Jeff Garcia a Texan next season?

Rick Smith said we'd be bringing in someone to compete with the one who's name must never be typed on this forum for the starting qb job in camp. Garcia is a free agent and I think he could completely change our offense under Kubiak. His pocket awareness and ability to read defenses is very good...

I know I just opened Pandora's box by making this thread but I just had to see what yall think of Garcia being a Texan next season and whether or not we have a shot at getting him.

No, we don't have a shot at him. The Eagles love him and he likes being an Eagle. Being where he is, being well-liked and wanted by a Super Bowl contender is certainly more attractive than coming to the Texans....No shot.

Hard to tell.. Garcia's gonna be 37 next year, and the clock is ticking. I don't know if he's going to want to spend a second season backing up McNabb, although he's seemingly done very well for himself fitting in to the Philadelphia lifestyle.

The big question here is a matter of how muich Garcia thinks he's worth at this point in his career. I honestly think this season did a lot in rebuilding his confidence as a potent starting QB, after two consecutive discouraging seasons in Detroit and Cleveland.

Does he come to Cleveland to mentor a young kid, or to compete with the guy with the 4 letter last name? That's very possible. Then again, he seems to love the Eagles, and may be at a point in his career where he's comfortable being the reliable vet backup.

Don't forget about McNabb.

I don't think anyone can be that definitive at this point about what he will or will not do. Yes, he may like it in Philly, but perhaps he also wants to be a starter again--and that simply won't happen while McNabb is on the team. After the way Garcia has played this year, he will be due for a big pay increase next season. The Eagles may not want or be able to spend the money necessary to retain him with McNabb on the roster. The Eagles are a good team but still need some help. I have no idea what their cap situation will be, but having 2 Pro Bowl QB's on the roster may occupy too much of their cap space.

If the Texans really want him, I think we would have a shot at him.

Garcia has said he wants to stay in Philly and Philly has seen how important he is to have there, so I doubt he leaves. If he does, I still doubt we look at him unless we pick a QB in round one so that he would only have to keep the seat warm for a year AND if he doesn't cost an arm and a leg which I suspect he will and the contract can be kept short which I doubt he will want.

Garcia is only effective in the west coast offense. He was a failure in Cleveland. With the Lions, well its the Lions plus he was hurt...

not gonna happen. Garcia solidified his role as a QB backup with the Eagles atleast till he's 40. That was a great run the Eagles had with him at the helm, you gotta admit.

He would be as successful here as he was in Detroit and Cleveland. Now if the Texans had an Oline like Philly he would be successful here. So would David Carr.

Seems like a few people here forgot about McNabb. I know the idea is that Garcia is happy with the Eagles regardless and doesn't mind playing back-up at this point in his career. But thats before he surprised not only everyone else, but I'm sure himself as well; in the fact he can still be a starting QB in this league. He looked great out there today against the Saints too. Absolutely picked apart the Saints while avoiding constant pressure. The Eagles O-Line was pathetic all game. Westbrook just looked horribly sluggish and quite honestly was completely ineffective (except for the one 50+ TD run he had that was credit mostly great blocking by his TE and a horrible read by the Saints LBs and Ss. Even then did you notice Bellamy suck him up? Bellamy is 34 years old and played half the season....thats inexcusable.) Otherwise the Eagles would be playing next week.

Long story short, don't be surprised to see Garcia go somewhere if he knows he will start there the next season. He has a lot left in his tank and still is a fierce competitor (did you see the way he got after Westbrook the whole game). I'd love to have him if Kubiak thought he would work well in the system (which I personally believe he would....he is basically a more calm, savy David Carr).

Considering the fact McNabb is injury prone, I don't see Philly letting go of Garcia if they can help it.

As far as him being a Texan, McNair and company seem more interested in building a solid mostly young team rather than putting something together to be a 1 year wonder, so at 37 years old, I don't see them going after Garcia.

Admitidly, I am luke warm on Carr, but I think there are much bigger holes to fill at this point, I am still hopefull Kubiak can get DC's head screwed on right by next year, and if worse comes to worse, I hope we keep Sage to fall back on early in the season if Carr isn't getting the job done.

In my humble opinion, Sage Rosenfels will be just as successful as any FA QB that we could bring into the mix. He showed in Miami that he is a capable QB. If we continue to put talent around him, he should be able to handle the job...

Ah I think once Sage gets healthy and can give Carr some competition Carr will pick his game up just like he did after the titans game. I also think that we need to pick up a young QB in the draft, and start having Kubiak work with him. If Carr or Sage can't cut it, through the new guy in there and let him get his feet wet.

I say we give Carr another 5 years to get things together. All he needs is good coaching, an o-line, running backs, and receivers.

HE CAN DO IT!

Mr. McNair is going to have to open his pocket book to bring a experienced QB to Houston. Only way they would come, playing for a losing exspansion team that can't protect it's QB.

SAy what you will ab out Garcia, but he sure as sh%t ain't calm! He wasn't calm last night AT ALL. He had happy feet like nobody's business. He was "geeked up" all night, especially in the first half where he was getting wound up to throw lasers. His throws were all late and behind his receivers and by all rights should have had three or four interceptions. He was very fortunate to get away with all of them.

On the big touchdown his feet were tapping at a hundred miles and hour and he bailed out of the pocket with no pressure on him at all. So to say that he was this calm, cool character is not an accurate description of how he carried himself last night.

With Donovan's uncertainty with his injury status, the Eagles will probably do everything that they can to resign Garcia.

