2nd or 3rd rd. LT picks?

Insideop

All Pro
Well, unless Rick Smith has something up his sleeve, we may be stuck at having to count on Spencer to come back 100% ready to play from his injury. I say this because after looking over the lists of players and reading the player profiles I can honestly say(based on what I've read) that this is a very weak draft for OLT's. With the exception of Thomas, and the return to school of Long, Baker, and Gaither, their is no O-lineman worth the Texans taking in the 1st round IMO, even if they trade down. Brown is too slow from what I've heard and Blalock is projected to be a guard (not really a pos. we need). I also don't believe FA is any better with Davis being the top rated LT.

Having said all this, I just wanted to get an idea of who y'all think the Texans could pick up in the 2nd or 3rd round if they draft a LT in one of those rounds? And do you think that pick will be good enough to start if Spencer isn't ready, or do you think they will be a project?

Some of the names I've heard as possible picks in the 2nd round or later are:
Joe Staley 6' 5", 305 lbs. athletic but needs to add strength.
Arron Sears 6' 4", 320 lbs. maybe better at guard.
Ryan Harris 6' 5", 292 lbs. same as Staley
Tony Ugoh 6' 5", 305 lbs. don't know much about him.
Mike Otto 6" 5" 304 lbs. good run blocker, but needs to add strength.

There are others out there. This is just a short list. The problem I see is that there could be a "feeding frenzy" on these linemen in the late 1st and early 2nd round with a number of teams needing O-line help picking ahead of us. And as mediocre as these O-linemen sound, they are all we have to choose from until next year. So if we don't get one of these 2nd tier guys in the 2nd round they could be all gone by the 3rd, and we would be left with hoping to find "a diamond in the rough."

So, do we pick a LT in the 2nd or risk it and wait until the 3rd? Or, do we wait until next year to draft a LT and just go with what we have (Spencer, if healthy, and Salaam)? What are y'alls thoughts on this?

brandon frye is my sleeper pick in the 4th or 5th. in a regular draft year, he'd be a 5th, but with the OT class being so thin, he should be taken in the 4th.

The comment, "needs to add strength", is said of just about all OL prospects and is not really much of a concern once they get into a professional level weight training program, provided they have the other qualities for their position.

Joe Staley is not considered to be a "power" blocker or road grader type. He is a "seal off" style of blocker and is usually graded out higher by teams using a zone blocking scheme. He carries a high grade and will be off the board early in the second round. The Senior Bowl and combine will contribute a lot in determining where he is eventually drafted, but with good performances, he could rise into the bottom half of the first round.

My favorite tackle in the draft is Ryan Harris, strength all that doesn't really matter, he gets the job done. He gave Brady Quinn all that time to put up all those numbers.

Because this years draft is very light in the number of high profile OTs, expect a run on OTs and the Top 5 to be gone by the end of RD 2.

Arron Sears 6' 4", 320 lbs. maybe better at guard. Not a good fit for our system, too stiff and slow and would probably be better at OG.
Ryan Harris 6' 5", 292 lbs. same as Staley Pretty solid, could add some strength, would look at him in the 3rd.
Tony Ugoh 6' 5", 305 lbs. don't know much about him. Fairly talented but not overly quick or good in space. I personally think he'd be better at OG and would not look at him for our system.
Mike Otto 6" 5" 304 lbs. good run blocker, but needs to add strength. Don't know much about him

I think Spencer will end up being back at 100% next year from everything I've heard about it, so I don't see OT as a real big need for us other than looking for improved depth somewhere in the 2nd day. Ryan Harris or maybe Joe Staley would warrant some consideration in the 3rd round but I think there will be far better defensive players available there that could come in and start for us from day 1. Brandon Frye and probably a few others would be a decent consideration somewhere in the 4th round or lower. If anything I'd be looking at an interior OLineman earlier in the draft than OT since our interior didn't play especially well for much of this year and they are older so we need to start finding a longer-term answer, whereas Spencer and Winston are our long-term OTs.

