Texans hire two assistant coaches

The Texans continued tweaking their coaching staff Monday. Larry Kirksey, an NFL assistant for nine years, will coach the wide receivers, and Jethro Franklin will coach the defensive line.

Franklin was fired by Tampa Bay earlier this month after one season as defensive line coach. He was an assistant with Green Bay from 2000-04.

Kirksey coached the wide receivers in San Francisco, Detroit and Jacksonville before his most recent stint as the assistant head coach/running backs for Middle Tennessee. He was an assistant head coach at Texas A&M in 2000.

The team remains in discussions with Frank Bush, the former assistant head coach/linebackers of the Arizona Cardinals, and Kirk Doll, the linebackers coach of the Denver Broncos. The team is considering hiring an assistant head coach for defense.

Last week, the Texans moved wide receivers coach Kyle Shanahan to quarterbacks coach. They are reassigning former defensive line coach Bob Karmel-owicz within the organization.

i know a little about franklin, and i know he was a HUGE downgrade from rod marinelli. the results speak for themselves, really. although marinelli is one of the best d-line coaches of all time, so maybe they should've let franklin stick around longer in tampa bay.

Wide Receiver Coach---we go from a rookie with no experience to a coach with 9 yrs NFL experience--what's up with that? I'm not saying it's bad or anything...too, remember how posters use to slam Caper's for hiring his 'cronies?'...well, I think Kubiak has got him 'out numbered'....

I love these two hires, because they aren't hires that are kind of favors... u know? like they aren't personal friends of kubiak that wanted a job, these guys are qualified. Green Bay did have a good pass rush those years, and had a lot of success, and USC's defensive line was crazy good...and I dont think it was all just talent, because a lot of those guys aren't in the nfl right now. The other guy developed TO and coached Jerry Rice... that is awesome. Adds a lot of much needed experience to our coaching staff. I think the receivers coach can really help Andre get to that next level, and that next level is being hte best receiver in the nfl. Hopefully the defensive line coach can help out our pass rush and our ability to anchor shed better, two weaknesses on our defensive line currently, should be a good tutor for Mario Williams.

The 'other guy' WR coach has that 'Denver' connection, as he was a 'volunteer' coach with the Broncos in 2004--

Here's some general observations about the hirings I did in the FanHouse:

Has an unnecessary picture of a Texans cheerleader next to it, because a. all the entries need pictures; b. head shots of coaches are boring; c. figured that most of my readership would appreciate it more than a boring head shot of the coaches.

Silly, I know.

awesome. i love cheerleaders. :D

Franklin was terminated from Tampa Bay this offseason, reportedly due to the lack of a consistent pass rush and the drop off of sack numbers.
that makes me nervous. they keep on saying karmelowicz is being 'reassigned within the organization.' why won't they be more specific?

The Bucs drop off in sack numbers from '05 to '06 is easy to figure. No Simeon Rice.

My guess is that Spires, Hovan, Smith and Wyms aren't going to make most coaches look like geniuses -- not that our DLs are that much better....

Its seems like his age is a major factor as he is probably moved into more of an office/ mangenment position. Perhaps the lack of production from the d-line was a factor as well. ( sorry no sources, just my gut)

simeon rice really sucked the entire season. the front four for the bucs was the exact same for the first 6 games of the season as last year. no pressure. rice especially completely disappeared for LONG stretches. there's no denying there was a huge dropoff in play this year compared to last. and somehow booger mcfarland and chris hovan dropped off from their pro bowl-calibur seasons last year in the running game. 17th against the run this year, compared to 6th last year.

spires and wyms have been really good prior to this season. very under the radar, but good.

They also traded Anthony "Boogar" McFarland to Indy last year.

Just added that in there as some more background. AJ is right about the TB pass rush, and Karm's past health issues. I hope he is well, and maybe works in an Alex Gibbs sort of capacity.

Truth be told, there isn't much we can tell about stuff in the offseason and based on resumes. Resumes don't get wins, but hopefully an experienced staff that communicates and works well together equals wins.

It would be a shame to pin the defensive decline in Tampa Bay solely on their coaches. They had a crappy offense (#31 in scoring ahead of only Oakland) that put more pressure on an injured defense. I think the firing of Franklin and others are a last ditch effort by Gruden to keep his job (put the blame on others). I'm hopeful that Franklin will do good things. With young guys like Mario and Travis on the line, it's good to have a former college coach who can motivate young players.

Yeah, he disappeared...literally.

Since you live in Tampa you already know this but for the benefit of Texans fans who may not, Rice hurt his shoulder in Week 5 and was never the same. He only played in 8 games and was ultimately put on IR after Week 11.