I think your confusing looking graceful with calm. I never said he looked smooth out there....but he was calm because he made the right decisions all night, while being pressured 99% of the night. He didn't force more than a couple of throws into coverage and he didn't give up on plays just because of a constant rush. As far as almost throwing 3 or 4 interceptions....thats ludicrous, he might have thrown behind a couple of WR's crossing the field once or twice, but with the pressure he faced on those throws, the WR's were just lucky to have them that close. I didn't see a ball hit off a Saints DB's hands all night. Excluding the ball bouncing off Simoneau's head. But he has a similar skill set to Carr like I said, he just has the ability, calmness, experience, whatever you want to call it, to translate it into the game.

In this week's Sports Illustrated, they actually talked to Garcia and he was saying that the reason he chose Philly was because they had a franchise QB and he just really wanted to be a backup, especially after Detroit, I see him playing their for the rest of his career

Carr has talent, but he is lacking in some key areas. Maybe one more year...but then....off to backup role.

I think we should give Sage a shot...bring in some new talent.

Sirious Radio is speculating as of today that the QB they are targeting is Drew Bledsoe.

Not a made up story!!

Was on the NFL report and anyone who has Sirius who heard it can verify it.

The first long ball he threw on the night was into double coverage and almost picked. He nailed Simoneau in the head. He tossed a hand grenade to Westbrook that almost got him decapitated and was almost picked. The netire night was an exercise in close calls. Watch the NFL replay I believe on Thursday. Garcia played pretty poorly on the night. DC wasn't playing so don't compare the two. Talk about the performance and what it was. He forced a lot of balls, got fortunate on some completions and had some drops. He wasn't Montana.

He was 15-for-30. He wasn't at his best at all. This board has a history of disregarding offensive lines as being the cause of anything that the QB does, so why don't we just throw that out of the window completely here. Folks can't pick and choose when they explain poor offensive line play for poor quarterback play.

I also imagine that he will stay an Eagle given McNabb's health issues.

So far, none of the QBs in the playoffs have played very well and the offenses have been anemic at best. Defense so far has been the name of the game.

I will do my best to watch the replay. But don't try and tell me how to go about justifying my posts. What i said isn't absurd. But you want to know what is absurd? Telling someone not to compare one QB to another because they weren't playing in the same game, behind the same line, in the same exact situation. Hey everyone on the message board....no more comparisons ever because apparently if they aren't in the same game together doing things while holding hands its not comparable. Comparisons, by this rationale, obviously would be impossible as a whole, and never justifiable.

Whats actually even more absurd is one sentence later you tell me he isn't Montana....which is a comparison. Well i don't know....I'm still not sure if we were watching the same game but i didn't see ****ing Montana out there either.

I guess i'll try and watch for him Thursday when I'm watching Garcia almost beat the Saints, despite Westbrook, his O-line and his entire defense.

i just dont know man..

Garcia in the Eagles
1) Better Running Back (Reggie Bush that than run up the middle)
2) Better O-Line
3) Better Defense

So you bring him here another year older and downgrade pretty much the team he is surrounded I dont know man

I agree he isn't our answer to winning games by any means, but I do believe he is an upgrade over Carr. And I've never been a Carr hater, they guy just can't put together his tools. Maybe somewhere else....but it just looks like he won't ever turn it around here.

Maybe this isn't a team he would want to go to due to experience, but, for those that say he likes and would rather stay in Philly, money always talks.

Well, let's hope that competition Smits was talking about was with a newcomer vs Sage.
Carr needs a new zip code for everyone's sake.

I seriously doubt that Garcia's leaving Philly - they need a reliable backup with all McNabb's yearly frailties, he loves it there and they love him too (now).

I'd much rather see us bring in someone younger to compete for the starting job. I don't know who, but we have an experienced, pretty solid backup in Sage. If we're bringing in more depth at QB then it should be someone with at least a few good years left in them.

I see similarities between Garcia and Clements last year. Both are pretty much on the team, but don't really take effect until later in the season. In the case of the Eagles, Garcia comes in when McNabb goes down, then carries them into the play-offs. Sounds like a nice job, IMO.

I have to believe that Garcia will stay and Philly. He should also get a nice boost to his bank account. If we bring in someone, I am going to go off what Rick Smith said. He wants someone who could not only come in to compete, but possibly beat out Carr. Do I think those guys are out there who knows, but it will be interesting to see.

I got to disagree on one point, Garca having taken Eagles to playoffs (he doesn't win those 5-6 games they don't make it) he will be wanting a lot of money maybe more than Eagles want to spend on a backup

Here's my take on Garcia...

He's a good QB when he has a good supporting cast. RIght now, he might have the best supporting cast in the league.

I wouldn't want to go anywhere if I were him.

We tried to do the above in the Tennessee game, but somehow the Carr homers managed to say it wasn't the same.

as for Garcia, Carr coulnd't hold his jock.

After watching Jeff Garcia play this season and knowing he has only a one year deal with the Eagles, and Donovan returning I hope some one in the front office is thinking about that option too.

Except Garcia doesn't want to play on a losing team. He's said that he'd rather be a backup on a winning team than a starter on a losing team. Can't say that I blame him, really.

I heard Garcia in an interview earlier today on ESPN and he said it would take a really special situation to lure him away from Philly next year. I could be wrong but I don't think coming to Houston to battle for a starting spot qualifies in his mind.

Maybe if he had a chance at be a starting QB, he'd consider the Texans...Mcnabb will be back this season so it will depend if Garcia is happy being only a backup...Yet, being Mcnabb ends up with season ending injuries, his chances would be better to stay with the Eagles....

Sure looks that way to me also.

remember during one of philly's televised games one of the commentators mentioning the fact that two teams showed interest in garcia in the offseason--philly and houston. maybe that could help Texans this offseason in any negotiations.
