Steve Wyche, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports the Atlanta Falcons have decided to part ways with team consultant Alex Gibbs.

Falcons' blocking guru Gibbs let go

Alex Gibbs, the former offensive line coach/consultant who implemented a zone-blocking scheme that contributed to the Falcons leading the NFL in rushing the past three seasons, will not be back with the team.

Though coach Bobby Petrino has overhauled the coaching staff since being hired Jan. 8, Gibbs had been listed as an offensive line consultant, his title the past two seasons. The Falcons confirmed Wednesday that Gibbs, who came to Atlanta in 2004 with then-coach Jim Mora as the offensive line coach, was not retained.

Mike Summers, who was on Petrino's staff at Louisville, was hired as the offensive line coach.

Gibbs' departure signals a likely change in blocking philosophy from the zone/cut-blocking scheme to more of a traditional power game. Petrino has previously based his offense around a physical running game.

The Falcons also will begin the transition to bigger, more physical offensive linemen from the sleeker, smaller linemen that fit better into Gibbs' scheme, Petrino has said in interviews since being hired.

Well, hey, if we could get Gibbs as a consultant AND bring in some of these Falcon lineman that are going to be cut loose...

:shades:

If we were to sign Gibbs, which I support, what happens to Sherman and what does his role look like after Gibbs. Both specialize in OL.

According to John McClain, Gibbs only wants to work as a consultant and does not want to work full time. I have had several conversations about this with him and the Texans would love to have him but only want him if he is going to work fulltime which he isn't.

I hope your wrong on this and the team reconsiders having him in as a consultant. Let him do what he does, and let John Benton learn from him. Gibbs will lead the practice seasons and the training camp and then go be a part time guy during the regular season. He does film work and helps set up the OL game plans each week. The nBenton would be responsible for getting the player on the right page, during the week and during the game.

I would be all over this. Plus any of the players that are let go by Atlanta would be on my speed dial real quick.

Painekiller, I wish 2002114 was wrong too, however he is absolutely correct.

Below are my own comments made in another A Gibbs thread, it talks about my response from McClain in an email i sent him.

Well it looks like Gibbs isn't an option here, at least in the opinion of John McClain.

I wrote him an E-mail to ask him his opinion regarding Gibbs coming to Houston, and this was his response back.

Ashley,

Gibbs is not a candidate here. Kubiak was interested originally. As you know, Alex hasn't worked full time since he retired from the Broncos and became a consultant. Even with the Falcons, he had an assistant. Kubiak is at a point where he needs a full-time commitment from all of his coaches.

Take care.

Nice post TP. Rep your way.

The first question is...what are you going to do with Mike
Sherman ? Especailly all of you take the o-lineman late guys. The second question is who the heck is he going to coach up ? So is this tread a back handed inslut to Sherman, I.E. it's all Sherman's fault because we haven't spent more than a fifty pick in the draft on the o-line since the frachise's inception and therefore the lack of tallent is clearly Sheman's fault ? Jeeeeze.

Thanks TP for the update. But remember this is the guy (McClain) that had us taking Vince Young or Reggie Bush. So I am not so sure he has a great feel for the draft selections of the team nor all the coaching moves the team will make.

Also I can see Kubiak giving Gibbs a break this year, as opposed to last year when they had 10 player to get on the same page, this year they should be further along with the same core of guys coming back.

For what it's worth, McClain seems to know a decent amount of people in the league and have a decent idea of the politics and such behind a lot of moves. I don't think he overly understands the game of football itself and many of the Xs and Os of the game so I don't listen to him much regarding players, free agency, draft stuff, etc. but generally I think he has decent knowledge of the front office aspect of things. But going along with what you were saying, I take everything McClain says with a grain of salt and don't hold it to be the gospel until it comes true.

We did have those 2 third rounders last year...

See Gtex THAT is the problem. Winston and Spencer were # 65 and #66 in the draft. I'll let you figure out where that was and which players are out of synch. A lot of you tend to forget stuff. The fact is Ferd Weary is the highest player this frarnchise has ever drafted...at the fifty. In a bad draft for o-lineman. How the disaster that is our o-line is Mike Shermans fault is anyones guess. The guy basically in NFL years, just got here. I think you guys need a six pack of patients and let these guys work for a couple of off seasons before you condem them out of hand. They may well fail, but they deserve our support untill it is clear that they have failed. JMHO.

