Dungy not first minority HC to win Super Bowl

While he is the first black head coach, he is not the first minority head coach to win a Super Bowl. Tom Flores was 26 years ago. John Lopez had a pretty good article about it. Just thought you should know if you didn't already.

uh... no, Vince Lombardi is the first minority head coach to win a Super Bowl. He's an Italian-American and a Catholic, not a Protestant.

even though he is Italian-American, i think he'd still fall under the caucasian sect of SB winning coaches. tom flores would be the first one i'd consider a minority.

Okay, so you think that way.

If Italian-Americans are not a minority, then why don't we ban their scholarship programs to play football and so forth?

just a small sample... you can conduct your own experiment and get the same results

go to any major University and you will find Italian-American scholarships filed under Ethnic Minority or something close to that.

A very important thing you have to remember is that Spanards (from Spain) are considered caucasions. They are light skinned and have red hair and blue eyes. That is why they are considered caucasions. Mexicans are considered brown. They speak spanish but in a diff dialect.

There are many diff dialects of the Spanish or Latin language. I am half white and half hispanic and people often associate that with Mexican, but it is not so.

Joe Kapp of the Minnesota Vikings was also Hispanic, and a good QB.

The much overlooked Latin populas has come a long way and has done so quietly and somewhat respectfully.

According to statistics Latinos are the biggest minority, and rely less on federal help than any race or ethnicity (including whites).

There are bad people in every race and we should not judge the race by one person, but too often that happens. Hispanic or Latin Americans have never been outspoken as other minority groups, but have held weight with their work ethic, values, and pricipals.

Unfortunately what I see happening with every race (none excluded) is that these young knuckleheads are ruining it for the oldschool guys that laid the foundation for everything. it seems like one generations lowest standard is the next generations highest standard.

I guess what I am saying is that accomplishments tell more about the individual than the race. No matter what DR. King said, Kennedy said, or Chavez said there will always be1 or 2 people who shape the stereotype of a certain race for people who don't want to understand that it is up to the individual to do the right thing and not because he or she is a certain race.

I think MR. Dungy and MR Smith are class acts and they should be examples for all to watch and not just African Americans.

I do not see why America finds it so surprising to see upsatnding people like Mr Dungy, or Mr Smith, or Reggie White, or Landanian Tomlinson, or General Colon Powell doing the right thing. Doing the right thing should not get us praise it should be what is expected. I am not surprised when I see an African American soldier doing the right thing. I am not surprised when I see a Caucasion soldier doing the wrong thing because in the the U.S. Army we are all GREEN!!

Maybe I am too narrow minded and set in my ways, but I think people make too big of an issue out of race, gender, creed , and color. I thought we were passes that? Anyways,

God Bless!!!

Excellent post man!! I do consider myself fairly open minded and definitely not a racist, and yet you compare the difference in the attitudes of Hispanics and blacks and it seems night and day. I don't see blacks that succeed as black men. I see them as people. The thing I respected the most about Dungy tonight was how he said it was great to be the first black to win a Super Bowl but more he wanted people to know he was and is a Christian. God took him there and gave him the hope he possesses. Through everything he has had hope. I support that much more than simply "Yay!! I'm black and won something!!" Maybe that's just you and me.

AMEN BROTHER...AMEN!

Red headed and blue eyed Spaniards are very rare. It's funny how many Americans always say Spaniards are blue eyed and blonde haired. While there are a few that are like that there are very few. Most you see over there are foreigners. My wife is from Madrid and has the look of the majority, light skin, brown hair and brown eyes. Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas, Julio Iglesias are all from Spain and have the typical look. I would say most 90 percent look like that. In southern Spain like Sevilla they are more brown skin, black hair, and many could pass as Hispanic. This is due to their Arabic ancestory. This is also where their flamenco music and dancing comes from.

When my wife first came here she got confused when filling out a job application because she wasn't sure if she was caucasion or hispanic. The definition for caucasion said something about originating from the European community. The hispanic one said something about being from a Spanish speaking country with the culture of Hispana (ancient word for Spain). I told her to choose which ever one would be convenient. If the boss seemed racist check caucasion, if it looked like they were looking to hire minorities check Hispanic.

This also reminds me of a white guy I knew from South Africa. He always chose African American whenever he thought it would benefit him.

If we're including all kinds of minorities, and not just racial, Buffalo coach Marv Levy should be added to the list. Levy, who is Jewish-American, and
his team of course didn't win in any SBs, but participated in what 3 or 4 ?

What difference does it make what race you are? You can either coach or you can't coach and to get to the Superbowl you must be able to coach. All the other crap is for all the lame excuse makers.

All this is way off. No one said anything about minority or Italian-American or anything like that. He is simply the first African-American to win a Super Bowl (period).
