If practices are open to the public at Reliant they start tomorrow (Monday). They will be practicing Monday - Thursday, with a walk thru on Friday (see schedule). NFL scouts will be there. Going to practices will give you more info about players than seeing the game. It would nice if a couple of draft experts living in Houston could visit practices and give us report on the players.

If practices are open to the public I might drive in for a day. If you want to go to the game they still have good seats for $25.
 
I think Lester is going to steal the show. With his size and strength at QB and finally having talent around him, he is going to look really good.
 
Here is the reply I received from the Shrine Bowl regarding practices being open to the public:

The plan was for the practices to be open, assuming the weather would cooperate and we would be able to practice outside. However, with the weather as it looks now we will be practicing inside the Texans practice bubble and due to lack of room, the practics in there will be closed. If we can practice outside on Wed, or Thurs., the practices will be open.

Good to hear. If it sounds like practices will be outside later in the week I'll try to stop by somewhere in there and pass along some observations on some of the guys. Here are the main guys I'm interested in:

Willis Barringer, S, Michigan - possible 2nd day pick that could be a decent upgrade at S.
Brandon Frye, OT, Virginia Tech - sounds like a pretty good fit for the ZBS, could be an option in the 4th round.
Dan Bazuin, DE, Central Michigan - pretty solid pass rusher and decent against the run, will be good to see him against more solid competition this week, could be a 3rd round pick.
Baraka Atkins, DE, Miami - an athletic DE that is solid against the pass and run, would be a consideration in the 3rd round, definitely 4th round or lower.
Paul Williams, WR, Fresno - very fast WR, will be nice to see how his skills compare to others and how he plays against good competition, could end up beind drafted late in the 1st day.
Desmond Bishop, LB, California - pretty solid overall LB, would be a great 2nd day pick, could end up in the 3rd round.
John Wendling, S, Wyoming - sounds like a pretty good player, could make it into the low 2nd round, more likely the 3rd or high 4th.
Michael Johnson, S, Arizona - pretty athletic, decent in coverage, could be a decent FS option in the 2nd day but I'd prefer to take one higher.
Jon Cornish, RB, Kansas - I haven't seen any of him yet but I've heard good things from some people, would be interested to see how he plays this week.
Brian Robison, DE, Texas - looked pretty solid this year, would like to see more of him. Could be a decent option in the 4th, maybe 3rd round.
Ikaika Alama-Francis, DE, Hawaii - likewise I haven't seen him play much but I've heard good things, sounds like a good pass rusher.

This is the best we have to offer the NFL. Most likely a 5th rounder or so. Produced well consistently against the Big 12. I posted an entire thread on him.

--The Texans have spent much of the past week in their practice facility watching young draft prospects participate in the East-West Shrine Game. The college All-Star game is being held at an NFL facility for the first time, and it has proved to be extremely convenient for the Texans' staff.

New Texans general manager Rick Smith, along with almost every assistant Texans coach and the scouting staff, has watched the majority of the practices. Offensive line coach John Benton and assistant defensive backs coach Martin Bayless are part of the Shrine Game's coaching staff.

When the game ends, Smith said he plans to take advantage of what Benton and Bayless learned working with the young talent. He will also be making phone calls to Shrine Game head coaches Don Shula and Dan Reeves.

"We exhaust all resources," Smith said. "And certainly if you have a relationship with people, like we have with both of those coaches. Well be calling them."...

I'm about to leave for the game. I'll be sitting on the 40 yard line which will be a completely different perspective that I'm not used to.

I'll try to take some pics for you guys.
 
we also need to look at justin warren or melvin bullit in the later rounds not just because im an aggie but i think they have some potential

also check out Mario Henderson LT FSU (East) I really think he has potential could go higher than some people think maybe 4th rd.

I like both of those guys as well.
 
I'd mark off Tyronne Moss too. For a big guy he runs with zero power. He looks like a young Kevan Barlow.
 
That 6'2" David Ball wr is kinda interesting. He was very productive and he had a track scholarship...wonder how fast he really is?
 
I think Battle would look good at the FB/TE/H-back position here....I'd like to see us take a shot at him in the 5th-6th round if he is still there.

Very interesting, just made a great deep catch. So is Jacoby Jones, very athletic but another small school prospect. I wouldnt mind taking a Day 2 chance on either (even tho Ball might be gone depending on workouts).
 
first great job Shriners & Houston for pulling off a nice spring board & for some a last chance to shine on the field :fieldgoal

who improved their stock?

