Levi Brown

just got a feeling this big fella could be a strong possibility for the Texans using the 8th pick to trade down & pick up an extra 3rd :shades:

OT has been & still remains the franchise #1 need. when Spencer comes back healthy move him to his natural RT position, slip Winston to RG, Weary Center & leave Pitts @ LG.

Why Levi? foremost this massive drive blocker fits Kubiaks scheme, will excell in a zone-trap blocking system. big upper frame, broad shoulders, long arms, big hands and good chest thickness, along with a big bubble, wide hips, thick thighs and ankles, has frame to carry more bulk with no loss in quickness, very light on his feet for a player of his size. I've watched Joe Thomas and he is more athletic, nimble & able to recover against the speed rushers. Thomas is more a classic protection LT that gets by on good footwork/technique.

when Spencer comes back healthy

"When"?? I think we're still in the "if" stage of that discussion. They may need more than one offensive tackle. I think this would be better addressed in free agency, though. The last thing I want is to have another rookie left tackle. That hasn't worked out so well in the past.

If they do draft Jones, they'll HAVE to trade down. They can't pick him at number 8. Every mock I've seen has him late first round from 20-30. Now if the Texans can trade the number 8 pick to New England for the Patriots two first round picks, that would work.

That would allow the Pats to get one of the top tier safeties or cb's in case samuels leaves in FA. That would leave us with picks 24 and depending on today's game a pick between 29-32. I think due to a weak top-tier tackle draft class this year Levi Brown will probably be gone by the 22nd pick. If we were able to get him then though that would take care of our tackle need and then use the 2nd 1st round pick to either trade back into the 2nd round and get some more picks or pick the BPA at either LB, S, CB or Dline.

Since when is Spencer's natural position RT? He has only ever played LT on the OL, stop making stuff up based on his size. I think there is a good chance he comes back healthy and shores up the LT position, but that still leaves us with questions over Winston/Weigert and the RT position along with center anx possibly RG. If we trade down for an O-lineman, i rather it would be Blalock from UT then Brown.

you did'nt notice his defeicency with the edge & speed rushers? even before his career threatening acl break to his tibia. :bowser:

second its not novel for College left tackles to switch to the right side once in the NFL, especially powerful, big drive blocking ones (for that matter Levi could play RT position as well).

the Texans have passed on two Pro Bowl tackles the last two drafts (Jammal Brown, Saints & Marcus McNeil, Chargers) even though Carr still is your run david run needs protection franchise QB.

thirdly I hope Spencer makes a full recovery. but the odds are against him having the same footwork, push off & speed to handle the edge. I'm not going to gamble & assume everything is alright & in a best case scenerio the Texans are covered & have their own Pro Bowl tackles @ both ends. of course I'm just making this stuff up :tease:

How far down do you think we could go & still get him? Green Bay, perhaps? Would they be interested in AP, or Lynch?

I have a sneaking suspicion that the Texans will target Michael Bush in the 2nd round.

However, while those 2 picks would go a long way towards solidifying the offense, it doesn't address the defensive needs. Unless, of course, we truely step up to the plate in free agency & nab Assante Samuels as our CB.

With the signing of Samuels & (hopefully) healthy returns of Kailee Wong (OLB), Wali Rainer (OLB), Chris McKenzie (CB), & Roc Alexander (DB), our defense should be vastly improved & would only need to have the Safety & DT positions upgraded through the draft.

What do you know about Keith Jackson out of Arkansas?

Personally I think Levi Brown as the ability to be the best tackle coming out of this draft. He has very solid size and technique, he just doesn't have that nasty side to him you want in a tackle. He is too passive.

I've seen many mocks projecting him to drop into the early 20's, I beleive he will go in the 13-17 range.

I believe Spencer played a year of OG before switching to OT, and that is only after he played DT for 2 years I believe.

personally i think levi brown is in the mold of levi jones up in cinci...a great talent at LT who could be a pro bowler with good coaching...do not see any reason why we shouldn't consider him with the 8th overall pick...and for everyone thinking that's too high for him...just wait...we haven't been through the senior bowl or the combine yet...and if he lifts good and works out good he'll be a top 10 rated pick due to the lack of talent at the tackle position this year

i'm never one to get mad about drafting a OT. I'm thinking he will go higher than 20-30 though. it'll all clear up after the combine.

Because Boselli and Victor Riley worked out so well?

Joe Thomas & LaRon Landry have pulled out of the Senior Bowl next week. too bad because I was looking forward to watching practice all week on the NFL network and the game next Saturday. But there are still alot of great prospects to look at including Levi Brown-

http://www.gbnreport.com/seniorbowlhtswts.html

Landry, with him falling down the boards deffinatly need to be there. He got some very bad advice from his agent. Maybe there're tring to stop the slide ? Makes on sense to me. Joe Thomas is a lock to be a top five pick. I've seen some mocks that have Detroit taking him at two. He had nothing to gain and everything to loose by particapating in the game.

And sorry there ag, Joe Thomas is the hotest o-line prospect to come down the road in a very long time. If the '08 board wasn't going to be loaded with upper echlon tallent, I'd be banging on the move up drum loud and often in here. Yes, he's going to be that good. HOFer good.

