Mark Gaughan, of the Buffalo News, reports the Buffalo Bills will unlikely be able to re-sign CB Nate Clements, who is expected to receive a lucrative offer as a free agent in the offseason.

Nick Eatman, of DallasCowboys.com, reports Dallas Cowboys PK Martin Gramatica is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The club is expected to attempt to re-sign him.


I know Gramatica is a bit of a stretch but hey who knows.

Isn't the ***** kicker still out there? Vanderjackass was released by Dallas, but I think he was still nursing an injury when they let him go. Anyone know what is going on with him now?

You can pretty much bet there's going to be a bidding war on Clements. At 10 to 13.5 million in cap space, you go after him won't be no "others" in FA. Be him and no one else. That'll shave off five million there. All Day that's another 5 to eight million...see where I'm going with this ? Three million to sign the rest with no emergency war chest. If we're at the high end in cap space.

Not sure what a deal to lock up Clements or Samuel would ultimately look like in terms of $, but there is no way that if Peterson is drafted in the 8 hole that he would get a deal that would count 5 to 8 MM against the '07 cap. All of these deals have to be structured to fit in the rookie pool. That is not to say that there aren't effects on forward years via guaranteed roster bonuses etc.

Also check out the HPF 2006 salary cap page (http://www.houstonprofootball.com/cap.html) and take a look at what Mario's estimated cap hit was for this season as the number 1 overall (Keith has it just under 3MM.)

Plus, it looks to me like there is an opportunity to restructure or release DDW and Payne to create more room in 2007 (but maybe less in 08)

Last year the Texans quietly let go of players. This offseason will be different. I suspect TJ, Peek, Hodgdon, and Dominic Williams will be gone before the next season starts. Just a feeling, but releasing these guys should open up some new money.

He is the best in his class at his position. He's gonna want to get paid . And his agent will give up Bushette like money because ?

His agent will give up Bushette like-money because he wont be drafted 1 or 2 and if he were to be drafted by us at 8 then he would really have no reason to say he deserves that kind of money.

So you are saying that the number 8 overall pick this year is going to get a deal that is 2 to 2.5 greater cap wise than than last years number 1 overall? :ok:

I am talking about actual cap implications for '07 not braga-dollars.

True, we are closer on cap room than I would like, but I look for the team to release some players and re-negotiate some contracts to get more room. I suspect that when all is said and done, they will add about 4-6 mill to the cap room. We need the one high end CB and if we can swing it maybe one more upper level player and then hope for the best in the draft.

If his agent can convince the Texans to pay Peterson #1 or #2 money when he was drafted at #8 then he would win the Agent of the Millennium award.

I expect that by March 5th we will have a much better idea of what we will be doing in the draft. Most of the highend deals seem to pop pretty quick after FA starts.

I agree - I suspect we might let go of one or two others too. Maybe Flanagan, depending on what we bring in at Center. We need someone for the future there and there's a few possibilities in the middle rounds of the draft this year.

1. Daniel Graham, TE New England - He hates the phrase "best blocking tight end in the league," but that he is. He wants people to take note of his pass-catching skills, and he would get that opportunity with Houston, where he would be the best blocker on the line and an over-the-middle and screen threat that they don't have. Gary Kubiak took advantage of Shannon Sharpe's skills and he would do the same with Graham.

2. Justin Smith, DE Cincinnati Bengals - Smith knows how to get after the quarterback (41.5 sacks in six seasons). His career sacks average would be the third most the Texans have had in a season, and he is durable (91 straight starts). After 8 ½ sacks as a rookie, Smith has led the Bengals' defensive line in tackles five straight seasons.

3. Asante Samuel, CB New England - An aggressive corner, who can deliver hits in run-force and always seems to be around the ball. His league-leading 10 interceptions don't make him Champ Bailey and he might be hard to match that total next season - he had just six in his first three seasons - but half that would lead the Texans. His price tag might be the most ridiculous, but with some creative financing the Texans could make room.

4. Kevin Kaesviharn, S Cincinnati - While we feel the Texans need a quarterback, we feel just as strongly that they need a quarterback in the secondary. Kaesviharn could be a good option there. He would probably be an instant favorite of coordinator Richard Smith and at 30, he wouldn't have to handle most of the reps. A scout told me he is more role player than impact player. Still, six interceptions this season to go with a ton of big hits, and he's a guy that could help C.C. Brown develop.

5. Cory Redding, DT Detroit - Clearly, I am a Redding fan, and have been since he was a local high school star at North Shore. He had a career year with eight sacks this season for the Lions. He would be a great fit to start next to Anthony Weaver, with Anthony Maddox (who the Texans must re-sign) as a backup. But can you trade Travis Johnson, who just finished the second year of his first-round rookie contract?

What? Why would we even be interested in Graham w/ numerous holes on the team and TE being one of the strengths?

Bruener is a great blocking TE who CAN catch the ball when needed; Owen Daniels is a good blocker and a great pass-catching TE and the best rookie TE this year.

How can you write about the Texans when you don't pay attention to the team and are obviously not even familiar w/ the roster or their true needs? How annoying.:drunk:

I would like Redding. I think he'd be a good fit and is a viable option to come here. Not sure about the others. Asante Samuel just had a Beltran-like postseason and probably priced himself out of many teams range.