DE Daniel Bazuin- I think his stock is soaring into the 2nd rd. after his performance tonight. reminds me of Jason Babin has a high motor that never stops & more explosive. I counted three sacks, always around the QB.

DE Justin Hickman- the UCLA end can play, very disruptive with ability to shed would be blockers and get seperation to the QB. where Bazuin will be more coveted by the 3-4 teams Justin would fit the 4-3.

WR David Ball- is he this years Marques Colston? coming from a small school (New Hampshire) deceptive speed. good frame w/excellent hands. one thing for sure he also helped his stock & some team will take him long before the end of the 7th rd. seems like solid 4th rd. material with a good combine.

WR Paul Williams- NFL ability also has return experience. lean, fluid with ggod speed as well as the tech boyz Jarrett Hicks & Joel Filani all late rd. picks.

QB John Beck showed poise & good leadership the first drive taking the West all the way down the field for a score with a nice touch, but I was dissapointed that he under threw his receiver once on a third & long (did not plant his feet) & over threw another.

QB Jeff Rowe did elevate his stock. Big, physical Pro style QB with excellent arm strength & displayed as much going deep with accuracy. would like to see more from him, @ 6050 230 could be another Sage. keep tabs on him.

RB Jon Cornish had good cut back moves, weeded his way through holes in a very workman like way & could be a nice 6th/7th rd pick.

FB Jackie Battle was impressive. good short yardage back with power- NFL size. also liked what I saw in the open field, would have been nice to watch him catch & run a little more, not sure about his blocking ability from what I saw. certainly seems like worth at least a 6th rd. pick maybe higher, will have to closely follow him as well.

CB Kenny Scott- ok I guess, don't think he has the coverage skills for the NFL & after 2-3 years might be better used playing FS (got burned deep once). over-rated to me I was expecting more not suprised if he slips past 3rd into the 4th.

CB C.J. Wilson- liked his fluid hips giving him the abiltiy to change direction & good recovery speed. I think he helped himself & leap frogged Scott as the best corner in this game. also liked the db from Washington State Tyron Brackenridge, he showed good coverage skills & better speed than posted.

S Sabby Piscitelli- like this former Beaver alot. very physical, good coverage skills, hits like hell & locks up his man with text book effeiciency. if the Texans do not take Reggie Nelson or LaRon Landry in the 1st rd. this might just be an option to fill that need for the Texans at FS. I liked what I saw alot & would weigh my options with the Texans 3rd rd pick :)
 
How did DEs Bazuin and Mkristo Bruce do in the game today? These were two guys I would have liked to have gotten a look at. Could project as at least situational pass rushers.

Thanks. Anything on Bruce? He was up for several of the DL awards at the end of the season.

Bauzin helped his stock. Bruce did not notice him too much. another name I forgot to mention (late rd. pick) was Miami's Baraka Atkins, very raw but the type of player who develops into a solid NFL lineman.

We still have Merriweather out there to take if those two guys are not around. His play was top rate, only his incident on the field during a fight his team did not start is pushing him back.
 
Was at the game.

Florida State's LT was impressive, so was Washington State's RT.

No runningback cought my eye at all, Moss was terrible.

The punter from the east squad was VERY impressive, booming punts and in pre-game warmups bouncing them right on the 5 yard line.

Breaston was a good complete wide reciever (Michigan), he'll be a good #2, #3 for a team.

F- to Reliant stadium grounds crew. The field was wet and sloppy. Turf was coming up everywhere, nobody could cut-back. You could tell it was frustrating wide recievers and especially runningbacks.

I believe his scholarship was as a high jumper. Somewhere on the net I believe he has says will run in the 4.5 range.

A couple of guys caught my eye in the game, including David Ball who made an outstanding catch down the sideline in the 3rd quater and then had the smarts to get up and run with it for an extra 20 yards, Daniel Bauzin is a player at defensive end, John Beck and Jeff Rowe looked like small school QBs that can succeed on the next level, especially Rowe, and Jackie Battle is a very interesting player who can do a lot of things for an offense.

I think David Ball will make a roster, but I think he's getting a bit too much pub (that's certainly a relative term). Everybody is looking for the next Marques Colston... but I'm not sure Ball is that guy. Colston ran a 4.5 at 6'4", 225. He also did excellent in agility drills. He was almost Mr. Irrelevant despite all those major pluses. I guess people had him projected as a TE, but in retrospect it makes no sense at all.