I was speaking specifically of on field performance issues. Boselli never made it onto the field, so I don't count him in the poor performance category. And Riley was a panic addition right before camp that was never seen as a long term player.

Look, I want the team to sign a solid free agent to play left tackle. If they could get an all world prospect (Joe Thomas) in the draft, then by all means, do it. But I don't want them to reach for a prospect and start him at left tackle as a rookie. Because Pitts (average guard, below average tackle), Wand (first year starter), and Spencer (injury) have worked out so well.
:winky:

wow just think if we traded down to pick up their 1st and 2nd for our 1st:

1.Levi Brown
2a. Michael Bush
2b. Ryan Kalil C USC

That would help a lot...but we'd still not address our d-backs or d-line that makes me veeerry wary

I'm not as big of fan of Joe Thomas. those ankle braces he wears give me the creeps, he already has limited mobility & is not that athletic. not as important for him to show up? (also makes me think he is hiding something) I guess as long gets checked out & cleared by teams medical staffs concerning his torn acl rehab.

researching Levi it was discovered he had orthoscopic surgery for torn meniscus in his left knee, missed two games then took a couple more games to get into game shape, hence not a great senior season, not to mention Penn State being down a little. now he is at full strength & ready to show the NFL teams/scouts what he can do, the Senior Bowl setting the stage for him to close ground on the absent Thomas as the top tackle in the 07 draft. thats why I see his stock soaring & recently started considering him as a viable prospect when the Texans pick, before I thought they could trade down & still get him now I'm not so sure :winky:

So...which year do you fix it texansfan. Haven't we waited long enough ? I mean after five years, we're sitting here basing the next season on IF our only true OLT on the roster leg mends correctly. Which year is good for you ? Joe Thomas is going to cost you two ones, if not more to move up and go get him. He isn't just the best OLT prospect in this class. He is the best OLT prospect to come out since Boselli. That's going to cost you big time to move up and go get him. The fact also, by moving into the eight slot means the trade partner would be passing on the three locks and the two QBs. Who in the top five would do this ? There are no "Big Time" free agent OLT's out there. Just the fact that they are "out there" should send up the red flares on the guys.

No, beerlover is correct in saying that the best option form what we know today is making a move down play with Levi Brown as the target. OT gets covered and you come away with a couple of picks. Give up all day and Lynch or pass on the o-line again. Those are the options in the Texan's draft in '07. We've done it one way for five years. Be nice to see them do it the other way for once. Might help.

Levi was just interviewed @ the Senior Bowl (dressed in uniform) very impressive, already has his post graduate degree, very intelligent, huge and not someone I'd like to do battle against. they showed a bunch of game film with different blocking & protection schemes and he looks dominant. they said he is almost 6060 330 lbs with very long arms, I hope they mesure/weigh in shortly. when asked why he choose to come to the Senior Bowl and play Brown said he "just wanted to play some football and show everyone what he could do". the announcers then went on to say with a good week Levi Brown could be a top 10 pick....oh yeah Levi also mentioned he's been picking up some pointers from Tampa Bay coach John Gruden for what its worth :twocents:

Leon Hall is up next gotta go...

keep in mind folks that with the lack of talent in this years draft at the offensive tackle position he will go higher than expected...and i'm not talking about him going a couple of picks higher than 17th...i'm talking he very well could be the texans pick at the 8th overall and who could blame smith and kubiak for doing so...perhaps our biggest need with spencer's future in the drain is LT...i know it's a reach but "if" levi brown turns out to be exactly what i think he will be (levi jones type of OT) then he'll be worth the pick

I know its only Monday practice but I was watching Levi Brown in one on one drills against pass rushing defensive ends & well you probably guessed it- was blown away not only by his size/mass & strength but just how quick his footwork was. on one play he absoultely pancaked a player who I think is a very good one in Michigan DE LaMarr Woodley I mean it was a done deal. watched several other tackles as well like Ryan Harris ND but they not only where beat they got beat often, not in the same class at all :bubble:

Levi Brown made me take notice. I saw none of this during the season. He dominated Woodley, though Woodley is considered a 3-4 OLB, so take that with a grain of salt. However, he still put Woodly on the ground at least twice.

Side note: Adam Carriker looked great.

McCauley passed the eye test easily, but he looked poor in the drills. His footwork is a joke.

NFL Draft Scout-

01/22/07 - Senior Bowl North Team Monday Practice Report: With Wisconsin's Joe Thomas electing not to play, Penn State's Levi Brown is the most highly decorated offensive lineman in Mobile and throughout today's practice he showed why. Brown was good in pass blocking drills, consistently able to beat speed rushers to the outside and punish those who tried to bull rush him. He was even better in run blocking drills, where he decimated most and beat nearly all.

He's got the look of a Texan for sure. Passes the eyeball test. Watch his hips on the passing plays. He can drop his butt and deliver a pop. Got the arms to stalemate a bull rush. Broad shoulders, narrow in the hips with chunky thighs. Is he Joe Thomas ? No. Will he be the best OLT this club has ever had that actually made the feild ? You bet. Spencer and Levi would lock the line down for ten years.... If Spencer makes it back. If he doesn't, Winston isn't bad at RT. They go out and get one of the nasty C/G's latter in the draft, this hole of ours would be fixed for many seasons. No matter who the QB is.
