Completely Different Mock...

Ole Miss Texan

Hall of Fame
The purpose of this is to show a different way the draft can come about...y'all will all have your comments and they are appreciated. I'm just tired of seeing the exact same mock on every single website on the web...the top 10 picks at least.

Please give feedback and keep an open mind. let me know if one team would choose someone else..ie..tampa bay, wash., min..

1.Oakland Raiders- Calvin Johnson (Questions surround Moss/Porter...CJ is best in draft and an elite talent..Al Davis will realize while Russell is tempting he is not nfl ready by any means.)
2.Detroit Lions- Gaines Adams (They just resigned their LT to big money and are stuck with him although he's not bad by any means. They need desperate help on D esp Pass Rushing...they aren't interested in qb's esp quinn. They hope to trade down with arizona so they can snag thomas but dinner may not be enough)
3.Cleveland Browns-Adrian Peterson (while I think the smartest thing for them to do is grab Alan Branch or Amobi Okoye because their NT has been in the nfl for 80yrs. Russell is very tempting but they need instant gratification so key people can keep their job.)
4.Tampa Bay-Jamaal Anderson (this one was hard because CJ is written in everywhere. With him gone they look to their horrid D. Gaines is gone so they settle for Anderson many think is better than Adams and may be the best Defensive guy in the draft. They have sims and gratkowski unfortunately)
5.Arizona Cardinals-Joe Thomas (whether they trade up or not..they get their guy Joe. They are thrilled they waited here and still got him..they need help on the D the rest of the draft)
6.Washington Redskins-Alan Branch(I almost went Jamarcus Russell here but they have cambell and have more needs)
7.Minnesota Vikings-Dwayne Jarrett (this was another tough one for me. They really need a WR to help Tarvarous Jackson out...I think Ginn is overrated and by the time april comes around minn. will too. This may be too high for Jarrett I'm not sure who else to pick. He could become a very solid WR for their offense.
8.Houston Texans-Amobi Okoye (If they pass on vince, they pass on russel? well both DE's are gone, Joe Thomas, and Adrian Peterson. I think Houston will probably have Okoye rated pretty highly. with him on the board still I don't see them going FS or CB. Levi Brown is a very good possibility but I think they will fall in love with Okoye's play and personality. We will finally have someone in the middle that commands attention. with this pick I look for FS-Meriweather, CB-Ross,Houston,Hughes or C-Kalil, or OT-Ugoh in the 2nd round.)
9.Miami Dolphins- Jamarcus Russell (culpepper and harringon? lets go with russell they are thrilled he fell here)
10. Atlanta Falcons- Reggie Nelson (in desperate need of a FS and nelson is a true playmaker)

Please let me know what y'all think of this different mock. criticize constructively and not "uhh russell going first your dumb, thomas next to detroit...i've seen 'em on all the mocks in the world and they are always right" If you disagree w/ one player/team let's see who they should draft then...and what effects that has on the restof the top 10.

good night ; )

With Chris Simms at QB, and both Quinn and JaMarcus on the board, I cannot see Tampa passing on one of the two available signal callers. While I agree that JaMarcus is raw, both of those guys are going to be something special. Gruden needs a strong leader under center, and Simms simply is not it.

I think Jamaal Anderson, therefore, slides to Washington.

If CLE takes Peterson _and_ JaMarcus is on the board at #8, I have a sneaking suspicion that we draft JaMarcus. It would be good from a marketing perspective, given the proximity to LSU and might make for an interesting game against the Saints next year (big assumption: that he plays).

If Quinn is there, I do not think the Texans draft Quinn. I would not at all be surprised to see the Texans make waves about Quinn ahead of the draft and post-combine, in an attempt to raise the value of their 8 pick. Miami needs a QB, and I would love nothing more to trade down 1 pick and still get the same player we would have taken at 8.

Of course, the same logic applies to JaMarcus. Though my gut says we actually pull the trigger on drafting him. Just a hunch.

Yea I think the most interesting thing in the draft will be where the QB's fall. There is a few teams that definitly could and probably should pick them up but they ALL have more glaring needs and could have those players rated higher than either QB. I don't really see both falling all the way to the 9 but its possible. I defintly see Tampa taking JR.

I dont see Tampa drafting a QB.

They have Simms for two more years and Gradkowski was very, very good for a late round rookie QB.

Their biggest need has got to be DT. I wouldnt be surprised if they grabbed Alan Branch that early.

I think it's a good Mock. Nice to see something different yet realistic.

I would be very happy with Okoye at #8. I don't know if we could trade down a little and still get him. His draft stock has been rising with his showing at the Sr. Bowl and may go even higher after the Combine. So, picking him at #8 would be ok with me.

Or...if this is how it plays out...I think you would be in an excellent position to work a move down. Would I love Ohkoye next to Weaver...you bet. That addition would jump our sacks total from the high twenties to the low forties ..at least. Effectivly almost doubling last years out put.

But if the inital reports and Mayocks final report say that Jamarcus is the real deal, 1. I don't think he gets past the first seven, and 2. if he did someone would bite. Since there are only two locks on the board at QB I could see a club who was close to a play off run making a Move up to get him. So is Giving up Okoye and the other elite three or four left on the board under this scenario worth he move down ? Ohkoye doesn't make it past fifteen. Levi Brown doesn't make it past Buffalo at twelve...so who needs a do over at QB ?

Interesting for a different perspective on things. That being the case, my one comment would be I think if the Dolphins were to take a QB with both available that they'd go for Brady Quinn, he just seems much more like Cam Cameron's type of QB. I'm also not sure they'd look to take a QB that high, sometimes a new coach wants to clean out a lot of the roster and bring in his own guys, but at the same time he has two high 1st round picks at QB right now that he hasn't personally worked with so he might give the two of them a chance to duke it out in training camp and see what he thinks of his options next offseason after having been with them for a year.

couple notes:

gruden doesn't really like simms. he doesn't fit the offense and regressed last season.

gradkowski was terrible and was even worse as the season wore on. completely ineffective the last 3-4 games he played. looked flat-out awful.

alan branch doesn't make much sense. really not a fit in the tampa 2 at all.

so would you say in this scenario...Tampa takes Jamarcus over Anderson?

If so how would that effect Wash, Minn, Houstons picks?

You said in the thread "Worst mock ever" that Gruden wouldn't take Russell. So who would they take in this scenario?

the bucs' board to that point would look somewhat like:

joe thomas
amobi okoye
jamaal anderson
brady quinn

kastofsna, this was precisely my thinking when i posted about simms not fitting and tampa drafting jamarcus if he was available. i'm still getting used to this message board thing -- sometimes i do not fully express my opinions in my haste. :shoot:

Kastofsna - I figured you would say that the Dolphins would offer Tampa something they couldn't turn down to come up and get J. Thomas. They obviously will need it for Ronnie Brown to run for 1600 yards in 07, considering he had only 1008 yds in 06 and only 1915 in 28 total games. So, you better hope they trade up. JMO.

the reason he only had 1008 is becuase mike mularkey didn't commit to the run and they ran plays out of the shotgun 70% of the time and that he missed 3 games due to a hand injury. the fact that he "only" had 1008 speaks volumes of just how good he can be when utilized by someone who's not a buffoon.
