Emmons and Pettigout (would you rather have Ephrim Sallam?)

Arrington is built like a DE, and is a great SAM. He is explosive and fast. Hits hard, and has a swagger. Yes, he freelances a little, but I'm ok with that. I think signing him would save us a draft pick and boost our franchise a lot. Think of it like this: A DE, with sub 4.7 speed, with top LB instincts.

I'd just rather not mess with it. I think we're moving in the right direction and unless you're bringing in a FA who has a solid history I don't want to mess with it.

No more bosselli or anyone that we have to guess which guy is going to show up. If its not proven keep it movin.

I would definately look at Luke and maybe Carlos, but I'm really not interested in Lavar. Luke was the starting LT for 8 years in New York before getting hurt around midseason. If he comes back healthy, he could really improve our line.

Carlos Emmons has been decent, and could be a good backup for Ryans if the price is right.

That brings me to Lavar Arrington. He doesn't do well when forced to play in a scheme, which is a big reason why Washington was willing to let him go. His best years with Washington were before Gibbs took over and he was able to freelance and play more as a rover. New York gave him a chance, but injuries and inconsistancies ended his time with them. I don't think he would fit in with the Texans. I also think there is a slight possibility that he could retire which would make all of this talk moot.

Every fan from every team in the NFL just got excited. Except for maybe the Giants and Redskins.

Haha, not San Francisco. The consensus on our message board is that he is totally not worth it. Especially since he's coming off yet another injury, didn't do anything this entire past season when was healthy, will probably demand a hefty price, and has no experience in a 3-4. Mike Nolan basically implied he was overrated in an article a while ago. Which may be true. I think all the cartilage is basically gone in his knee, so it's bone on bone now. I don't think he'll ever return back to what he was in his prime.

He might help Houston out, but I just hope that the front office doesn't overpay for him if they do decide to go after him.

Petigout would give us a stable LT for the first time in Franchise history. We wouldn't have to spend an early round pick on a LT and we could see if Spencer can come back from his injury with less urgency than we have now. I hope we do it!!!

PS: Not saying Signing Petigout means we shouldn't draft OL early. Just saying it means we dont have to spend a first day pick on an OT with this guy aboard.

i agree. he could be a huge boost to the defense. i like that idea of having him here.
i'll pass. whoever he signs with is still going to have to dole out superstar $$$ for a gimp who wont be worth the contract he signs for. i think arrington still probably thinks very highly of his declining skills. i'd prefer to fix up more pressing needs on the O-Line and in the defensive backfield.

OK, Petigout broke his leg on Nov. 5. The team didn't immediatly IR him as they hoped he might progress well and get back by the end of the season. He didn't progress well enough, so the IR'ed him. Now they cut the guy who was their starting LT. Any one smell something? No telling what is going on yet, but I would use extreme caution on this guy.

The thing with Arrington is that he might acctually be a good fit for our situation. For starters, I assume he would be playing strongside instead of Orr (who had all of 35 tackles this season). If Mario progresses like everyone in the organization thinks he can, teams are not going to be inclined to run at his side of the field. Add Ryans next to him (tackle machine) and Arrington could have a rather limited responsibility in terms of playing the run. This means that he can usually be free to either rush the passer or drop into coverage on passing plays with only a limited worry about stoping the run (mostly cutbacks from runs origniating to the other side of the field). Of course, this is true for most linebacker who are going to be playing behind Mario for us (hopefully), so that means that Arrington has to be able to get to the QB to make this worth it for us(ala Bart Scott). Can he?

"Petitgout started 106 games at tackle and guard over eight seasons for the Giants, but broke his leg against Chicago on Nov. 12 and missed the Giants' final seven games. He became expendable when guard David Diehl switched to left tackle and played well in his absence.

Dumping Petitgout's contract could give the Giants a better shot at re-signing free-agent center Shaun O'Hara."

Arrington for league minimum and minimal signing bonus. The guy has been a poster child for inflated demand and subsequently low production. He also seems to be part of teams that underachieve consistently and there has been discontent on each team. He could also be in the wrong place at the wrong time or certainly not a leader to over come those situations.

Why in the heck would you take an overhyped "speed" guy that is coming off an achilles heel injury? Have we not got enough of the horrible free agent moves in the past?

we should get if he will sign for 2 years and 4.2 million
1.9 mil in '07 and 2.3 mil in '08.
and put a clause in his contration saying he must play 10 games or will lose some of the money.

thanks i am a agent in my free time:winky:

true that. you would think he'd lose burst off the edge with that type of injury. Houston needs to slip away from this guy, even at the league minimum.

I wouldn't count on picking up Arrington guys, he mentioned that he might retire. I dont blame him after the injuries and surgeies he has went though. This was only his 7th season too.

And the three players who were cut were huge parts of the problem. Emmons, 33, had missed 11 games over the last two seasons and hadn't started all 16 games since 2001. The 28-year-old Arrington - who called the Giants "a class organization" yesterday and indicated he's considering retirement - has had two knee surgeries and Achillies surgery in the past three seasons, in which he's played only 23 games.
Compared to those two, the 30-year-old Petitgout has been relatively durable, though he's been plagued by a chronically bad back.

It couldn't hurt. His base salary only comes out to about $900,000. A majority of his big $49M deal is incentives. He's a good player, just doesn't know how to be coached. He seems to freelance. But, who knows, it could work out for the best. Hmmm...

LaVar Arrington
DeMeco Ryans
David Harris

I like the sound of that. Could turn out to be one of the best if we coach em up right.

Since he was released, any team that would want to sign him would have to negotiate a new contract, so there is no telling what his base salary might end up being. Could be lower or higher depending on demand.
