HONOLULU - It’s been a few years since the University of Miami has basked in the national glory of the college football spotlight.

But it only takes a short glimpse at the respective Pro Bowl rosters this year to remember the influx of talent that matriculated through Coral Gables in the first half of this decade and beyond.

There are five former Hurricanes in the Aloha State this week to play in the NFL’s annual all-star showcase, and a sixth member, New York Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey, will not participate due to injury. Fortunately for the Texans, arguably the best player of the Miami bunch wears Battle Red and Deep Steel Blue every Sunday during the fall.

With his low-key demeanor and shy-guy persona, wide receiver Andre Johnson doesn’t fit the stereotypical Hurricanes mold. But don’t get it wrong: Johnson bleeds his school’s colors and could not be more proud to represent “The U” this Saturday in his second-career Pro Bowl.

“It’s something that we believe in a whole lot (at Miami),” Johnson said of continuing his school’s prolific football legacy. “Me and (Baltimore Ravens safety) Ed Reed were sitting by the pool the other night and he was like, ‘How many guys do we have here?’ We were sitting there trying to count. So it’s definitely something that we take pride in. And when we’re out on the field we just try to do the best that we can.”

One of Johnson’s New Year’s resolutions was to be more sociable. Whether or not he was kidding, Johnson could have trouble getting a word as he hangs out with characters such as Reed, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne, Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor and San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore. That’s not to mention lovable Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson, who hails from Miami but attended school elsewhere.

Although I personally think the Pro Bowl should be abolished, I just watched Andre Johnson represent the team with a second place finish in the Fastest Man competition. Easily the tallest entry, AJ was quick off the line, but outraced by only one guy.

:logo:

I dunno, but I think he finished 2nd a couple years ago.
He's a very impressive combo of size & speed.

Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson – 15.5
Panthers wide receiver Steve Smtih – 15.7
Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson – 15.8

Wow, is all I can say. AJ is hanging with some elite talent there.

Watched some of the video clips- Manning to Johnson!

KAPOLEI, Hawaii - When you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. That applies to a team, or in the case of wide receiver Andre Johnson on Thursday, an individual.

And the Texans’ lone Pro Bowler was within a few tenths of a second from doing just that during the Best Hands segment of the 2007 Pro Bowl Skills Challenge at the picturesque Ihilani resort (watch the video here).

Unfortunately, the final contestant, Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson, delivered an impressive, yet controversial, time to claim first place and push Andre to third in the standings.

In total, eight players were timed running 80 combined vertical yards – 40 yards each way up and down the field – while moving through four different receiving stations with periodic obstacles in between them. The player that completed the course the fastest with the fewest dropped balls was crowned the winner.

The drill tested speed, hand-eye coordination and change of direction. After Packers wide receiver Donald Driver finished the drill in 16.5 seconds, Andre topped that with a time of 15.8 seconds to pace the field. Using his long, bursting strides, Andre barely broke a sweat despite the punishing heat.

Hopefully Brees is ok, probably a sprain by the way he landed on his hand.

I look forward to watching David Carr let it loose in the secon...oh, wait, he isn't there, I almost forgot! Well at least we'll have Mario dominating the NFC's offens...ooops, not that either. C'mon AJ!

The guy always has so many negative things to say about the texans.....dude if you dont like the team then stfu!!!!! Just stop with all the hate......and dont say 'well i dont hate them' cuz if u didnt u wouldnt down on the decisions about the fo u would suck it up and stick with them..............on a side not chad johnson hyperextended his knee....looked like it hurt!

VY threw the ball downfield and AJ caught it in between two or three defenders, like the one from his rookie year with a slightly worse pass.

AJ catches a 47-yard pass in the middle of the field? What an odd sight.

The good news is that the media team was so focused on Taylor's hit on the punter, that they didn't even pay much attention to the Vince-AJ connection.
