If not Capers...

Hi everyone. Realistically, I do not see Dom Capers as the coach for the long run. Capers is more of a "start em up" kind of coach for new franchises. I wouldnt be suprised to see him coach that new NFL team coming in a few years.

Anyway, with knowing that Capers wont be here for the long run, who would you like to see as the Texans next head coach?

I nominate Jimmy Johnson (coached the cowboys to 2 super bowls).

I nominate Bottle-O-Bud for head coach, and Ibar Harry for offensive coordinator.

I want to see Capers /Palmer after we get our roster complete. As much as I am down on the team after the loss. I do want to see them have time to fill the roster with their OWN players and have them groomed. In all reality we haven't had enough time to fill the roster with adequate depth.. But with this defense as it is now, I just find it hard to believe that we are getting ripped apart still.

I never liked Capers/Palmer (ex-Oiler). It was a sad day for me when Capers was announced as head coach. I have to say Palmer is the worse of the 2 though.

I don't think Jimmy is interested in coaching anymore. He's got such a cushy job with Fox.

it's fine if you don't like our coaches right now...but let me point out this one thing...right now we're running a 3-4 defense and if your going to try and replace capers you better do it with another 3-4 defensive guy otherwise we'll be rebuilding a still building team

Is it just message board talk about replacing Coach Capers or is there some truth to this via the media or Mr. McNair?

I agree totaly,as stated earlier we still more depth on our roster,the talent is there and the depth is coming

Thanks. I wasn't sure if somebody had written something about this in the Chronicle or there was an ESPN blurb or something. I'd be against firing Coach Capers.

I agree WWJD. Trying to bring in a new coach and a whole new scheme would set this team back to square 1.

I think fans are getting frustrated due to the not-living-up-to-potential viewpoint. Capers and company are just scapegoats right now, justified or not.

Personally, I think it might be warranted to talk about after season 4, depending on how we finish. If there is no progression (ie. 2-14 season), then there will probably be a lot of merit to the debate.

But right now, I think they are just taking the brunt of everyone's venting about losing and the way they are losing (not a lot of fire, it seems).

Ok, I think that Double Barrel is right and it wouldn't even cross McNair's mind before the end of next season (and probably not even then) but....

Going hypothetical here and saying that IF McNair did pop Capers after this season (which would scare me because I think it's too soon despite all my complaining) and IF Bud in Tennessee got stupid and let Fisher go as he does from time to time when he gets mad over a losing season, the I would want the Texans to take a good look at Fisher. I don't know for certain that he'd be a good fit here in such a situation but I think they'd be insane not to consider it.

In the pro ranks there aren't too many retreads out there I'd be interested in. Mostly I'd rather see them bring up a deserving coordinator from somewhere over pulling a senior citizen out of the broadcasting booth.

Lots of "IFS" in there but I think Fisher would be an excellent addition to any team as head coach. I've always thought he was very good. That being said I think most of the threads here indicate we think Coach Capers will be here next year.

I do agree with DB though. After year 4 he may very well be on the hot seat.

With everything being said....I dont think Coach Capers is the problem. We lack some more depth and more experience for the the 3 rookies that are major contributors to this team (D. Robinson, J. Babin, and G. Earl). I WOULD consider getting rid of our offensive coordinator though...there just have been way too many games where drives stall due to ridiculous play calling.

Capers will get his 5 years. And then they will go from there.

Or Romeo Crennel, Id like to see Fangio replaced before anybody else. Almost every other team that runs a 3-4, or some version of it, has a solid D that is hard to run on. Whats the deal with us then? Crennel runs the 3-4 D in New England and does a great job doing it.

I haven't been happy with Capers at all this year, but really who is out there to come in and coach a team right now. A college coach (stoops/tedford,etc) definately wouldn't be the answer. Capers will have one more year and it could be a long one, but Palmer needs to go first and then see if a new o-cord can't fix some things. If Capers and a new o-cord can't get things going then capers needs to go.

ok i'm gonna get in on this...i got my tiffs with the coaches of this team but not enough to ask for them to be fired just yet...especially on the defensive side of the ball...i'll tell you the majority of the problems that i've seen on defense is lack of knowledge and execution on our guys...babin has got to be one of the worst at this...he has his good moments as most rookies do but he constantly tries to take the inside pass rush when it's obvious he has contain as the outside pass rusher...allowing the QB to role out to his side and relieve the pressure on him...don't get me wrong babin is doing a lot of things right too just one thing that i constantly see...our SS position as defenitly been the weak point in pass coverage due to an in-effective brown and a in-experienced earl...give earl some time to get his feet firmly in and we'll start to see the hard hitting safety he was in college...foreman should never be asked to rush the passer it's almost laughable when he does...peek definetly needs to be put in more often as well as soon to be shantee orr...payne for most of the season was in-effective but is just starting to regain his form...not quite sure if he's gonna get re-signed at the end of the season...glenn is showing signs of age and so is coleman...

