Your 2007 Starting Lineup

Being Realistic, What would you like to have your 2007 starting Texan lineup look like?

Here is mine:

QB: David Carr
HB: Adrian Peterson/Domanick Williams/Ron Dayne/Chris Taylor/Wali Lundy
FB: Vonta Leach
TE: Owen Daniels
WR: AJ
WR: Eric Moulds
LT: Charles Spencer
LG: Chester Pitts
C: Steve McKinney
RG: Fred Weary
RT: Eric Winston

DE: Mario Williams
DT: Terdell Sands
DT: Travis Johnson
DE: Anthony Weaver
OLB: Morlon Greenwood
MLB: Demeco Ryans
OLB: Jamie Sharper
CB: Asante Samuel
FS: Glenn Earl
SS: Michael Lewis
CB: Dunta Robinson

No way Sharper is coming back to H-town. We can definately do better than that. He's out of the league for a reason. Acouple of young guys who are going to available in the 2nd rnd, R.Alexander and D.Harris Michigan, will be getting alot of attention and could possibly turn out to be this years Meco.

I guess we could'nt go after O-line help cuz we gave Samuels a boat-load of cash to here, but I'm liking what I see except Sharper.

samuels wont be in houston if he isnt franchised in new england he will go to a team with a better chance of winning.and u made a mistake with your lineup theres no law here in houston saying david carr has to be the starting qb, after seeing the same bad movie for 5yrs in a row im ready for a new movie so lets see a new qb

Am i missing somehtin or was flanagans injury career ending? cause he should get the start at center and also who is terdell sands? i though anthony maddox was doin pretty good at DT.

Well, there are a ton of things that could happen in free agency and the draft, but to throw out a possible "optimistic option":

QB David Carr (Sage Rosenfels or Jake Plummer as backup)
RB Adrian Peterson [1st round pick] (Domanick Williams backup if healthy, Dayne, Taylor and maybe Lundy getting some action as well)
FB Vonta Leach
WR Andre Johnson and Eric Moulds (Kevin Walter and Jacoby Jones [6th round pick] off the bench)
TE Owen Daniels (Jeb Putzier as backup)
LT Charles Spencer (Brandon Frye [5th round pick] as swing tackle)
LG Chester Pitts
C Steve McKinney/Mike Flanagan
RG Fred Weary
RT Eric Winston (Brandon Frye [5th round pick] as swing tackle)

DE Mario Williams and Baraka Atkins [4th round pick] (Jason Babin, Antwan Peek, ND Kalu as backups)
DT Anthony Weaver and Seth Payne/Travis Johnson (Anthony Maddox and Alfred Malone as backups)
OLB Morlon Greenwood and Rufus Alexander [3rd round pick] (Shantee Orr as backup)
MLB DeMeco Ryans (Wali Rainer as backup)
CB Dunta Robinson and FA acquisition (Roc Alexander, DeMarcus Faggins, and maybe Lewis Sanders as backups)
S Brandon Meriweather [2nd round pick] and Glenn Earl (CC Brown and John Walker as backups)

That looks pretty good to me, but I doubt Alexander falls to the 3rd round. If we could get Ken Hamlin from Seattle to play FS, it would make my offseason. We could then use the 2nd round pick on someone like Earl Everret or Alexander, and that 3rd rounder on someone like Kolb (to satisfy the blood thirsty masses demaning a new QB).

qb- jake plummer (carr backup)i dont like but bound to hapen i say kep carr as starter
rb- chris taylor, ron dayne, wali lundy
fb- vonta leach
wr- aj, moulds, mathis, anderson
lt- levi brown
lg- chester pitts
c- steve mckinney
rg- fred weary
rt- charles spencer (eric winston sing tackle)

de- mario williams, jason babin, antwan peek, 3rd round pick

mlb- demeco ryans, wali rainer backup
olb- morlon greenwood, lance briggs
cb- dunta robinson, demarcus faggins, dexter mccleon
fs- brondon merriweather

OK here is my most reasonable starting lineup:

QB: David Carr/Rosenfels/???
HB: Adrian Peterson (1st)
FB: Vonta Leach
TE: Owen Daniels
WR: AJ
WR: Eric Moulds
LT: Charles Spencer
LG: Chester Pitts
C: Ryan Kalil (2nd)
RG: Fred Weary
RT: Eric Winston