Ball says he can run a 4.5 when the clock is on, but he's much smaller than Colston and equally unproven against top comp. He'll probably go in the 5th or 6th... my small school sleeper at WR is Jacoby Jones. I'll take the bigger, better athlete hoping to reproduce some Colston magic.
 
I am a Shriner patient. Most of you recognize me by my big football hat. The first day the players arrived they spent four hours at the Shriners Hospital with the patients. They played football, basketball, xbox and quite a few of the players were dancing with the kids. I met all the guys and coaches. They were all great . I did get invited to the practice and that was really exciting. Mean Joe Green was there and Chuck Muncie. Chuck took quite a bit of time with me and gave me his card and phone number and told me to keep in touch. I had a talk with Marv Levy, former Bills coach and he was also great. Meeting Don Shula and Dan Reeves was an experience for me. They were so nice. Coach Kubiak and Rick Smith were there and I spoke to Rick Taylor about the Texans going to the SB next year. I became pals with J. Battle from the UofH.
The game was great but the tailgating with the Shriners and the Raging Bulls had us laughing all night. Joe Texan ,Preston, Doc and Coach Blake with a few Copperheads were my guests.We are sure the game will be here next year and more people will be out with us. We had a good crowd even though the weather was so wet. I will start posting as soon as I find out if we get the game again. The Shriners said they had such a great time in Houston. :marionaner:

As most of you know I usually post POD's close to the draft but after INDY....................so today I'll change it up...................your getting two guys today that most wont know that I think will project as player who will go the second day who have starter potential.............



1. Rory Johnson LB Ole Miss..........................plays in the shadows of the best LB in this draft.........but much like Tulloch he is a hidden Gem..........he was a top recruit in HS but grades killed him..........he went the JUCO route at Hinds CC and was unreal.............he was highly sought after as he committed to MSU in 2004 and then he failed academically.........he returned to Ole Miss and reports are he ran a 4.35 at 242 lbs after practice in Nov..........he was retimed and the time was correct.............he now has done the shocking move of declaring with two yrs left............he is a raw talent but make no mistake..........this guy is Keith Bulluck with an invisible shield.........he actually played SS and FS for Miss and played well...........I project him to round four...........but i know scouts are flocking to Miss (and to see Willis as well) to get tape since he announced..........he will be a ST demon in the NFL when he earns his stripes I expect him to make a big impact. My son says he is the best player he went against this yr in the SEC.

Please meet the new Jerry Rice and he is from a school as small as Jerry's college. Ball grew up in rural NH and was a stud athlete........... Ball also played basketball in high school and competed in track and field - high jump, long jump, triple jump - to get his competitive fix. Even after spending a postgraduate year at Worcester Academy in Massachusetts he just flat out came of age athletically. He became, a high school basketball and high jump champion, and went on to set all of his HS records and shatter many New Hampshire state records. Against his home town college he tied Rice's record in Sept. Ball grabbed a jump ball in the end zone against Darmouth for his the 50th TD catch of his career, tying Rice’s all-time Division I-AA mark. He smashed Rice's records this yr and is known in scouts circles as "Dirty Rice" because he is so physically imposing and tough to stop.....he finished his career with 58 TD's and fell 70 yds short of Rice's yardage mark and he should be drafted in the 3-5th range..........a sub 4.5 gets him to day one in my view.........fantastic hands and a player to watch.................

I will reaffirm the fact that Rory Johnson is very good. Nobody knows about him because of patrick but was around the ball every play. I found myself yelling at pat during each game for good tackle but half the time it was 49 rory johnson..i was like aahh damn he's good. i saw one mock...condraft? that had him going in the 3rd. I wouldnt mind us picking him up in the 4th. could be great olb next to demeco (keeping him at mike)
 
How did Justin Warren end up doing? I didn't get to see the game. I was looking at A&M's recruiting book at my high school and every quote from him in it was about the team, not him. He's a really good guy, I hope the Texans give him a serious look at a Strong Side linebacker.
 
I have one thing to add about WR David Ball...

As reported during the Shrine game, his WR coach at New Hampshire was none other than Billy "White Shoes" Johnson.

That is a misunderstanding, White Shoes has been with Atlanta Falcons for a while. Currently he is their conditioning coach. WS coached Ball at the Shrine game.