I think our line will look like this, Spencer, Pitts, ????, Weary, Winston. This gives us a younger line that will work together for several years to come. I think Center is a very real need for this team. McKinny and Fla. are to old

I don't think Levi will be anything in the NFL except a bust. But then again, he could take the McNeil route and prove everyone wrong.

I got to see much of Levi Brown throughout his Penn State career (I recently graduated from PSU myself). I can honestly make this assessment about him..

His talent is unquestioned. In fact, I'll go one step further.. Talentwise, he has the potential to be the best Tackle to come out of this draft, and yes I include Joe Thomas in that list.

His big problem is mental. His drive isn't always there, and it's his lacksidascial approach which makes him where he's at now, which is a mid-low first rounder.

I agree with your first statement "has the potential to be the best Tackle to come out of this draft" but the reason I beleive he slipped some this season was due to an injury (torn meniscus in his left knee) missed some game time then came back too soon & had to take it easy- not lacksidascial at all just cautious, you can't fault him for that in fact I applaud him for that, when the Texans or any other NFL team get their hands on him do you think they'd want damaged goods?

I'll argue once teams take a close look at him his stock will actually rise & be taken somewhere in the top of the draft. the 8th pick come draft time will look less & less of a reach & more of a possiblity :stirpot:

i'll agree that unless levi brown really has a great senior bowl and up's his stock that the 2nd or 3rd round is where our LT will come from...but let me add another name to this list of prospects...doug free...from NIL...this kid has some talent and is getting over looked...he was part of a o-line that paved the way for wolfe...and if you watched the east/west shrine game today you would have saw that he pretty much kept brian robison in check...his pass pro seemed to be very good and he has the size we're looking for 6'7'' 307lbs

also as far as FA tackles go let me throw this idea out to ya'll...eric steinback...i know he's a guard but he's 6'6'' 290lbs...he was forced to play some LT this season and didn't do too bad of a job...why couldn't we sign him and make him our LT...after all everyone a back in the 2005 draft was saying that jamal brown couldn't play LT and he's playing that position in the pro bowl this year...why not eric?

It has to be 2nd round. According to Scott Wright all the tackles will be drafted by 1/3 of the 2nd round because many teams need them.

i've been researching, kyle young from fresno can play all positions on the line...

Kyle young was projected to be top OC this year but so far he didn't play very well this year. But he is very good OC who has allot of potential but I am not sure if he will fit into ZBS.

Kyle Young is not quite the ZBS type. He is a mountian. He was the top C prospect, but sucked it up during the year just as his entire team did. I prefer Kailh a lot more, and even I we wait a little longer, Dan Mosez the All-American would be a good option second day.

I don't see the Texans going for a LT because there is a dearth this year, and Spencer is expected to be back. I expect the Texans to look for a center, though. Maybe the OSU center.

The Texans had a very tough time running the ball inside. Drew Hodgdon showed last season that he is not the center of the future - he was benched for McKinney. Also, Flanagan looked ugly, too, when he started, and was injured the rest of the time.

As much as I would like the Texans to draft a left tackle, I think there are more pressing needs at the Center position.

I think a trade down to take a LT and possibly a C in the 3rd round (I dont even think Manghold the best this past year was taken until the 2nd) could happen.

i dont remember where i read it, but it was stated something around he didnt have his best perfomance this past year because he was moved around the line due to injuries, lack of depth and him being the best overall offensive linemen on the team

Ed McCarthy from yale is an OT. He was AP and Walter Camp 1st team All American this year. Played every position on the oline.

With that said, I have only read about him, never seen him play and don't know how fast he is...or how he'd be in the ZBS. Also don't know what rd he'd go in but hopefully our FO is/has looked at him.

Ryan Kalil is the C at USC that is arguably the best C coming out this Year. If he would be a good fit for our team I hope we pick him with our 3rd. However I think he will probably be gone before we pick. If we really want a young Oline ..I'd say we need to pick him up with our 2nd but I'd really like a good CB or FS or DT or shoot alot in the second.