DE: Mario Williams
DT: Cory Redding (FA)
DT: Travis Johnson/Anthony Maddox
DE: Anthony Weaver
OLB: Morlon Greenwood
MLB: Demeco Ryans
OLB: Kawika Mitchell/Na'il Diggs (FA), would love to put Briggs here as I have been advocating the Texans pursue him, but I think he may have played his way out of our price range.
CB: Faggins/David Irons (3rd)
FS: Ken Hamlin (FA)
SS: Glenn Earl
CB: Dunta Robinson

This would give us Hamlin, Redding, Mitchell/Diggs in FA and AD, Kalil, Irons in the first 3 rounds of the draft. I think all these FAs would be upgrades at their positions and would fit nicely under the cap. If we were to pursue David Macklin in FA, then we could go with LB in the 3rd, like Stewart Bradley, or OL as an insurance policy for Spencer and depth. Briggs would be icing on the cake and absolutely make my day.

We trade back into the 10-14 range and pick up an extra 3rd...

CB: Aaron Ross(3rd)

So far,I like TexanAddicts scenario the best, (With Chris Taylor and Ron Dayne as backup, and DDW depending on how healthy,) I'm not really an advocate of drafting Peterson but if we get Hamlin (or Grant) in FA, I love to draft Peterson if he did fall to us. The Kalil pickup in the second is nice too.

At this point, I expect Kalil to be gone by our 2nd pick.

I wouldn't mind having Grant if we couldn't get Hamlin. He would have that extra insentive when we play the Jags twice a year.

I just fleshed Xtru's out a little bit...... too lazy to do it all on my own.

I'd prefer Levi Brown with the first pick & move Lewis Sanders to FS. I know it's not a popular opinion.... but that's what I'd do. I'd also move Antwan to the SAM spot. Call me crazy, but I think we generate more turnovers when he is on the field, & I'd like to find a way to keep him on the field as often as possible. He can't play the position worse than Orr.... & hopefully he'll see this is the only way he is going to last long in this league, and starts to make plays from this spot.

Yes, nice defense, but the offense would SUCK! AGAIN! I'm all for having a great defense, but you can't neglect the offense in the draft on the 1st day. Remember, sometimes the best defense is a good offense! JMHO!

My two cents... Neither Peek nor Babin are on the team next year. Peek is UFA, and could get a nice offer somewhere else instead of part time here. Babin I'd like to think might be packaged in a draft day trade to Miami for a pick... I bet Capers would like him in the 3-4 still.

Well, in that lineup Carr was replaced. That in itself is one of the most glaring problems. Look, the way I see it we could just about draft any position and it'd more than likely fill a hole.:winky:

FREE AGENCY

I choose not to be overly active in free agency because of our cap situation so I targeted only one guy and went after him hard landing hometown boy Nate Clements.

DRAFT

Choose to trade down in the draft and pick up an extra pick. Choose Green Bay as a trading partner because if Adrian Peterson falls the would love the chance to replace Ahman Green without losing a beat. If Peterson not their they could add A top WR like Jarrett or Rice/Ginn jr. to go along with Driver.

I know I put 3 rookies on defense, but that's the only way we're gonna build a solid defense and have it around for years to come. I'm tired of seeing second-rate players like Greenwood and C.C. Brown take the field. Our secondary is very thin, and we have to do something about that.

Navy_Chris..... why in the world would Jameel still be on the roster??

Vonta has shown that he can block, he can make holes, he can catch.... he can do it all. We don't need Cook.... not even as a backup.

He can't even perform the most basic of fullback duties, and make a hole.

Amobi.......... Irons......... cool

You're right dude, I wasn't even thinking about Vonta. All I was thinking about was the New York game when he fumbled in the red zone and all I wanted to do was pull my hair out and throw my TV out the window...haha.

I wish the Texans would also quit worrying about the RB position. Chris Taylor will NOT disappoint if given the opportunity...he already started the path to proving that, with a 99 yard, 1 TD performance.....please let him finish what he started!!

I personally think they are not going to draft a QB because they have like three QB's on the roster.

Can you PLEASE stop writing about Chris Taylor in everyone of your posts until he proves himself....or at least until TC
count me as one who doenst think our starting RB is on the roster. i just have a hard time believing dayne, taylor, gado, or lundy are anything more than 3rd down/goalline type players.

Chris Taylor showed promise, but one or two games isn't enough for me...and same goes for Ron Dayne.

-Ron Dayne has proven that he can run well and isn't a complete bust. He can run with power, and be a good power back.

-Ron Danye has NOT proven that he can be a reliable starter take all the carries and make the pro bowl.

