Well, unless Rick Smith has something up his sleeve, we may be stuck at having to count on Spencer to come back 100% ready to play from his injury. I say this because after looking over the lists of players and reading the player profiles I can honestly say(based on what I've read) that this is a very weak draft for OLT's. With the exception of Thomas, and the return to school of Long, Baker, and Gaither, their is no O-lineman worth the Texans taking in the 1st round IMO, even if they trade down. Brown is too slow from what I've heard and Blalock is projected to be a guard (not really a pos. we need). I also don't believe FA is any better with Davis being the top rated LT.
Having said all this, I just wanted to get an idea of who y'all think the Texans could pick up in the 2nd or 3rd round if they draft a LT in one of those rounds? And do you think that pick will be good enough to start if Spencer isn't ready, or do you think they will be a project?
Some of the names I've heard as possible picks in the 2nd round or later are:
Joe Staley 6' 5", 305 lbs. athletic but needs to add strength.
Arron Sears 6' 4", 320 lbs. maybe better at guard.
Ryan Harris 6' 5", 292 lbs. same as Staley
Tony Ugoh 6' 5", 305 lbs. don't know much about him.
Mike Otto 6" 5" 304 lbs. good run blocker, but needs to add strength.
There are others out there. This is just a short list. The problem I see is that there could be a "feeding frenzy" on these linemen in the late 1st and early 2nd round with a number of teams needing O-line help picking ahead of us. And as mediocre as these O-linemen sound, they are all we have to choose from until next year. So if we don't get one of these 2nd tier guys in the 2nd round they could be all gone by the 3rd, and we would be left with hoping to find "a diamond in the rough."
So, do we pick a LT in the 2nd or risk it and wait until the 3rd? Or, do we wait until next year to draft a LT and just go with what we have (Spencer, if healthy, and Salaam)? What are y'alls thoughts on this?