as far as the offense is concerned...they way too inconsistant to get a streak going...the line will play really good one game and be cold and non-exsistant the next...i personally think wand might not be able to handle the LT position full time...pitts makes a lot of mental mistakes but plays hard something mckinney doesn't do a lot of the times...mckinney this season looks to be out of shape...he couple probably stand to drop a few pounds and be more mobile...weigert and wade are pretty rock solid but are not made for the zone blocking scheme...they are more man on man maullers...carr has progressed really well this season but seems to struggle on the road...no biggie...johnson is a giant...bradford sucks...gaffney and armstrong should be able to handle the number 2 and 3 reciever spot next season...and we have DD...talk about wishy washy...it's just not a good thing when you gotta flip a coin and hope the right back shows up for the game

so give the coaches a little break...take a real hard look at what they are working with...a lot of young and new players still getting used to themselves as teamates and the new schemes

The Patriots coaches would be great for Houston. Best situation where you can keep the system without significant change.

But Capers will be here more some time.He's not the reason for the development of the season nor the depth at some positions. Two years more will give the base to judge him.

I agree with you completely about Carr, the receivers and DD. Carr is a great QB at home but needs improvement on the road, but the line is killing him. I've stated before Gaffney and Armstrong are good 2,3 type, but the offense would be great if they were 3,4 and we had another big play threat for our #2 WR. Davis just doesn't have the moves. Look at Julius Jones the other night, he had good burst and quick moves and decisions that's the kind of back we need. As for Babin I was really mad when they selected him, but he's been ok. Hopefully he'll continue to improve. You can't fault it all on the coaches, but at times in the 2nd half of games I've really wondered sometimes what they were thinking. One TD in the second half against Green Bay would have won the game, but they insisted on run after run. The Texans will be fine next year.

you know what's funny...i went to the GB game and thought the same thing then while stuck in traffic on the way back home i was listening to 610 and they stated this fact after everyone was calling in to complain about us running too much...did you know in the fourth quarter they only ran the ball like 3 times...and in the 3rd they only ran the ball like 6 or 8...i think the pass to run ratio was like 4-1 or something like that...it's just that the passes were either incomplete or weren't for more than 3yds...i remember the 2nd half we only had a handfull of 1st downs...we didn't execute and that's the reason we lost that game

It isn't time for any changes.

Offensively. Palmer gets the blame (naturally)
He is working on his 3rd year. Carr has only had 1 year (really) to work the offense. 1st was practice handoffs.. 2nd year we opened up alittle ,but still too many new faces on the line/ rookies at the playmaker position.. and no complete TE. This season we do have most of the tools (except TE and a speed RB) and the line is learning a new blocking scheme.. I expect our offense to have a better season next year (we have impoved statswise).. our redzone needs work.

Defensively
I have been harst on this group.. this is the veteran group. these guys worked their tails off the 1st 2 seasons without any kind of offense.. (maybe it was that the offense was so bad I thought the defense was actually decent). But we have only had 1 draft where we have acknoledged the defense and if we get 3 starters out of that draft I will be happy (Earl,Babin,Robinson) and they have to get the scheme down.. This next draft I expect us to build on defense again and hopefully get at least 2 more starters out of that one too. Fangio needs more time also..

we see how changing the scheme on the OL has hurt (until they learn it) just think of changing philosophy (on both sides of the ball) could hurt a young team

Hahaha, how is orr gonna get in if peek hardly gets in? I will add that again on the game notes, Peek has now played in 90 plays this season, and made 19 big plays. his percentage went from 20% to 21.1% this week in the game. Its great how the texans own web site continually talks about his play and how many big things he does even though he doesnt get PT. Call me crazy but I think we would want a play maker out there more than 6 snaps of defense a game. (remember that many of the 90 plays include special teams)

Was offensive coordinator of the Broncos in two super bowls, his offensive style is similar to the texans, is a great quarterbacks coach, and a Texas boy to boot.

I'd like to see Charlie Wies offensive cordinator from NE... very offensive minded plus i know the guy personally.. so that would be awesome