HOWEVER I am not outruling the second. I think for Chris Taylor it is more that, he has shown he can do something, but lets make sure it's not beginers luck before we plan on him being our great running back.

The good news about our backfield, boy do we have a lot of upside, the bad part, every running back has a question mark. Ron Dayne, is he what he was at the end of the season? Can Chris Taylor mold into a great runningback? Can Wali Lundy carry over his pre season performence and make it a consistent regular season performence? Can Domanick Williams play like he did a few years back? and if we get AP, Can Peterson transfer his college game to the nfl and make a fast impact?

Out of those 5 questions...at least one will be answered yes, so I think we will be ok. This is kind of a good running back problem to have, its not like we don't have talent (like the problem was before this year...aside from domanick williams... I can't think of one decent back we have had)

P.S. sorry it's so long.

I like your lineup with a few exceptions. The ones I bolded and underlined are the ones that I don't really agree with.

I'll start from the top...

Offense:

QB- David Carr...Unfortunately, I do think he will start the season as the starting QB, but I don't think he will finish it as the starter.

HB- Marshawn Lynch(pick RD.1 # 16(CAL))...Personally, I don't think Lynch fits Kubiaks style. From what I saw of Lynch, he has a similar style as Vernand Morency, whom Kubiak traded away.
Domanick Williams...I don't think he will make it out of training camp. I really like Dom, but that bone-on-bone in his knee is going to force him to retire IMHO.

FB- I agree

TE- only one comment on the TE position. Bruener is still one of the best blocking TE's in the league and has better hands than alot of people give him credit for. For this reason, Bruener will be ahead of Putzier.

WR- I really like the David Ball pick in the 5th, but I don't think he would be the third WR at the start of the season.

OL- Ryan Harris(pick RD .3 #72(N.D.)...I don't know much about Harris, so I can't comment on whether or not this is a good pick. The rest of the Offensive Line, I will just go with your picks.

Defense:

DL- I don't know much about your picks for DE & DT, but with your scenario, if Okoye is there with the 16th pick, I would take him. This would mean that one or both of your DL picks would go as a BPA pick.

MLB- DeMeco Ryans goes without saying, but he needs a backup. If Wali Ranier can come back from his injury, I think he will be the backup here.

OLB- Rufus Alexander(Pick RD.2 #39(OKLAHOMA)...I think this is too high for him. I don't think he goes until late in the 2nd at the earliest, but I actually see him going closer to mid 3rd.

CB- I'll go with what you got here, but I would pobably use the second 2nd round pick on UT CB Ross if available, or go with Baylor CB's Wilson in the 3rd, or Airline in the 4th.

FS- Brandon Merriwether(Pick RD.2 #48(MIAMI)...I like Merriweather, but if Okoye isn't there at the 16th pick, I would probably go with Landry there which would make Merriweather unnecessary. If we go OL at the 16th, I think we will go with Levi Brown. If Okoye or Brown is the pick at 16, I think we would have to take Merriweather with the first of the two 2nd round picks to get him, because I don't think he will fall very far past that.

in the 6th round, I would probably have to go after P Daniel Sepulveda.

We trade back into the 10-14 range and pick up an extra 3rd...

Planning on starting four rookies on defense next season? You're a bold man but I think they'll probably only start one rookie on defense next year. Maybe two if things don't go well (injury bug comes back to visit us).

I love this lineup for 2 reasons:

1) someone else is finally showing some love to Chris Taylor
2) I love the idea of going defensive heavy on the first day of the draft

Too all the Jake Plummer supporters out there:

While I think Jake and Gary reuniting would be a wonderful thing, Jake is NOT the long-term answer for us. I would much rather bring Aaron Rodgers in and see if Gary can't groom him to be our QB of the future. I like Aaron and Sage next season. Two QBs is a good idea...I don't like the idea of having 3.

not bad..i like you only have 2 FA's on the list and both are attainable for us...i don't like seeing lance briggs, nate clements, steinbeck and say freeny...its unbelievable. and unattainable.

i could see this happening...do you mean seth payne instead of sean payne? just curious. not a bad line up for just one offseason.

I wish the Texans would also quit worrying about the RB position. Chris Taylor will NOT disappoint if given the opportunity...he already started the path to proving that, with a 99 yard, 1 TD performance.....please let him finish what he started!!