Chester Pitts was the 50th player selected that year, Weary went 66th. Here is the draft position of our current OLinemen that would be in the regular rotation:

Charles Spencer - 65th pick in 2006
Chester Pitts - 50th pick in 2002
Mike Flanagan - 90th pick in 1996 (by Packers, also made the Pro Bowl in 2003)
Fred Weary - 66th pick in 2002
Eric Winston - 66th pick in 2006
Steve McKinney - 93rd pick in 1998 (by Colts)
Zach Wiegert - 38th pick in 1995 (by Rams)

For what it's worth, this is what the Denver OLine looks like:
Matt Lepsis - Undrafted free agent in 1997
Ben Hamilton - 113th pick in 2001
Tom Nalen - 218th pick in 1994 (made the Pro Bowl in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2003)
Cooper Carlisle - 112th pick in 2000
George Foster - 20th pick in 2003
Eric Pears started 10 games for them this year at LT as an undrafted rookie

Other than George Foster who plays RT for them, the only OLinemen they've drafted earlier than the 4th round since Shanahan has been there was Dan Neil in the 3rd round in 1997 who had a prosperous career for them and then Lennie Friedman in the 2nd round in 1999 but he didn't last long. Over that time they've had the #1 offense in the league in total yards, rushing yards, and points scored, so they've managed to survive. While you obviously can't always count on finding late-round gems, it goes to show that you don't need the "top-end talented" guys to operate this offense.

For that matter, look back at the drafts of the predecessors in the West Coast Offense. Green Bay ran similar type of offense under Mike Holmgren who had been an offensive assistant and the offensive coordinator in San Francisco under Bill Walsh and George Seifert. They did draft some OLinemen pretty high in the draft: Earl Dotson in the 3rd round in 1993 (81st overall) , Aaron Taylor in the 1st round in 1994 (16th overall), John Michels in the 1st round in 1996 (27th overall), Ross Verba in the 1st round in 1997 (30th overall), Mike Wahle in the 2nd round of the supplemental draft in 1998. Verba and Wahle have been pretty talented players for a while, Taylor and Michels were less prominent. The Packers also didn't have a whole lot of top-end OLine talent when Holmgren came to the team, the only OLineman they had drafted above the 6th round in the 4 previous drafts was Tony Mandarich at #2 in 1989, remember how he worked out?

Going beyond that, the architect of the West Coast Offense and Bill Walsh: Bubba Paris in the 2nd round in 1982 (#29 overall), Guy McIntyre in the 3rd round in 1984 (73rd overall), Steve Wallace in the 4th round in 1986 (101st overall), Harris Barton in the 1st (22nd overall) and Jeff Bregel in the 2nd (37th overall) in 1987, and this was before free agency in which teams were truly built thru the draft. It was a different era in which technology and scouting was nowhere near what it is today, but you still get the picture.

Our team definitely needs to upgrade its offensive line, but we don't need the top end guys to do it, we need guys that fit the system and are talented but aren't necessarily what are considered the ultra good prospects by all the teams.

That's a good post. I think Winston is a good addition. I think he will hold is own at right tackle for us for awhile. The positions I am not sure about is at guard and obviously left tackle. We need new guys in both of these positions. If we can get Spencer back that would be really good.

I agree on the guard/center, I think that is the bigger need right now since we need a new starter there, of course assuming Charles Spencer is healthy, but everything I've heard sounds like his bone is healed and his cartilage hasn't been bothering him to this point and he is expected to be fine. If that is the case then he is our LT, and everything I've heard from people I know over there is very glowing reports on how much they like him as LT. I think the weakest point on our OLine this year was at center, that being the case I don't know if I'd draft a center (Beekman or Kalil could likely start and contribute soon) or draft a guard and move Weary to center (Beekman, Grubbs, and maybe a couple others could start and contribute soon). The coaches can't do anything but agree that the line play needs to be upgraded for this team to succeed, whether that means bringing in several new players, coaching them better, or a combination thereof remains to be seen, but I expect OT to be the last thing that they see a big problem with on the OLine. JMHO.