This is a huge assumption, seeing as Taylor couldn't get off the practice squad until the end of the season, even with the Texans struggling to assert any kind of running game all season. And his 99 yrd performance came against the Browns who are not a defensive powerhouse (shocking I know). I would like the FO to keep Taylor around to see what he might be capable of, but to pencil him in as the starter after a good game against the Browns is setting this team up for disaster.

CanadienTexan, I'm really liking your line-up. We fill alot of holes and pick up a major FA in Clemens & got some good depth in alot of positions. Good Job.

If Okoye or Brown is the pick at 16, I think we would have to take Merriweather with the first of the two 2nd round picks to get him, because I don't think he will fall very far past that.

in the 6th round, I would probably have to go after P Daniel Sepulveda.

thanks for your feedback.
1) I agree about Carr might be the guy but very likely wont be by the end if he plays like David has the last couple years.
2) I actually like Adrian Peterson alot more than Lynch as our runningback, but saw him falling to us at #8 as the best way to trade down and pick up another potential starter.(I'd rather have Lynch and Merriwether instead of just All Day) I totally agree about the artist formally known as Domanick Davis just put him on the list out of loyalty.
3) (Harris) Just could not go any futher in this draft without getting O-line help he was a long time starter for Notre Dame. He is a quicker lineman that I believe will make a great zone blocker.
4) you could just switch the 2nd rounders so that it has Merriwether earlier and Alexander near the mid 2nd I actually thought about that just didnt think it really mattered. I also think Merriwether in the 2nd is way better value than Landry in the 16 spot but only time will tell.
Just thought I would try to awnser some of your questions or concerns as to why I did what. thanks again for the feedback

This is fun...I think I'll do another....

Trade our first to the Jets for their 1st and a 2nd they aquired from Washington...

F.A Signing: Nate Clements

Trade Carr to Chicago for their 4th

QB: Sage, Plummer,Kolb(4th)
RB: Taylor, Dayne, Selvin Young(5th)
FB: Leach
WR: Moulds, Aundre Allison(4th)
WR: Johnson
TE: Daniels
LT: Spencer
LG: Pitts
C: Ryan Kalil(2nd)
RG: Weary
RT: Winston

DE:Adam Carriker (1st)
DT: Travis Johnson
DT: Anthony Maddox
DE: Mario
SLB: Earl Everret(3rd)
MLB: Meco
WLB: Greenwood
CB: Robinson
CB: Clements(Free Agent)
SS:Glen Earl
FS: Merriweather(2nd)

K: Chris Brown
P: Daniel Sepulveda(6th)

The only complaint that I would have is Carriker is a little to much like Mario .

I think a quicker edge guy to rush the passer might be more helpful .

I like........

but what do we do with McKinney, Hogdon, & Flanagan??

& what if Spencer is more RT now, than LT??

McKinney Flannagan and Hogdon would all have to learn all the interior spots because they'd all be back-ups at LG, RG, and C in that scenario....

And about Spencer...If they doubt that'd he'll be back at full strength I'd target Levi Jones, or Tony Ugoh in the first...and instead of taking Kalil, I'd look to get Lamar Woodley to be the DE opposite Mario...

So it'd be:

QB: Sage, Plummer,Kolb(4th)
RB: Taylor, Dayne, Selvin Young(5th)
FB: Leach
WR: Moulds, Aundre Allison(4th)
WR: Johnson
TE: Daniels
LT:Levi Jones(1st)
LG: Pitts
C: McKinney
RG: Weary
RT: Spencer

DE:Lamar Woodley(2nd)
DT: Travis Johnson
DT: Anthony Maddox
DE: Mario
SLB: Earl Everret(3rd)
MLB: Meco
WLB: Greenwood
CB: Robinson
CB: Clements(Free Agent)
SS:Glen Earl
FS: Merriweather(2nd)

K: Chris Brown
P: Daniel Sepulveda(6th)

The two biggest assumptions in his scenerio would be the trade to the Jets as well as trading Carr to the Bears.

It looks good though, I like it.

Hey....I'm bored....

I'll probably come up with a few of these scenarios....

QB: Sage, Plummer,Kolb(4th)

DE:Adam Carriker (1st)
DT: Travis Johnson
DT: Anthony Maddox
DE: Mario

What would you think of that team ?

Far fetched ?
What happened to Anthony Weaver? He signed a $24 million contract last season, and now he's on the bench? And I don't think the Texans would bring in Snake just to backup Sage.

Everett is a Will LB, not a Sam. But, I liked your picks on offense. Tell me why the Jets want to move up?
